Leaders + Storytelling: Edelman's 2016 Trust Barometer A Surprise

Leaders + Storytelling: Edelman's 2016 Trust Barometer A Surprise | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
Trust is the most valuable commodity in business, which is why we are all in the trust business. Tony Gnau looks at this year's Trust Barometer.
Karen Dietz's insight:

OK -- hot off the press is a recent study from the Edelman Trust detailing its Trust Barometer.

Who do people trust most today? Surprisingly enough -- businesses. They want businesses to lead the way when it comes to societal issues.

Specifically, they want leaders to be more visible. They want to get to know CEOs.

As the author of the post points out, the best way to do that, of course, is through storytelling -- even though many leaders are reluctant to be so visible, transparent, and vulnerable.

The author's solution (who produces videos) is to make videos of these leaders telling stories. Well, as we all know, the highest leverage point for leaders is in-person storytelling. That's the first go-to strategy. Sharing stories via video is your next strategy. Think of the 2 strategies blending together with in-person telling always being your first option if possible.

So remember this point regarding storytelling and leadership if you want to maximize trust.

Want Success? The One Essential Leadership Skill That Storytelling Helps With

Want Success? The One Essential Leadership Skill That Storytelling Helps With | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
Big ideas are important, but being a good listener is just as critical a skill to develop.
Karen Dietz's insight:

DDI just released this study (15,000 participants at 300 companies in 18 countries) and which skills wins hands down?

Empathy.

Even more surprising, only 40% of those surveyed were assessed as being able to listen and respond with empathy. Ouch!!

What's the best way to build empathy? Through sharing stories. Check out the research https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1a7tiA1Qzo

But that also requires skills in story listening. Yes, listening to a story requires different behaviors that just listening to conversation, which Lori Silverman and I talk about in our bestselling book "Business Storytelling For Dummies".

And anyway, most people don't listen well anyway. Instead of deeply listening we're having a monologue with ourselves of what we are going to say in return.

So share lots of stories and use your story listening skills. These are what make an impactful and influential leader.

Leadership: It's a Conversation With Storytelling

Leadership: It's a Conversation With Storytelling | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
How to improve employee engagement and alignment in today’s flatter, more networked organizations
Karen Dietz's insight:

Here is an article fresh from Harvard Business Review (HBR) discussion the most critical part of leadership -- that a leader's effectiveness is not so much about command and control, but about conversations with storytelling.

This is how most of our storytelling in life occurs anyway -- in conversation. There's a continuum of business storytelling that starts on one end with conversational storytelling, which then moves all the way to the other end with performance storytelling at the podium.

What I like about this article is how it pays attention to the dynamics of great conversational storytelling. Like intimacy, trust, listening, interactivity, etc.

As a leader, if you want better results then read this article to understand more about the power of conversations. It's the foundation for making change happen.

Story Renewal -- The Founder of TOMS Reimagining Its Mission

Story Renewal -- The Founder of TOMS Reimagining Its Mission | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
Mycoskie realized that a desire to sustain hypergrowth had pushed the company away from its mission. So he took a sabbatical to figure out the future of TOMS and his role in it. The improbable result was an expansion into coffee.
Karen Dietz's insight:

This post, written by Blake Mycoskie, founder of TOMS (Tomorrow's Shoes), not only tells the story of how TOMS was founded, but also the process Blake went through to renew the company's story.

Renewing your business stories is a process everyone must eventually go through. But it is rarely talked about except as a "rebranding" exercise.

Yet renewing your tired, old, worn-out, or stuck stories is fundamental to business success. You'll know it's time to renew those stories when you get bored telling them, or they just don't have the "juice" they once had.

So go read this post, discover Blake's journey for renewing the TOMS story, and evaluate whether your stories could use a refresh. If they do, then get busy 'cause 2016 is almost here!

Leaders need to talk less....and listen more.

