Would They Play? Would They Learn? Finding the Sweet Spot between Games and Learning

Would They Play? Would They Learn? Finding the Sweet Spot between Games and Learning | Keep learning | Scoop.it

"What began as a routine summer workshop on incorporating games and game-like elements into instruction turned into the surprise of the summer; two weeks of fun and intense online game play by an engaged and committed cadre of faculty and staff who were working to apply the principles of gaming to their courses and student activities. I had planned to end the workshop with a two-week follow-up online game for participants, but I didn’t seriously think anyone would do it."

A Simple Technique You Can (and Should) Apply To Your eLearning Courses | Keep learning | Scoop.it

"It’s easy for an eLearner to “zone out” when faced with complex course content, especially with limited existing knowledge of a topic. The instructional design challenge is how to explain complex content easily. Start by considering some premises fundamental to eLearning design."

As we increasingly move towards designing our own eLearning content - it is essential to consider the delivery of that content - the tools are a means to an end - if the design quality is poor then the usefulness of those tools is greatly diminished.

For starters, long and focused study sessions may seem productive, but chances are you are spending most of your brainpower on trying to maintain your concentration for a long period of time. That doesn’t leave a lot of brain energy for learning.

“It’s hard to sit there and push yourself for hours,” Mr. Carey says. “You’re spending a lot of effort just staying there, when there are other ways to make the learning more efficient, fun and interesting.”

The first step toward better learning is to simply change your study environment from time to time. Rather than sitting at your desk or the kitchen table studying for hours, finding some new scenery will create new associations in your brain and make it easier to recall information later.

“The brain wants variation,” Mr. Carey says. “It wants to move, it wants to take periodic breaks.”

This is one of the important highlights in the article. Worth reading and doing some changes on yourself and when teaching others :)

Funding the Shift to Digital Learning

Funding the Shift to Digital Learning | Keep learning | Scoop.it

"This paper shares practical examples for leaders to consider as they work to expand access to digital learning tools. With the shift to online assessments and increased national attention to the importance of personalizing our education system, ensuring equitable student access to high-quality digital learning tools and opportunities is one the most important issues of our time. Without full access, students will be cut off from the possibilities for the personalization and customization of learning, and the opportunities to develop deeper learning skills necessary for college and career readiness."

26 iPad Apps For A Paperless Classroom - Te@chThought

26 iPad Apps For A Paperless Classroom - Te@chThought | Keep learning | Scoop.it

"The paperless classroom is a compelling concept for what it symbolizes as much as anything else.

While it sounds sleek and futuristic and easy to organize and environmentally friendly, the reality is that paperless classrooms aren’t that simple. The “environmentally-friendly” part, for example, is wildly subjective: the costs of manufacturing–and eventually recycling and disposing of–tablets versus the loss of “renewable” trees and the subsequent waste that is environmentally-friendly."

A few iPad apps for the less engaging subjects elementary teachers may teach-- math and english. In my experience, math games were the only way I could make math interesting for my learners. Giving them a "Fun Friday" was an effective way to reward students for completing their work on time. Of course, they loved the games even though they were educationally oriented. To them, any game is better than no game at all. Thinking back to when I was a kid, I can relate to that line of thinking.
