HopeMob Charity Website Is the Reddit of Giving--New Twist for Stories & $$

HopeMob Charity Website Is the Reddit of Giving--New Twist for Stories & $$ | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it

New charity website HopeMob takes a cue from Reddit by letting users vote-up the content [story] they favor. The soon-to-be launched website is the second “social giving” site founded by tech and humanitarian entrepreneur Shaun King. King said he wants HopeMob to be a platform for spotlighting untold stories and getting people help.

Now here's an ingenious use of stories that any for profit or nonprofit org can use: story voting.

This is another unique way of linking crowdsourcing with storytelling.  You receive 23 story points and get to use these to vote on the stories you find the most compelling.  This eventually leads to donations.

Find out what happens next by reading the article.

The only question that remains for me is, are these really going to be stories?

Nevertheless, how can you use this idea?

  1. If you are a nonprofit -- hook up with HopeMob and Shaun King. Or tailor his idea to your own organization's platform and needs.
  2. If you are a for profit -- collect business stories from your community, share them, give your readers story points to use for voting, and offer the winners your products/services for free (just an idea off the top of my head), which generates more stories, goodwill, prospects, and business growth
  3. I'm sure you will have other ideas!

I love human ingenuity and HopeMob is a perfect example.

Neuroscience Proves Why Your [Nonprofit] Stories Move Supporters To Action @johnhaydon

Neuroscience Proves Why Your [Nonprofit] Stories Move Supporters To Action @johnhaydon | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it

"In your brain, you have neurons called “mirror” neurons. These brain cells are essentially the “soft-wiring” behind empathy. It’s why you feel sadness when a friend is struggling, and happy when they overcome an obstacle. You experience their ups and downs as if they are yours.

This video explains more about the science behind empathy. You’ll learn why stories work better than stats in your online (and offline) appeals. You’ll learn why pictures elicite a strong emotional response than text."

Don't let the title fool you -- even though this is slanted to non-profits, we all need to know this information.

By watching this video (which takes very complex notions and breaks them down into simple-to-understand chunks), you will learn a alot about empathy. I quibble with a few points, but overall it's a good synopsis.

What is the connection to story?  Well, by sharing a story you connect with your audience through empathy.  So the more you understand about how and why empathy works, the more you will master business storytelling.

Enjoy the video and let me know what you think!

The Power of Storytelling – Takeaways from Social Media for Nonprofits in Atlanta

The Power of Storytelling – Takeaways from Social Media for Nonprofits in Atlanta | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it

"The Global Soap Project is a small non-profit that began in 2009 with a beautifully simple concept: collect a portion of the 2.6 million bars of partially used soap disposed of every day by U.S. hotels, reprocess it into new bars and distribute it to people left vulnerable to disease due to lack of proper hygiene and sanitation supplies."

Well, that's is just the start of the story.  What I love about this post is the realization that "Moving the story from HOW to WHY is critical."

The beginning of the story above is all about the HOW.  But once you move the story to the WHY (what life is like without having soap), the world opens up and readers engage.

So true, so true.  There is more here.  Read the rest of the article for for insights and inspiration from storytelling in the non-profit world that we can also use in for-profit businesses.

8 Great Examples of Nonprofit Storytelling

8 Great Examples of Nonprofit Storytelling | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it

Here are various examples of what the author is calling visual storytelling or digital storytelling.  Well...a few are stories (some are better than others) and others are examples of sophisticated messaging.  Even though they are non-profit products, they are very instructional for businesses.

Unfortunately I'm traveling and trying to watch these on a slow wireless network.  It is very frustrating. So I'm not able to do a thorough review as possible.

But watch these videos and tell me what you think about them by leaving your comments below.

Is the video an actual story or sophisticated messaging (which can be very clever and powerful in its own right)?

If an actual story is being told then does it have the following?

  1. Beginning, middle, end,
  2. Aperson you can identify with
  3. A challenge/problem to overcome
  4. Overcoming the challenge/problem,
  5. Key message at the end that moves you to some sort of action
  6. Is the story effective with a strong ending?

Oh, I almost forgot -- at the end of the article is a great list of resources and tutorials to help ANY business or non-profit in creating digital stories.  So go grab that list.

I'm looking forward to your comments!

Storytelling and the Art of Email Writing

Storytelling and the Art of Email Writing | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
How can smart organizations harness the power of stories to communicate with supporters and get them to donate?

If you want to know how to craft email stories to promote your business (or non-profit) and/or raise funds, then read this free downloadable PDF ASAP.

I really like how the authors give tips to avoid the Personal Story Trap (what not to do when sharing a personal story).  I think it's great they also spend time showing the difference between 'explaining' stories and 'compelling' stories.

Even though this is written for non-profits, inhale these tips and start writing storied emails and blogs that really work.

This PDF is full of very clear examples so you'll know exactly what to do -- and what not to do.

Infographics for Nonprofits: The New Storytelling

Infographics for Nonprofits: The New Storytelling | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it

"As Beth Kanter remarked on a public Google Plus thread about creating useful infographics, “I think that information visualization is a necessity in this age of data overload and seeing the forest beyond the trees.” I agree with that statement, and personally jump to view the “shiny new storytelling toy” whenever I see an infographic. Infographics represent an exciting new storytelling avenue for nonprofit organizations, enabling them to share important data stories, visually."

I don't know how I missed this post by colleague and fellow curator Debra Askanase but it's a good one!

Debra makes the point that infographics can and should tell a story.  She then gives tips on how to do so and resources to use.

And I love the infographic at the top of the article! It's a perfect example of one that blends both data and storytelling elements.

What are the story elements an infographic can use to be more effective?

  1. It needs to be emotionally engaging in ways that offer people a way to make a difference
  2. Metphor
  3. A beginning, middle & end with a story arc
  4. Statement of a problem and ways for resolution
  5. Story triggers -- graphics and words that trigger stories within the minds of viewers
  6. A point, a key message
  7. Suggested actions to take

Not all infographics need to tell a story. Before embarking on creating an infographic, ask yourself the following strategic questions:

  1. Who is my target audience?
  2. What important information does my target audience need or want to hear?
  3. Is the purpose of the infographic to share information, educate people, or create a context for understanding an issue?
  4. Is the purpose of the infographic to spark action -- either donations, support, or advocacy?
  5. What is my key message? What do I want my viewers to take away from the experience?

If you answered YES to #4, then you need your infographic to tell a story.  If you answered YES to #3, then your infographic only needs to convey information.

Go read the article for more great infographic insights.

The Starter Guide to Non-profit [& Biz] Video Storytelling

The Starter Guide to Non-profit [& Biz] Video Storytelling | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
Create video for your nonprofit the right way. Learn how to get started with strategy, planning, and process. Free eBook!

I had a peek at free ebook that I downloaded and like it very much! It's a good primer to get started for any kind of business who wants to create video stories.  I particularly like its solid advice on how to build a story, their discussion of story structures, and even better yet -- examples (videos) of specfic types of stories nonprofits need to share.

It's a little light on the technical aspects but does include a piece at the end on how to figure out whether to create your videos in-house or hire the work out.

The other piece I really like about the guide is its emphasis on thinking strategically about your stories and linking them to a fundraising (sales) campaign.

Go grab this book.  I think you will find it invaluable -- whether you are a non-profit or for-profit organization.
