Kathy Young's insight:

Art and science my two favorite subjects combined. I love the way you can teach any type of science with art. Weather its making paper  planets. Marbling moons ,or even making a model of the stomach. whatever tickles your fancy. Its so easy to combine science and art. the two subjects really have a symbiotic partnership when it comes to teaching and learning at key stage 2.

I loved this Video. I found that the use of this puppet as a story telling tool really engaged these children. The use of song underpins the children's self worth and helps them build confidence in there own abilities. Children need to be confident and feel able to share there ideas visually and in conversation. I think this video really applies to the brief.

Learning and Teaching with iPads: iPads in learning journal articles

Learning and Teaching with iPads: iPads in learning journal articles | Katherine Young | Scoop.it

"Recently SCAN journal published an article I wrote around our schools' experience in using iPads in learning and thought it would be timely to look at what was available for schools from educational journals to supplement material they find elsewhere on the web and to assist further in their decision making on whether to go with iPads as a learning tool and/or to get teaching and learning ideas."

Helen is pleased with the progress of her son Clark
Kathy Young's insight:

I thought that this program on channel four showed a number of key behavior management techniques. This program really focused on the importance of involving the parents. The teacher and the parent have a mutual interest with the child's educational outcomes.Parents can work with teachers to help to combat poor classroom behavior. I thought this program was very interesting and had a creative approach is dealing with behavior. Inside and outside of the classroom.  The focus of this video was to get the child to understand that his behavior was unacceptable and he needed to apologies to his teacher. I think this video is more suitable to the teachers professional practice and personal development. But still importantly touches on accepts of the pupils personal development.

Kathy Young's insight:

The Young Person's Guide To Chamber Music.
Wigmore Hall schools music & animation project involving 4 primary schools groups. Each were asked the question 'what is chamber music?'. The children drew inspiration from musicians they met & listened to, wrote stories, made characters, backgrounds & props and created the music & animation.
The pupils from Barrow Hill Primary were inspired by singer Jodie Devos & pianist Katharina Thöni's interpretations of Mozart's Als Luise die Briefe & Fauré's Notre Amour. The children used hand-drawn animation to explore animated characters in fantasy settings: a couple waltz in New York's Central Park, a unicorn gallops across a fantasy landscape, a deep-sea diver becomes at one with the sea creatures under water & a dog flies over Planet Music.
Workshops led by composer Rus Nygård-Pearson and artist Reza Ben Gajra.
Wigmore Hall Learning in partnership with Lambeth City Learning Centre.

My thoughts are that this type of creative animation teaches children not only about the music used. Also it teaches children how cartoons and film is made. As well as refining drawing skills and motor skills. it can also be used as a tool of communication with children that do not have English as a first language .Visual communication can be understood by all children regardless of there backgrounds. I found this to be a very interesting teaching and learning aid.

Kathy Young's insight:

I for one love to marble. Always have done.

You will need:
* Lots of old newspaper to protect your table
* A large tray with deep sides (we used a foil roasting tin)
* A large jug of cold water
* Some marbling paint or marbling ink in different colours (you can buy this in craft shops)
* Pieces of paper or card(small enough to fit in the tray)
* A pencil

*You could use marbling to as a aid for teaching science, as the ink is clearly having  a reaction to the water.

*You could also use marbling to teach children about pattern and color.

*You could also use marbling as a tool for design.
