Oh, and another twist -- some of these documentaries are not backstories, but do connect with the brand in a particular way.

What a refreshing and thought provoking post! The author, Floris Koot, makes a convincing case for updating the hero's journey. He explains how our addiction to the current hero's journey has gotten us into a lot of trouble. Business guru Rosabeth Moss Canter, on the faculty at Harvard Business School, pointed this out many years ago. Her position is that the hero's journey in companies leads to "cowboy heros" who can't effectively lead.

 

Koot makes a similar case, although much more detailed. He then suggests an update to the hero's journey to fit our modern needs. Right on Koot!

 

I am sure this article will make people mad, who make their living off the current hero's journey. Oh well. Time for an upgrade.

Happy Monday! Here's what I love about this article: the author understands what real time storytelling is, and that to make it work, marketers must engage in real time listening. Why do this? To accelerate results. 

 

As the author Keith Richey points out, most marketing narratives are created in isolation back at the office. However, "...enduring narratives that are dreamed up in isolation have a hard time changing and responding to what’s happening out there amongst their audiences."

 

So true! The opportunity Richey points out is for marketers to listening and dig into real time conversations/engagement that is happening on social networks/the web and tap into the stories being told. The next step is to respond to the stories being told with ones of your own.

 

Here's what Richey misses, though: he assumes listening to stories is the same as listening to any conversation. But it is not. Story listening requires listening without an agenda (so people feel genuinely heard), and then asking reflective questions of the storyteller to understand meaning, motivation, desires, emotions, etc. Story listening on social media/the web is no different. To celebrate its customers' love of hiking and exploring the outdoors, REI launched Every Trail Connects, a series of three six- to eight-minute videos that tell emotional stories from three of America's hiking trails.

The outdoor retailer REI just launched a new campaign which shows storytelling done right. It's a fabulous expression of brand storytelling combined with sharing stories of customers where they are the heroes.

 

What is even more intriguing is the position REI took about creating these videos: they focused on long-form storytelling instead of quickie snapshots. Each video is about 5-6 minutes long, and I couldn't stop watching them.

 

As the company says, if you've got good content and compelling stories that focus on people's passion, your audience will invest more time in you as a company. In other words, they will read your long form stories, and watch your long form videos.

Here's a fascinating article exploring the link between empathy and generosity.

 

Now we've know for awhile that storytelling builds empathy between people, and that building storytelling skills means you are building your empathy muscles.

 

What we haven't yet linked through hard neorscience research was the effect of empathy on generosity to others. Now we have that research and the results.

 

Turns out the link is significant. This article shares the research and findings. Frankly, I'm glad I wasn't a test subject (you'll know why when you read the article).

 

As the researchers state, we now know what areas in the brain are involved in empathy and generosity -- and what happens in the brain when people are stingy.

The author, Clifton Parker, points out that, "Signature stories...may be standalone stories like those of Nordstrom, Molson, and L.L. Bean that have a single, complete narrative. Or they may consist of several stories based on similar messages and themes. Either way, they can inspire both customers and employees."

At this week’s C2 conference, one of the visionaries at Google introduced the audience to a new phenomenon.

Is this buzz word for real, or what?

 

I've seen this twice now, and am wondering if hypertelling is just a bunch of hype -- or if there's really something to pay attention to.

 

Apparently, this is the latest game-changer in storytelling. The author, David McMillan, is reporting on the latest development from Mike Yapp at Google. Google is now saying that we all must now morph into hypertelling.

 

So what is hypertelling? According to Google, we can now forget the teller. “It’s no longer about an audience,” Yapp said. “The user is in control.” The user, instead of watching a TV show, will create their own episodes. It's all about setting up storytelling experiences that the user controls.

 

Well, I can see this happening as a result of Virtual Reality (VR). But I'm a very busy woman who has more projects going on than there are hours in the day. When I stop work around 6 pm, all I want to do is watch or read good stories -- not play more, create more, or do more work to create another story.

 

In the end, it's about balance -- there's a time and place for it. 

 

Actually, this notion of hypertelling has been around for thousands of years -- it's called "play". And obviously, Google doesn't understand the dynamic of co-creation in our current forms of storytelling.

 

This article does as some really good questions though regarding the notion of hypertelling to conferences/events and user experiences. I think this is very useful.

Just yesterday I finished putting together a storytelling program for startups to create their pitch deck. Lots of specific stories are needed in order to create a winning pitch to venture capitalists.

 

Then today this post pops up on my screen. Talk about serendipity! What I like about the article are the 4 story types that a startup can take. Each startup story is unique, yet typically falls into one of these 4 story types.

 

What I don't like about the article is that the original title is "4 Keys To Crafting A Winning Startup Story". It sounds like you are going to get tips for crafting your startup story. The article isn't about that, but it does lay out the 4 types very well.

At first I thought this article was just going to be the same-old-same-old stuff on why storytelling is important in marketing. Yawn. Been there. Done that.

 

But as I scanned the post I said, "Hey, I love the visuals! And the points made are different than I expected. Yay!"

 

So here it is. I particularly like the points about Value and Memory. Really nice.

What does this mean? It means that Ritz Carlton staff are constantly on the lookout for situations where they can create a WOW! experience that customers will keep telling stories about.

Here's a fascinating article on specific storytelling strategies Patagonia has been using in its marketing and activism that is really paying off.

 

They are focusing on strategies like "New Localism" and internal nimbleness. And really leveraging the stories of their Ambassadors (i.e., not company stories).

 

This is great stuff and they are really on a roll. There are lessons here for all of us. What insights from the article can you adopt for your business to accelerate your success?
