EWH_Final_27Feb04.pdf

Kacie Tulliani's insight:

Shift work and long hours can contribute to negative health effects including increased risk of cardiovascular diesease, gastrointestinal diesease, anxiety, depression, premature birth & low birth weights to name a few.

Long hours and shift work also have the potential to disrupt individuals work life balance which can result in additional stress with an increased recovery time.

Long hours are related to fatigue, fatigue is a factor in many serious injuries or fatlities.

Research also suggests that productivity decreases with extended hours.

So why do employees feel the need to work long hours and why are long hours still acceptable in today's workplaces when the health, safety and productivity are all jeopardised?

Kacie Tulliani's insight:

Transit Australia Group provide a great example of how injury prevention and management programs are achievable in any workplace (even workplaces where employees fail to report hazards and workplace incidents) and are beneficial to everyone involved.

Australian-WHS-Strategy-2012-2022.pdf

Kacie Tulliani's insight:

Many management representatives still perceive safety to be an added cost to the business, the approach used in the current national WHS strategy (Aiming to acheive  healthy, safe & productive working lives) also covertly aims to change this perception with the inclusion of productive working lives.....increased production equals increased profit (in most circumstances) the perception of safety being an added cost might diminish if it provides an opportunity for increased profit.

Stalybridge firm fined after half tonne car drops on mechanic | Health and Safety News | Kace's Scoop - Safety Starts with You | Scoop.it
The company had equipment which could have been used to drain the fuel tank safely but instead it allowed a worker to stand under the vehicle while it was being lifted by a forklift truck.
Kacie Tulliani's insight:

Using the correct equipment to get the job done safely may take a few extra minutes, taking a short-cut to save those few minutes may result in an incident.

Incidents only take a few seconds to happen but can require months or years to completely recover (if ever).

Are those few minutes really worth the risk?

Countering alcohol abuse will improve productivity - Scotsman

Countering alcohol abuse will improve productivity
Scotsman
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 stipulates that no staff member should be allowed to work when under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs.
Kacie Tulliani's insight:

You are almost guaranteed to stumble across a drug & alcohol policy plastered on a notice board in most workplaces. However outside the workplace there is a greater social acceptance for alcohol in most communities -sporting events, music festivals, street/footpath dining, BBQ's at local playgrounds or even a quick drink after work with colleagues. It is not hard to see how the same acceptance for alcohol infiltrates workplaces in particular workplace social events such as Christmas parties, conference dinners, celebrating tender wins, etc.

Warning Signs: How Pesticides Harm the Young Brain

Warning Signs: How Pesticides Harm the Young Brain | Kace's Scoop - Safety Starts with You | Scoop.it
A pathbreaking study detects a range of developmental problems in children born to mothers who toiled in pesticide-treated fields—but will anything be done?
Kacie Tulliani's insight:

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are produced for pesticides, most recommend PPE usage to prevent inhalation and absorption through the eyes & skin. If the person undertaking the spraying has to be that cautious to provide them with sufficient protection, shouldn't the same precautions be required for any person coming into contact with the pesticide?

More information which is easily digestable should be made available to persons working or living in the vicinity of the area, a basic danger do not enter sign doesn't provide sufficient information and can easily be misinterpreted as "the danger is only present if you enter the area"; What about pesticide transported as airbourne particles? or water from run-off?

Bad Choices Lead to Workplace Accidents

Bad Choices Lead to Workplace Accidents | Kace's Scoop - Safety Starts with You | Scoop.it
Kacie Tulliani's insight:

Often when a workplace incident occurs everyone is so focused on the individuals directly involved that they fail to see that it is the company as a whole (& the management team) who have also failed and allowed this to happen.

Focusing on the attitudes towards safety throughout the business and managements acceptance to tolerate unsafe behaviours or disregard for safety should also contribute to the incident investigation and employees at all levels involved should be held accountable.

Safety, everyone plays a part.

Treadmill workstation benefits employees, employers, study says - Medical Xpress

Treadmill workstation benefits employees, employers, study says - Medical Xpress | Kace's Scoop - Safety Starts with You | Scoop.it
Treadmill workstation benefits employees, employers, study says Medical Xpress This team brought together faculty from a public administration program, a business school and an academic health center, and is an example of the multi-disciplinary...
Kacie Tulliani's insight:

Treadmill's instead of desk chairs, sounds like a great way to get people moving and improve physical fitness, but before we all go converting our seated workstations into a moving workstation the cost of workers compensation claims (associated with the treadmill set-up) needs to be investigated.

It's great to see an initiative to improve the health & wellbeing of employees without reducing the productivity but you don't want to place the same  employees at risk of incident whether it is a physical (injury) or psychological caused by the stigma attached to body image or expected health benefits.

Not convinced that this is the best initiative to imrpove the health & well being of employees.

Safety blitz on building sites after Barangaroo fire - Sydney Morning Herald

Safety blitz on building sites after Barangaroo fire - Sydney Morning Herald | Kace's Scoop - Safety Starts with You | Scoop.it
Sydney Morning Herald Safety blitz on building sites after Barangaroo fire Sydney Morning Herald A team of 30 safety inspectors will launch a blitz on major building sites across Sydney and regional NSW in response to the Barangaroo fire and other...
Kacie Tulliani's insight:

The WorkCover announced blitz is a great initiative to start tackling the unsafe work practices that seem to be occuring in the construction industry. With only 30 inspectors for a period of 6 weeks, focusing on commercial development in Sydney and rural NSW I'm unsure if this will have enough of an impact to force a positive step in the right direction when it comes to safety in the building industry. Will WorkCover have enough time to thoroughly inspect the industry or will they only have an opportunity to scratch at the surface?

Brian Parker of the CFMEU has summed this up nicely "The six week period is only a band-aid solution".

Workplaces to get a healthy funding boost
Fraser Coast Chronicle
"Safety in the workplace doesn't just mean injury prevention. "It's also about promoting healthy diet choices and physical exercise to reduce the risk of chronic disease.
Kacie Tulliani's insight:

G.J Devilly once stated "A healthy workforce is a more productive workforce". It is great to see another council supporting businesses big in small in their quest to improve the overall health of their employees rather than only focus on workplace incidents; After all doesn't the "H" in WHS stand for health?
