7 Characteristics of Highly Creative People | Inc.

7 Characteristics of Highly Creative People | Inc. | Karate | Scoop.it

by Jessica Stillman

"A new Norwegian study has some suggestions. Forget the Myers Briggs, says the research from Professor Øyvind L. Martinsen of BI Norwegian Business School, what you really need to look for is a handful of traits that tend to be associated with highly creative individuals.

To identify these characteristics, Martinson gathered a group of artists, musicians and marketing creatives and compared them to a control group of managers and other in professions less associated with creativity. What personality traits stood out among the artistically inclined? Martinson found seven:

"Associative orientation: Imaginative, playful, have a wealth of ideas, ability to be committed, sliding transitions between fact and fiction.

Need for originality: Resists rules and conventions. Have a rebellious attitude due to a need to do things no one else does.

Motivation: Have a need to perform, goal-oriented, innovative attitude, stamina to tackle difficult issues.

Ambition: Have a need to be influential, attract attention and recognition.

Flexibility: Have the ability to see different aspects of issues and come up with optional solutions

Low emotional stability: Have a tendency to experience negative emotions, greater fluctuations in moods and emotional state, failing self-confidence.

Low sociability: Have a tendency not to be very considerate, are obstinate and find faults and flaws in ideas and people."

By Kate Stefans. "Everyone has self –doubt. It’s a matter of cultivating the confidence to grow beyond those voices of insecurity that sets us free. Unbound from the rational, and free to expand creatively."

[On the fury of the hurricane in the Northeast:]

Why Empathy Is Important.

Why Empathy Is Important. | Karate | Scoop.it

Empathy is an important element within all relationships. It is to emotionally put your self in the place of another. When we demonstrate it we identify with another's feelings. The ability to empathize is directly dependent on your ability to feel your own feelings and identify them.

While a lack of empathy means not understanding the feelings and emotions of a person with whom we are in a relationship. Such behaviour is responsible for relationship break ups.

To master empathy you need to have self -awareness, non judgement, listening skills and self-confidence.

Karate black belts' white matter shows how a powerful punch comes from the brain

Karate black belts' white matter shows how a powerful punch comes from the brain | Karate | Scoop.it

Brain scans have revealed distinctive features in the brain structure of karate experts, which could be linked to their ability to punch powerfully from close range. Researchers from Imperial College London and UCL (University College London) found that differences in the structure of white matter -- the connections between brain regions -- were correlated with how black belts and novices performed in a test of punching ability.

Karate experts are able to generate extremely powerful forces with their punches, but how they do this is not fully understood. Previous studies have found that the force generated in a karate punch is not determined by muscular strength, suggesting that factors related to the control of muscle movement by the brain might be important.

The study, published in the journal Cerebral Cortex, looked for differences in brain structure between 12 karate practitioners with a black belt rank and an average of 13.8 years' karate experience, and 12 control subjects of similar age who exercised regularly but did not have any martial arts experience.

The researchers tested how powerfully the subjects could punch, but to make useful comparisons with the punching of novices they restricted the task to punching from short range -- a distance of 5 centimetres. The subjects wore infrared markers on their arms and torso to capture the speed of their movements.

5 Ways to Kick Your Fear of Failure

5 Ways to Kick Your Fear of Failure | Karate | Scoop.it
Losses come in a variety of forms, but the worst thing we can lose is faith in ourselves: in our ideas, in our skills and talents, and in our willingness and ability to overcome challenges and achieve our dreams.

When you constantly try to achieve big things, some amount of failure is inevitable. So is the resulting loss of confidence and self assurance. The key is how you respond and how quickly you regain belief in yourself.

Another fantastic post from LaRae Quy.  The image is powerful and symbolic.  One of the reasons I like this post so much is because no matter how much we go for and achieve, there always seems to be limiting thoughts and creep in and stop us from pursuing our goals.

Here is a great tip that can help all of us:

        ==================================

Here is an exercise that might help you identify your self-limiting barriers and develop the mental toughness to break through them:

Write down a list of barriers or behaviors that are holding you back. Below are some questions to help you start. Start each sentence with “I” so that it is a personal statement about your behavior.

1.What are the barriers getting in the way of your success and happiness?

2.What are the behaviors that you want to change?

3.When do you make excuses or not follow through?

The Karate Studio: An Excellent Example of a Competency-Based Classroom

The Karate Studio: An Excellent Example of a Competency-Based Classroom | Karate | Scoop.it

In Summary

Author and educator, William Arthur Ward, once said,

===> “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains.  The superior teacher demonstrates.  The great teacher inspires.” <====

More than ever we need our teachers to inspire our students each and every day. They need to lead by example. At the dojo, each class starts with the karate instructor taking a moment to recite their instructor pledge in front of the class. “I will teach this class as if it is the most important class I will ever teach. I am patient and enthusiastic.

===> I lead by example. <===

Their pledge sums up their personal and instructional goals and what they will do to promote the core beliefs and values of the school that day. Perhaps we need a daily pledge at our school too. I wonder if we can just steal the one from the karate school because they seem to have all the bases covered that we need to move forward.
