What a powerful post with invaluable reminders of just what can happen when we really own our stories.

 

I see the transformation that's talked about here all the time with my clients. They are unsure of how to tell their stories. Or some stories remain unfinished and untold because no one was there to help them resolve what happened in their story.

 

But once they are able to find their voice and own their story, amazing things happen: greater confidence, presence, stature, compassion, humility, clarity of purpose, etc. This all leads to more profound results in their business. You may never tell that story to others, yet the effect is the same.

 

We all have stories that we don't own, that keep us from harvesting the results we really want. Time to get to work on those stories :)

A UX gig for a hospital turned into an unexpected insight: in the realm of emotions, digital and bricks and mortar become one.

This is a lengthy article but full of lessons and insights. So it is well worth the read.

 

The two authors start out talking about working with a hospital client to redesign their website using customer journey mapping. They thought they were collecting stories from customers -- but NOT! I keep asking myself, "What were they doing??"

 

Anyway, they finally figured out how to spark actual stories and then the project took off. Here's the gold they finally realized:

 

"When we completed our interviews at the end of the week, we had an incredibly rich number of stories to draw from—so many, in fact, that we were able to craft a digital strategy that went far beyond what the hospital website would do. (Website? We kept saying to ourselves. Who cares about the website?) We realized that in many ways, we were limiting ourselves by thinking about a website strategy, or even a digital strategy. By connecting with the emotional content of the conversations, we started to think about a customer strategy—one that would be medium-agnostic."

 

That is so powerful, in and of itself. But it doesn't stop there. The authors share the entire story of their experiences and insights on this project. It's a great read with lots of lessons we can all apply.

 

For me it demonstrated once again the power of story evoking, storytelling, connection, emotion, and empathy and creates tremendous mind shifts for companies. This article is a keeper.

Last week I was thrilled to be a guest on Ric Franzi's Critical Mass Radio Show.Ric creates premium learning experiences for CEOs. We had a great time and in 24 minutes covered these 3+ points:

 

1. Storytelling is one of the most important skills to have in business. Do not get stuck in facts and data; inspire your audience by engaging them in a relatable story or anecdote that relates to the topic at hand. Stories are what ultimately move people to action.

2. Everyone has a story to tell; the key is to tell that story effectively. Effective business storytelling is when you are able to use your story to convey a key message: what the story is about, what the point of the story is, how it connects to the business, etc.To be effective, your story should offer up an idea or suggestion about how to take action.

3. Don’t just learn how to craft stories, also learn how to listen for stories. This skill allows you to work with the dynamics of storytelling for greater influence as a business leader. Listening to stories is effective when it comes to sales, marketing, and working with employees. When you listen for stories, you gain valuable information and a deeper understanding of what’s happening around you, which results in the ability to make far better decisions.

A powerful, emotion-drenched story is at the heart of every con job.

OK -- we are mired in a Presidential election where hate mongering is the norm. It's a battle for your brain using amygdala hijacks and dark stories. What's a person to do?

 

Here Jonathan Gottschall, author of The Storytelling Animal: How Stories Make Us Human, talks more about this using the company Theranos as an example, not the election. But the principles are the same:

  1. When engaging in business storytelling, individuals and companies also need to have great defenses against cheats and manipulators who distort stories.
  2. Build a bedrock of ethical storytelling. You can "deploy story—as con artists do—as a weapon of psychological and emotional manipulation" -- or not. Choose not. Download your free storytelling ethics guide here
  3. I'll add: don't get caught up in the dark side of the hero's story (I'm the savior, I'm the lone hero, if you are not with me you are against me, I can do whatever I want because I have the power, etc.)

Storytelling battles and healing a divided America

The stories told in this US election were at a fever pitch and we all found ourselves in a battle -- not just disagreement. No matter what you political views are, this TED talk clear explains how ALL individuals can move forward. 

 

This is a profound lesson in leadership storytelling and influence.

