Augmented and Virtual Reality: Where Is the Educational Value?

Augmented and Virtual Reality: Where Is the Educational Value? | Keep learning | Scoop.it
Looking back through the archives of THE Journal, you can find articles about the potential of VR dating all the way back to 1999. So why have previous VR technologies failed to catch on in public schools? And are the consumer technologies being introduced today, such as the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, more likely to find a home in classrooms?

Good to see more articles about the role of VR and AR in the classroom.

Ben's curator insight, June 22, 7:00 PM

Virtual Reality in the classroom provides a higher level of interactivity in subjects where both the instructor and students can explore together. With the rise in gaming VR devices, they are now becoming cheaper and more powerful in their capabilities. They can be used to explore geography, teach math, and even discover historic sites. This is coupled with their ability to create motivation through educational VR games.

Our STEM Lab/Makerspace is a HUGE hit with our students. Since I oversee the lab and take the classes in I get bombarded by kids all day asking if it is their day to go to the STEM Lab. They are building, discovering, exploring, designing, problem solving, and having a blast doing it. However, as the kids continued to explore the STEM Lab we began to notice that they had moved past the exploration phase and wanted a bit more direction and challenge. We realized that we needed to up our game a bit to take our lab to the next level so we decided to gamify our STEM Lab with challenges and badges! It took some prep but once the challenge cards and badges were created we were ready to roll. We are happy to share our tips, tricks and resources so that you can gamify your STEM or STEAM Lab too.
