It's just crazy enough to sound real.
Karen Dietz's insight:

It's Friday and time for a good laugh. Recently Advertising Insider poked fun at its industry by putting together this slick tough-in-cheek video.

Yes, I love the poke at "storytellers"! It wouldn't be funny if it weren't so true :)

Happy Friday and enjoy the weekend.

Telling A Story That Hooks Audiences: A Fab Example

Telling A Story That Hooks Audiences: A Fab Example | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
Karen Dietz's insight:

Colleague Michael Harris wrote this blog post recently and I couldn't stop cracking up! I laughed so hard I had to read the story to my husband Tim. He laughed just as hard.

Michael uses storytelling in his sales training and he uses this story to demonstrate why it works. And to point out the difference between 'corporate speak' and storytelling. Imagine telling this story in corporate language. We'd be bored to tears.

But here's another way to think about this story: we all have at least one story like this. A story when we screwed up big time. A story about a time we failed. A story about a near miss. A story about good friends who stick around even after misadventures.

All of these stories have a place in business. Because they make you human. When shared authentically they form and deepen relationships. They let us know that even when we screw up, there is redemption. This is how we learn from others -- about what not to do, and about being human at work.

Sharing ups and downs helps us build deeper and stronger relationships. It might surprise you to experience how showing your vulnerability actually generates more trust and respect in you and for you. When we hide our failures from others, we idealize ourselves while separating ourselves from others at the same time. Not good.

So read this article and go have a good laugh. Then ask yourself, "What story do I share in return?" Michael's story should spark one within you.

Capture that story and share it at the right time in a business setting. You'll be glad you did.

7 Great iPad Apps for Creating Comic Strips for Biz Stories

7 Great iPad Apps for Creating Comic Strips for Biz Stories | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it

The art of comic creation is one of the best representation of creativity at work. As teachers and educators, we can use the power and versatility of iPad to cultivate a creative culture within our classes and among our students through helping them tinker with and design comics. Here is a list of some great iPad apps you can use for this purpose...

Via Baiba Svenca
Karen Dietz's insight:

What fun! Looking for a creative way to share your business stories? Try turning them into a comic book.

Here is a list of apps (I found this on fellow curator @Baiba Svenca's
Digital Presentations in Education scoop.it) for the iPad to help you do this.

For folks like me who's drawing skills are at the level of stick figures, it looks like the first 3 on the list are the best. Some of the other tools require actual drawing/sketching skills.

Hope you have fun playing with these :))

Jargon, Branded Content, & Storytelling

Jargon, Branded Content, & Storytelling | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
One of the takeaways from Advertising Week in New York last week is the rise of “branded content”. Brands are embracing the potential of branded content to blur the lines between advertising and entertainment.
Karen Dietz's insight:

LOL -- cartoonist Tom Fishburne does it again. Forget the hype. Forget the jargon. Just focus on telling great stories. That's your ticket to success.

And go read Fishburne's blog post -- he makes some great points there about how "branded content" is now being treated as a commodity. Since business storytelling is all about creating relationships, not customers as commodities, you can see the disconnect. "Branded content" as commodity typically generates bad storytelling. So let's not go there.

Enjoy Fishburne's humor today as a lift to get us through the rest of the week.

"Skip This Ad" cartoon from Tom Fishburne: Tell a story or else! | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
In advertising, there's no such thing as a captive audience. It's easier than ever for people to tune out experiences they don't like (although, sadly, this doesn't apply to boring meetings).
Karen Dietz's insight:

LOL, it's Sunday, I'm slogging away at the computer and ran across the latest cartoon from my favorite biz cartoonist Tom Fishburne. It made me laugh so I wanted to share. And take a break from my writing project :))

Why did I grin when I saw this? Because meetings (along with PowerPoint presentations) can be so boring! Don't you just wish you could be the guy in the cartoon writing on the wall? Ahhhh, fantasies abound...

Moral: create storied ads, share stories in meetings, craft storied presentations! Check out the other cartoons (especially the one on authenticity and transparency) and enjoy the day --

Humour definitely has its place in business storytelling and in business presentations and we encourage you to use it – you just need to use it purposefully and appropriately.
Karen Dietz's insight:

Here is a quick article with great tips on how to use humor in your business stories -- and how NOT to.

Read these insights and then do a reality check on your stories. Can you add humor? Stop using humor? Or switch your humor to be less offensive?

The Case for Humor

The Case for Humor | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
Here are three powerful reasons why using humor attracts customers and helps communication.

This is just a quick post with a powerful message -- don't leave home without your sense of humor!

What I appreciate about this article is the reminder to add humor to the business stories you share in your marketing and branding. Because, as the article says, it attracts customers, establishes rapport, and creates alignment. And it makes us smile!

All Is Fair In Business

A shopkeeper was dismayed when a brand new business much like his own opened up next door and erected a huge sign which read 'BEST DEALS.'

He was horrified when another competitor opened up on his right, and announced its arrival with an even larger sign, reading 'LOWEST PRICES.'

The shopkeeper panicked, until he got an idea. He put the biggest sign of all over his own shop. It read: 'MAIN ENTRANCE'

See? Now go have more fun :)
