It's Friday and time for some fun! I've got 2 pieces to share with you to bring you into the weekend.


This is the first. I love mashups and here's a beauty -- urban spoken word poetry mixed with classical orchestra. Sounds boring? Hah! It's anything but.


Even better - it's a terrific example of using mashups integrated as part of a brand. Maybe it will give you ideas for your own work.


Watch the first video also which mixes rockin' celtic music with fast hip-hop dancing. For years I've been a big fan of art -- and storytelling -- that pushes boundaries. The short videos here are perfect examples.

OK -- this is one of the better articles I have found to date on different story structures that you can use when sharing your business stories. 


I love love love that the author tells when and why to use each structure. The information is a gold mine.


I also like that it includes structures not typically discussed -- yet are common and powerful.


Then the author, Ffion (no full name listed -- what a shame)  knocks it out of the park by giving us video examples to watch for each structure. Yeah!


Well, I wish I could give Ffion an acknowledging tweet -- but without a name or contact links I'm lost. Let this be a lesson to all bloggers....


That said, go read the article. It's a gem!

How storytelling is working in B2B and SaaS industries, where past marketing tactics were mathematical, calculated, and much less human than storytelling.

OK -- the year is winding up and here's a list of brands that do great storytelling.


Only problem is -- NOT!


Of the 15 listed here, only 3 are doing really good storytelling: Google, Workday, and GE. These I really love. Check them out and then see if you can tell the difference between these awesome stories and the rest. Then be more like Google, Workday, and GE.


For me, the rest of the "stories" are product descriptions or pontifications. Well, this is my experience for the last 5 years at least: lots of emphasis storytelling, yet the amount of real storytelling going on is hard to come by. That means $$$ and opportunities are left on the table.


Oh, when will companies get it?


Here's my wish for 2015: instead of only 20% of brands doing any actual (and effective) storytelling, let's see that percentage skyrocket to 80%!

If you've got a great story to share (because you've paid attention to building your storytelling skills), and now it's time to turn it into a video.


Ugh. Sounds like a big headache. Until you read this article, which goes over all the tools and software needed to make it EASY. Yeah!


One tool they recommend is Camtasia. Well, I struggled with this program. Ultimately I abandoned it because of the learning curve involved -- and I just didn't have the time. But that's me. Maybe your experience is/will be different.


But I can't wait to try the other tools! They do sound easy. I hope this article helps you tackle and master creating videos quickly and easily. Let's have fun making more of them!

ugh. I'm a supporter of the social media summit, but it seems like every article they write lately is a blatant ad for SMS. That's not what content should be used for. I'm really disappointed with that strategy.

When I commissioned a video of the prayer vigil, I got back a bunch of comments about how great the prayer vigil was. Arrgh! That was all wrong.

This post and experience shared here comes from the world of religion. And it's a great story about the problems with most videos organizations produce. Mainly that they are NOT stories!!


I so appreciate the insights author Len Wilson shares with us. And his fix for the problem. 


And here's my particular caution: don't turn your video over to a video team and expect a story. Many of them don't know how to tell a story. Personal experience speaks. Make sure you know the story you want to tell FIRST. Then make sure they do it.


Don't waste your time making worthless videos. Follow Len's advice here and you'll come out way ahead in the business game.

Excellent article about video storytelling. A good producer should start by discussing the story you want to tell - what do you want viewers to think, feel or do from watching your video? What's the overarching message you're trying to convey? Then the discussion should turn to deciding the content of the interviews and the visual components and how they'll support the story you want to tell. Pre-production planning should generally take twice as long as the shoot itself. Just because someone has the technical skills to shoot and edit video does not mean they know how to tell a compelling story with video.

Here is a terrific post from brand storytelling expert Omar Kattan. He reminds us that our customers are our best storytellers and that our job is to allow them to share their stories about the product/service we offer.


So true! As Omar says, businesses have to provide platforms for customers to share their stories. He goes on to share some good examples and links to other posts/examples that support this point.

