"Nobody gets something for nothing in the reading game."

"All attempts at gaining literary polish must begin with judicious reading," H.
Gregory Harris's insight:

Preview, skim and scan, chunking text ... best advice Mr. Cosby gives is this requires constant practice/use. Teaching Students How to Analyze Text

Teaching Students How to Analyze Text | K-8 Literacy Learning Strategies | Scoop.it

Teaching students how to analyze text closely. Text analysis constitutes referring back to a text to find evidence to support a conclusion.

Gregory Harris's insight:

A small group collaborative situation to analyze text ... modelled by teacher first (maybe twice, three times?) then responsibility is released to small groups.

Learning activity lends itself well to having a gallery walk when all groups are done. (Gallery walk looks like students checking out others work, moving from chart to chart ... teacher may moderate as walk goes on and/or whole group discusses various points they see from all group work ... key is to end up with a strong idea what the key text points were ... the perspectives of all students often surprises with unique insights.

Another graphic organizer is the Story Map.
Gregory Harris's insight:

Key point in here is developing metacognition with students ... when they understand that they don't understand and can detail why they are having trouble, they are well on the way to understanding -- it's the self-awareness and knowing to focus on other methods/strategies to resolve the lack of understanding that our students need.

Gregory Harris's insight:

The ideas are key here (not so much the titles - I recommend working with your teacher librarian to build a good collection of titles that could be used for various grade levels). Strong introductions, similies & metaphors, varying sentence structures ... strong conclusions.
