Simplexity: Sensemaking, organizing and storytelling for our time

Simplexity: Sensemaking, organizing and storytelling for our time | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it

ABSTRACT: Simplexity is advanced as an umbrella term reflecting sensemaking, organizing and storytelling for our time. People in and out of organizations increasingly find themselves facing novel circumstances that are suffused with dynamic complexity. To make sense through processes of organizing, and to find a plausible answer to the question ‘what is the story?’, requires a fusion of sufficient complexity of thought with simplicity of action, which we call simplexity. This captures the notion that while sensemaking is a balance between thinking and acting, in a new world that owes less to yesterday’s stories and frames, keeping up with the times changes the balance point to clarifying through action. This allows us to see sense (making) more clearly.

With analyses of dominant stories, discursive devices, life stories, documentaries, and oral tradition, these authors aim for a deeper understanding of order, constraint, conflict, legitimation, embodiment, and distributed improvisation.

This is an academic article that I'm looking forward to delving into. The authors are talking about organizational narratives, how workers make sense of complex events through sharing stories, and are then able to take action.

But I think the authors are also talking about how we select the stories we listen to and share, who is telling the larger narratives we are listening to, what are those stories stirring up, and what can't we see? Hmmmm -- great questions!

Editorial Statement For This Collection:

Thank you for visiting this curation of articles on business storytelling. I've chosen them because they actually make a contribution to our knowledge and wisdom about stories, show us how to apply stories to growing our businesses, or give valuable how-to tips.

I weed out all the junk. And besides, who needs another post in why storytelling is important?? Where's the beef?? We want the meat!

I'm the author of the bestselling book Business Storytelling For Dummies (with Lori Silverman) and an original in the field of business storytelling. Based on my 20+ years of biz story experience, (plus a PhD in Folklore) I've written reviews of each article to share what I like best, what you can get from reading the article, or what may be missing in the article.

I'm now joined by other top business story professionals in the field who are also curating on this site: Jim Signorelli, Madelyn Blair, Lianne Picot, and Kathy Klotz-Guest.

How To Find A Topic: Click on the Filter icon above (look for the 'funnel' shape), and view the tags. Select one that interests you, or type in a keyword in the search box. All the articles with that tag or keyword will appear.

I may occasionally review an article that I think is problematic as a way to educate us all, although most I will simply pass over. If you wonder if I've seen an article that is not included here, send me a message and I'll respond.

How To Suggest An Article: If you find an article you think I'll be interested in, click the 'Suggest' button above, past the URL of the article, and I will receive it. Or write me a comment with the URL by clicking on 'Reactions' at the bottom of any article. You will see where can post a comment, which I will also receive.

I trust you find many great insights and tips here. Many thanks for visiting and enjoy the articles!

And I hope you will also visit my website for more tips and tools, and to sign up for my newsletter to receive your free "What The Heck Is A Story?!" guide. Don't forget to connect with me on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, too. See you around the storytelling 'hood.

Karen Dietz's insight:

Here is a very quick article listing the 6 C's needed for storytelling success. I like this post because it's not a laundry list of elements to include a story. Instead it's about the 6 C's of story practice -- like Commitment. Or Clarity.

Sure, you need to know how to craft a story. But underneath the crafting, these principles are at work. Combined with a well-crafted story, you will experience greater success.

Written from a marketing perspective, these principles are the same for leadership and influence.

20 skills that are hard for leaders to master & storytelling helps with 10

20 skills that are hard for leaders to master & storytelling helps with 10 | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
You have to be able to give out — and take — honest criticism.
Karen Dietz's insight:

I love articles like this because when I read them, I see just how many leadership skills storytelling helps with.

So imagine this -- by focusing on building your storytelling skills, on top of that you are building skills in at least 10 other hard-to-do areas. That's what I call being very efficient!

From the list in this post, here are the 10 skills storytelling will help you master:

  1. Listening
  2. Effective communication
  3. Managing expectations
  4. Coaching (story listening is also a coaching activity)
  5. Building up morale
  6. Recognizing great work (better to do through stories than examples)
  7. Better decision making (because you have better information via story listening)
  8. Team building
  9. Staying positive & enthusiastic

It makes sense to for leaders to pay attention to building their story skills because of the both large and small impacts they can have on people and organizations. Enjoy this post and story on!

Changes Are Coming! Update on the Just Story It Curation

Changes Are Coming! Update on the Just Story It Curation | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it

Well, as you probably have noticed. I haven't curated an article in over 4 weeks. Until today. Good grief! What the heck is going on?

Karen Dietz's insight:

After 5 years of steady curation I needed a break. And I wanted the time to think deeply about what's happening in the field of business storytelling, ways to reflect these trends, the kinds of articles to curate, and how to reorganize the curation to better serve you.

So here is where my thinking and observations have led me:

  1. I'm going to focus on the topics of transformational storytelling,
  2. storytelling for influence, and data storytelling. These are the biggest needs and trends.
  3. Transformational Storytelling covers storytelling for leadership, personal development, change, and culture.
  4. Storytelling for Influence covers presentations, customer
  5. relationships and anything to do with how to work with stories for greater influence and impact in your world.
  6. Data Storytelling sounds dry, but it's a critical need it today's data driven world. There's some great stuff out there about how to tell the story of the data, and lots of junk. Data scientists talk about story, but many make a lot of mistakes. Business storytellers sometimes say things that are going to get us into trouble with the scientists. Over the last 2 years I've been talking to both scientists and academics about the topic. I don't have all the answers, and I'm sure I'm going to make my own mistakes. But I hope to bring more clarity to this hot topic.
  7. I'm still hunting only for the best articles I can find. It's getting harder to find these. So I may end up curating only a few times a week.
  8. I'm going to check all the links on the articles in the collection to verify they are still good. I've already stumbled upon a bunch that are not. Give me at least 6 months to do that.
  9. Over the next 6 months I'm also going to re-tag all of the articles in the collection (2,000+) so everything is easier to search. I'll create a document showing you how to easily search the collection, and post that too.