OK -- here's the latest research on mobile video viewers and they are not spending time watching short 3-minute stories. They are watching stories that last lots longer.


Good news! But don't throw the baby out with the bathwater -- share stories that are both short and long. Just don't be afraid to create longer stories. Because truly, some stories just take longer to tell, and often shaving them down to a couple of minutes really guts them..


So share some short gems and add some long stories -- whether written or as videos. And dig into this research so you understand exactly what mobile video viewers are watching in various devices.

Now here is a powerful use of stories in business. In this case, this post talks about how Glenlivet is using personal stories in their branding efforts.


Glenlivet is premium single malt whiskey. In this campaign the company has successful men sharing stories about a poignant moment that was instrumental in their success.


As Troy Gorczyca Senior Brand Manager, Pernod Ricard, says, the goal of the series was to “showcase their triumphs, admit their failures, and highlight the moments that make us human.”


At first I thought "Oh, this is about CEOs bragging about some achievement they accomplished." But no -- these guys share about their parents, a mentor, or how a single phone call changed a life. Yeah! Disaster averted.


Now I have only one quibble -- how come these stories are only from guys???!!! Where are successful women's stories? It's not like we don't like or drink Glenlivet -- because we do! And we share stories over drinks just like guys do -- in fact, probably more.


Here's what's mystifying to me: the co-lead on this project is a woman. And the author of this article is a woman. Yet neither pointed out this discrepancy.


OK, rant over. The article talks a bit about how challenges in gathering the stories. And other insights are shared here. So go read it -- other than the gender issue, it's a good piece.

Many people have been asking me when my TEDx talk will be available and it's finally be posted for viewing.


During the presentation I not only talk a bit about my background and lessons I've learned about storytelling, but I also share a simply story listening process I learned years ago from storyteller Doug Lipman.


I use the process all the time in my work -- because it's so powerful, and because it is at the root of how work gets done, and how making a difference in the world really happens. Anyone can do this process and I encourage you to try it out.

Pitching your ideas to investors is telling a story. You need to get the attention and turn some heads. Hartman's tips are very useful, take a lookk and see what's in it for you. Standing up in front of a panel of investors, or a sitting at a boardroom table with a number of decision makers can be intimidatiing.

OK -- here's the second Friday Fun piece I promised you. This one will tug at your heart strings.


I couldn't stop watching this ad video -- at 6 minutes log! It's fabulous storytelling. When I started, I'm thinking to myself, "Yeah, right -- I wonder how long I'll last before I get bored." I was hooked though and was amazed 6 minutes flew by so fast. Talk about being engrossed.


There are actually 3 stories interwoven here. The piece is by Cartier jewelry for Valentines Day. It's very targeted brand storytelling. So far it's working for me!

Like all of us, economist Tyler Cowen loves a good story. But in this intriguing talk, he asks us to step away from thinking of our lives -- and our messy, complicated irrational world -- in terms of a simple narrative.

Want to start your week off right? Then watch this irreverent video full of truth about storytelling. You will laugh, your eyebrows will raise, and you will periodically nod your head in agreement. OR -- you'll get cranky.


Economist Tyler Cowen has a few things to teach us about storytelling. For example: life is messy and today we treat stories like Mr. Clean -- tidy ways to organize ourselves into a series of 7 little narrative boxes. Ouch! But true.


I like this guy. He calls a spade a spade. Life is messy. Storytelling is messy. Storytelling as a practice is full of contradictions, ethical conundrums, along with rich and deeply meaningful experiences. 


Don't fall into the trap of simplistic storytelling. Get real. Get honest. Get aware. Run to listen to this 16.5 minute video with practical advice at the end. It will enrich your life and your storytelling.

This is a terrific 4.22 minute video by Beth Comstock at General Electric (GE) explaining how and why they do storytelling. GE does a masterful job at business storytelling and are a great example to follow.


GE has their heads on straight about what makes an effective business story, which Comstock goes over here. Watch this video and take notes on what they are doing. Then do the same for an awesome 2015.

