Educational Leadership:Creativity Now!:Fundamentals of Creativity

Educational Leadership:Creativity Now!:Fundamentals of Creativity | K-12 School Libraries | Scoop.it
Founded in 1943, ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) is an educational leadership organization dedicated to advancing best practices and policies for the success of each learner.
Susan Grigsby @sksgrigsby's insight:

Delving into the "hot topic" of creativity, authors Ronald Beghetto and James Kaufman address what creativity is and how a push to teach it may be doing "more harm than good..." Very interesting take on this issue.

Why We Need School Libraries

Why We Need School Libraries | K-12 School Libraries | Scoop.it
This was written by a parent in Los Angeles, who blogs as the Red Queen in LA: Disarticulating Public Schools It was a bad day 30 years ago when some business management-type decided to restructure...
Susan Grigsby @sksgrigsby's insight:

I have followed Diane Ravitch for years and am deeply impressed with what she has to say about the current state of public schools and their libraries. This is my favorite line: "Libraries may be service-oriented, but the service they provide is fundamental support for the essentially solitary activity of learning." She goes on to say that libraries "(nurture) the intellectual space of the pupil, to provide the support and safety necessary for that process of learning, the rearranging of one’s existing canon of knowledge into a novel set of explanatory connections."

There are more than two dozen ways to flip the classroom thanks to this handy visual. They're brief but designed to get students learning everywhere.
Susan Grigsby @sksgrigsby's insight:

I am already a fan of Mia MacMeekin after seeing her 27 Things a Teacher Librarian Does For You graphic. Now she has presented this visual for flipping the classroom. If you have teachers toying with this idea, this would be a great visual to share!

Why We Need To Reform Education Now

Why We Need To Reform Education Now | K-12 School Libraries | Scoop.it
In the ten years since the launch of No Child Left Behind, these efforts have intensified. The results have been unimpressive. Graduation rates continue to falter and students and teachers alike are becoming more disaffected.
Susan Grigsby @sksgrigsby's insight:

I have long followed Sir Ken Robinson and his views/writings on creativity and public school. I love this part: To improve our schools, we have to humanize them and make education personal to every student and teacher in the system. Education is always about relationships. Great teachers are not just instructors and test administrators: They are mentors, coaches, motivators, and lifelong sources of inspiration to their students.

Right? Right?? Why do we let corporate bottom lines drive curriculum? Why do we let well-meaning but misinformed legislators get away with the draconian measures put upon schools to hammer out citizens in a factory-model setting that long ago became obsolete?

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, May 7, 2013 7:12 PM

I think the word reform is too mild. We need to transform education. We need creative and innovative learners matched with creative and innovative learners who fill the roles of being a teacher.

Susan Grigsby @sksgrigsby's comment, May 20, 2013 1:37 PM
Ivon: I totally agree. We need teachers that are comfortable with learning and being students and we need students that are allowed the space to teach.

Susan Grigsby @sksgrigsby's insight:

My take-away: where is the mention of the professional school librarian whose job it is to teach these skills? Is there one even working at the authors' school? I appreciate the comment, "As social studies teachers, it is our job to be cognizant of how these changes are having an impact on our discipline." As a media specialist it is OUR job to help teachers before they make some of the mistakes outlined in this blog post. When a quality, professional library media specialist works with dynamic teachers such as the authors of this blog, the students win big time - AND the teachers can focus on the social studies and the media specialist can focus on the information literacy.

How Lego Is Constructing the Next Generation of Engineers

How Lego Is Constructing the Next Generation of Engineers | K-12 School Libraries | Scoop.it
With programmable robots and student competitions, Lego is making “tinkering with machines cool again”
Susan Grigsby @sksgrigsby's insight:

This is just another example of the elegant truth that learning through play is so natural to the human being. Think of all the kids who could be opened up through playing with Legos - constructing, failing, trying again. Could it really be this simple to guide young minds toward STEM thinking? I think so...