I'm excited about these changes and still bringing my passion to you!  So....new directions and some cleanup work is on the horizon. LOL, this will keep me busy plenty while my business continues to grow :)) Please  continue to send me your support and ideas. I love to hear from you.

Many thanks for your patience while I've been going through this
re-adjustment/re-focusing process.

I look forward to the new upgraded Just Story It curation and hope you do to! Chat with you soon. All the best,

Karen

Self Awareness: Successful Leaders & The Kinds Of Stories They Tell

Self Awareness: Successful Leaders & The Kinds Of Stories They Tell | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
Insights from Condoleezza Rice, Terry Bradshaw, and Tom Brokaw.
Karen Dietz's insight:

Here's a terrific post from Harvard Business Review about successful leadership, self-awareness, and storytelling. Based on 10 years of research with such notables as Madeleine Albright, Tom Brokaw, Colin Powell, Terry Bradshaw, and Condoleezza Rice, the author articulates the 3 kinds of stories he hears from them. I'd have to agree -- I've found the same with my executives. The examples he shares are really helpful, too.

As a leader or future leader, how would you answer the question posed: "Can you identify the one person, event, or influence that made you who you are as a leader and a person?" Then use the 3 story categories to help you find your story.

I'd love to hear what you come up with!

Not only does this article talk about what makes a great story, but it actually discusses 3 pivotal stories every leader needs to tell -- including a personal failure story.

Rediscovering Their Founders’ Story: How Dell, HP + Apple Did It | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
And why your company should do it too.
Karen Dietz's insight:

Your Founding or Origin Story is a key element in sustaining your company culture through time. Here's a terrific post about how Dell, HP and Apple lost their way, then regained it by rediscovering their Founding Story.

A lot has been written lately about the importance of preserving the Founder's Mentality. There are some valid points made about this. The caveat is that sometimes the Founder's Mentality also remains a death grip on a company. See the book The Pursuit Of Prime for more info on that.

In any event, keeping your Founding or Origin story alive and fresh is a significant part of business storytelling. The examples shared in this post explain why.

Storytelling To Drive Recruiting: Success for 3 Unexpected Brands

Storytelling To Drive Recruiting: Success for 3 Unexpected Brands | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
Once solely the domain of marketing, storytelling is increasingly being adopted by corporate recruiting teams to help them hire more efficiently. Rather than telling candidates what it’s like to work there, companies are showing them by finding new ways to share the employee experience. These narratives are revealing a more human side of the business. They often go beyond "this is what I do here," instead illuminating “this is why I do what I do - here.”
Karen Dietz's insight:

Storytelling helps win the talent wars?! Absolutely, as this article shows. This piece focuses on recruiting, and we also know that storytelling can help keep your top talent. But let's dig into the recruiting side first.

Companies like Sodexo, Amtrak, Hyatt and Motley Fool turn to narratives to help recruit top talent. As the author of the post Lars Schmidt says, "These narratives are revealing a more human side of the business. They often go beyond “this is what I do here,” instead illuminating “this is why I do what I do – here.”

I really like the video examples share of some of these stories companies have been putting together and sharing. What's the result one firm has experienced? Schmidt documents that since shifting their focus towards storytelling, they’ve seen their time to hire decrease from six to eight months to two to three months. The result isn’t from a spike in applicants, but the quality is much higher as applicants who connect with their mission better understand that alignment because of their storytelling.

'Gotta love that! Read the article for more insights, and definitely check out the videos. You too, could win the talent wars with storytelling.

Data storytelling is a hot topic and there's lots to learn about it to be effective in business today. This is a very meaty and well-worth reading post on the critical connection between storytelling and data and creating insights/meaning.

I love how thorough the author is, asking questions like: "Are we really using storytelling techniques in our regular exchange of data-driven insights? Can data visualization amount to storytelling, in itself? What are the missing pieces, if not?"

Motivating Employees? Here’s What So Many Leaders Get So Wrong

Analyzing Deng Adut Short Film: The Neuroscience of Storytelling

Analyzing Deng Adut Short Film: The Neuroscience of Storytelling | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
Emotion and storytelling - Not a day goes by where we don’t hear about their importance in advertising. So what can the brain tell us about these two fundamental aspects of communication?
Karen Dietz's insight:

If you are into the neuroscience of storytelling, this post is for you. Peter Pynta of Neuro Insight shares his company's research on films from Cannes 2016 and which parts of stories get encoded into long term memory.

In this article they analyze a fab short film of a man called Deng Adut. The film is 1min. 30 sec. long. In real time you get to see how people's brains react to the film. Every time the graph goes above the top line, that piece of the film is getting stored into long term memory. So cool.

There are other links in the article about additional Neuro Insight research on storytelling and long term memory. The company's focus is only on applying their research to the advertising industry, but I think we can all learn from their results.

Today science provides us with proof of the power of story. This article dissects one short video and illustrates for us those scenes that evoke emotion and are stored into our long term memory and the parts we pass on.

My colleague Mark Goldman reminded me of this piece. I'd seen it earlier but not had the time to dig into it. I took the time today to do so, and am glad I did. I think you will be amazed also.

Enjoy the many ways stories can be told -- especially using different techniques and technologies. You don't need all these bells and whistles, but I bet you'll get ideas for ways you want to share some of your stories.