Brand Evolution has put together a bunch of fabulous short videos that are snippets of company stories, which together create the brand. This one is about Ben & Jerry's. I watched another on Levi's. L'Oreal is also featured, as is Apple and Volkswagon.


They are fun and a great way to point to a company's collection of stories that create their unique identity. And I love that Brand Evolution realizes that brand storytelling is made up of a bunch of stories -- i.e, you can't have just one!

Look up, Connect and Share A Story--video

My daughter shared this emotionally powerful video with me, and it made me reflect on how we as salespeople waste so much time in sales cycles, because we're...

The other night my husband Tim and I were out to dinner. At the table next to us was a teenage boy with his mom and dad. The kid was totally engaged in his meal and having a good time gobbling up the food. No phone or iPad for him!


His parents though? They spent the entire meal on their phones checking email and texting. They never once said a word to their son. You could tell the boy was used to it and was entertaining himself in their absence. Tim and I just shook our heads.


If ever there was a strong case for putting down the phone and connecting with others -- and swapping stories back and forth -- it's this video. I loved it and it really got me thinking. I think you will enjoy it too. It's a great reminder to stop, talk, and share stories.


It's OK if I'm not tethered to my cell. When work is done I can ignore it and my iPad to share the story of my day with my husband -- and listen to his in return :)

These are 4 essential principles for effective storytelling and filmmaker Ken Burns explains all really well.


I don't call them tips, because they are more than that. They truly are some of the best ways to think and be with your business stories. Principles like Find the drama and characters of your story and let them speak; tell the story your own way; and find the format in the story -- as opposed to stuffing a story into a predefined one-size-fits-all structure.


To quote the article, "Burns says that storytelling isn’t so much a process of arriving at a previously determined end, but about an investigation of the material."


If you can get that thought, it's revolutionary. The quote speaks to the teller's ability to learn more about the story by continually reflecting on it, becoming more self-aware. That self-awareness leads to not only better storytelling, but also deeper listening and greater empathy/connection with your listeners.


There is lots of food for thought here that will help make you a better teller of your business stories. And there are some terrific clips to illustrate the points. Have fun with this one.

This story is so powerful, in that it can be and is relational to many people we all come in to contact with every day. The tears that resulted were from one of joy when I saw this man's spirit had not changed, in fact he was determined to allow his thoughts and views to be written and distributed to help others. Truly inspirational.

Why do so many videos made by companies fall flat? In many cases, it's because they lack the essential component of storytelling - conflict.
Karen Dietz's insight:

Oh, that statement is so true!! When Lori Silverman and I were writing Business Storytelling for Dummies we had such a hard time finding businesses who were telling effective stories. Most were mediocre. Some were terrible.


Why? As this article points out, it's often because conflict is missing. Without conflict business storytelling is like oatmeal -- very bland.


The other issues we found were that many business stories are too full of extraneous details, do not include enough of personal human elements (too much corporate speak), lack emotion, or were just pure puffery about the company.


What I like about this short post is that it focuses on conflict. And it includes a 17 minute podcast that goes into more details about this, plus the speaker shares examples.


We can all be better business storytellers by paying attention to conflict as we craft our stories.

This article made so much sense to me that I had to sit down and listen to the podcast right away.  Here's some comments that stood out for me:

  • Brands are struggling.  What's missing is conflict.

  • Need to inject conflict without damaging the brand.

  • Too many provide a false picture – everything is wonderful.

  • Have to (provide and) overcome the conflict or the listener won’t like it.

  • Conflict – get as close as possible to death.

  • Conflict – best kind of universal truth.


How to find your org/brands conflict?  Need to take a softer look at the notion of conflict (the term conflict brings up certain imagery, feelings).  Conflict is simply something to overcome.  Ask yourself - do we want to be a company who wants to overcome things?


There's also a great made-up example (Donut Corp) provided of how an organization could find it's conflict.
