20+ Tips and Resources to Engage Learners with Comics : Teacher Reboot Camp

20+ Tips and Resources to Engage Learners with Comics : Teacher Reboot Camp | KB...Konnected's Kaleidoscope of Wonderful Websites! | Scoop.it

by Shelly Terrell

"Comics can be powerful learning tools. The mix of art, dialogue, character expressions, and frames engages learners and is brain-friendly. Moreover, comics break down a story’s plot and text into bite-sized chunks that are supported with visuals. This is much easier for our brain to process than reading a large amount of text on a page. Additionally, comics are an effective way to introduce your learners to digital storytelling. Many of the comic creation tools are easy to use allowing the learners to fill in their frames by clicking on a choice of characters, props, scenes, and more presented to them. Your learners will be able to quickly create a story, view it, and share it with their friends and family. Comics come in many formats and types to support and engage struggling readers as well as advanced readers. Creating comics engages students and encourages them to explore vocabulary, summarize information, and contextualize what they learn in a creative way. Creating comics is also being accepted as an effective way to teach complicated writing. Nick Sousanis, a doctoral candidate at Teachers College, Columbia University, wrote his PhD dissertation entirely in comic book form. View examples of his work on his blog, Spin, Weave and Cut. The following tips and free resources will help you engage learners with comics."

teacher professional development should get the same support that coding did. How can one teach what they don't know , content, and use tools proficiently without some support ?

Terry Doherty's curator insight, January 2, 1:21 PM

Comics or graphic novels ... whatever you call them, stories told in "panels" are a great way to not only encourage reading, but keep kids reading.

Just as we choose magazines over novels sometimes, kids want different things at different times!

Three Social Trends That Will Influence Education in 2014

Three Social Trends That Will Influence Education in 2014 | KB...Konnected's Kaleidoscope of Wonderful Websites! | Scoop.it

There are patterns within the trend predictions for 2014 that are worthy of paying attention to. There is strong, if not overwhelming evidence that behaviour patterns of students, educators, employees and professionals are moving towards the use of social tools for learning, working and teaching. Collaborating seamlessly face-to-face and at a distance, bringing the human element to virtual interactions, and personalized learning will prevail in 2014; each facilitated by technology. But it’s not going to be about the technology, it will be about making connections by voice and/or visual, contributing to new knowledge, and learning with and from others—all mediated through social media. It will be the behaviours of students, lifelong learners and educators—their use of technology, specifically social media applications that will influence education in the upcoming year.

Conclusion
Though we can predict and make an educated guess what the year 2014 will hold for education, we won’t really know until we are in it—knee deep. The year 2012 named by the New York Times as the Year-of-the-MOOC, shook the foundations of education, and no one saw it coming. Will social media influence education by increasing collaboration, humanize the learning experience, and support personalized learning in 2014? Time will tell.