(From the article): Ask: Beyond surveys is this little known ancient technique called ‘asking’. We forget about this ‘old school’ way of finding things out in our world of being very ‘busy’ and relying on technology to communicate for us.  But asking is the best way to find stories AND value the experience of your people at the same time. Ask your customers or employees to tell you a story directly. If you want to use Skype, Facetime or even your blog, go for it. Ask them how your business has made a difference in their lives. Ask them to tell you a story about how you or someone who works for you has helped them. If you are talking to customers, you will have discovered golden information for your marketing team and leadership that demonstrates your impact. If you are talking to your staff, you will find out how well your Managers are doing and how engaged your team is in their work.

Here are 3 ways to get the most insights from this article:

  1. Read it through once as is.
  2. Read it through again, and substitute the word "storytelling" for the word "journalism".
  3. Read it through a third time, and substitute the word "marketing" for the word "journalism".

The Secret To Speaking & Storytelling W/ Passion From Wayne Dyer

The Secret To Speaking & Storytelling W/ Passion From Wayne Dyer | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
Inspiring speakers have an abundance of passion for their topic—the burning desire to share their ideas.
Karen Dietz's insight:

The famed and much beloved self-help author and motivational speaker, Wayne Dyer, passed away this last weekend, yet his advice lives on.

In this post, written by Carmine Gallo for Forbes, he shares with us the secret to speaking success that also applies to storytelling.

Passion is a tired and overused word these days. When someone says, "Speak/tell with passion" it gets translated into speaking/telling with vigor, being loud, wildly gesticulating, and being forceful. All of that can convey passion -- but so can silence, standing still, standing rock solid in your convictions.

So what is Wayne Dyer's secret for successful speaking and storytelling that allows a better kind of authentic passion to emerge? Read the article and I think you'll be surprised. The points he makes are not commonly recognized but totally right on.

Enjoy this piece and may the storytelling Force be with you.

4 Ways Storytelling the Journey Has Become Hotter Than Celebrating the Outcome | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
Social media is all about demonstrating the work -- not just glorifying successes.
Karen Dietz's insight:

What an insightful post, written by Matt Mayberry for Entrepreneur magazine. He's identified something new -- that the story of your journey is endlessly fascinating. And if the ending hasn't happened yet, not to worry! The journey itself is a story worthy to be told.

Mayberry gives us 4 ways to think about our journey and how to tell those stories. I say stories because being an entrepreneur, my journey has many different kinds of stories to it.

I also like that the author links to 2 sites who are sharing entrepreneur's journeys. I checked both out and for sure, they are a mix of stories and good advice. So neither one are all stories all the time, which makes sense from providing a mix of content for readers.

Is Business Storytelling A Natural Talent or Acquired Skill? | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
At the start of our Storytelling for Leaders® programs, we always ask the question ‘who thinks they are a storyteller?’ Very few people raise their hands.
Karen Dietz's insight:

Ah ha! Here's a fab post by Mark Schenk from biz storytelling colleagues at Anecdote.

Yes, we are all natural storytellers, but just like we can all sing, if we want to do it well we take singing lessons. We can all write, but if we want to be excellent writers, we take writing classes.

The same goes for storytelling -- if you want to be a great business storyteller, get coached in business storytelling. I love what this article says about the kind of practice that actually builds skills, and practice that doesn't.

Brash and egotistical leadership only takes you so far.
Karen Dietz's insight:

This is a companion article to the previous scoop on the 5 benefits of story listening. This post, however, is about how quiet or humble leaders succeed.

For many of the leaders I coach, the underlying assumption is learning storytelling skills to they can make a splash, be memorable, visible, and 'out there'.

Yet I've also worked with plenty of leaders who are introverted, quiet, and less concerned about a grand entrance. Both types of leaders can be engaging, charismatic, and very powerful.

What I like about this post is that it talks about 3 habits those quiet leaders share that make them successful. Actually, any leaders can adopt these habits, and I love learning more about what the quieter ones do.

Part of their habit routine includes listening thoughtfully, and focusing on appreciation. The article by Chris Barez-Brown shares more about the 3 habits, and gives solid examples to illustrate the points.