 

Here's what I know -- being stuck in being "right", being stuck in your position, won't do a darn thing for you or anyone else except make you more right and everyone else wrong. That's where we get to feel superior, judgemental, prideful, and arrogant. It's the breeding ground of hatred and racism.

 

The personal consequences are steep: power struggles, fighting, pain, distance, and anger/hatred in relationships. Add to that feeling personally deadened, tense, unhappy, imprisoned, used, frustrated, angry, hopeless, or victimized.

 

Yes, stand up for what you believe -- but don't let yourself be a brick wall.

 

We have other choices as Jonathan Haidt lays out. There is "right" on both sides. What I particularly love is Haidt explaining the human psychological and cultural movements that brought us to today. And what to do about it. 

 

You may not be ready today to watch this -- so save it for tomorrow. But do watch it.

 

Think about how you personally want to be these next 4 years. Choose wisely.

Just like any good Disney film, data needs a narrative structure to help marketers tell the best story.
Karen Dietz's insight:

OK -- this is just dumb. Here's Disney's view of how to do data storytelling for marketers:

 

  1. The story has to have a beginning, middle, and end. Duh.
  2. Focus on understanding the audience (duh) by focusing deeply on demographics & emotional states. Useless information for most data jockeys.
  3. Have the right data. Duh, but sometimes tough to do.

 

OK -- their perspective is all about what they need to know to get audiences to watch their movies. I'm sure it works for them.

 

But for most of us wrestling with data storytelling in business, it's all about:

  1. The 3 kinds of insights you can gain from your data (indications, usefulness, actions)
  2. The process for unearthing these insights
  3. Then how to craft the story so your data can help people make better decisions that lead to making a difference

 

Sometimes these 3 steps are an iterative process that points out you've got to upgrade the data in the first place.

 

Just because Disney says something doesn't mean you should pay attention. Case in point.

Sheer talent will only yield so much problem-solving capability. It’s one reason relationships are so important for business success.

Michael Chavez, CEO of Duke Corporate Education, said leaders needn’t look further than this summer’s Brexit vote as an example of this. Increasingly complex problems will not be easily solved with a purely functional mindset. The relationships people will need to build in the British government moving forward will be far more important than arriving at the right answer when there are many pathways out of the predicament, he explained.

That’s politics, but relationships are no less important in business. Learning leaders in particular have to be strong networkers and collaborators to be effective. Chavez said networking is probably a requirement for the job. If he had to hire a chief learning officer of his own, he said he’d be willing to trade off experience working with learning management systems, for instance, for a proven track record of building relationships based on the work. “Technical expertise in learning is not sufficient — necessary but not sufficient — to drive the kind of learning solutions that organizations need.”

Here's a great article that thoroughly discusses the steps leaders need to take to create a learning organization. The first step is to become a learning leader yourself. After that there are 6 steps to shift into a learning culture (that is more productive and profitable).

 

What's storytelling got to do with it? It's the way to implement all 6 steps to get to those concrete results. Storytelling is the path. Like most articles, steps are offered, but not the "how". In this case, storytelling can be the powerful "how".

 

But it's really about story dynamics -- the give and take of conversational storytelling. That means leaders need training in how to evoke stories from others, how to listen for stories, and the best ways/timing for giving appreciations. These are covered in Chapter 5 of our book "Business Storytelling For Dummies".

 

On the flip side of the coin is learning storytelling skills to foster authenticity, empathy, transparency, and executive presence.

 

What I love about this article are the examples/case studies they provide. This moves the content from platitudes to real life experiences. 'Gotta love that.

Today’s recruiting is different. The old transactional models aren’t necessarily gone, but they’re augmented by an entirely new set of approaches and platforms borrowed from marketing. That’s right; recruiters are now marketers.

Here's a trend to consider: using storytelling to pull people into your talent pool instead of using traditional marketing techniques to push messages out to prospective candidates.

 

Actually, I think it's a mix of both. But I see less pull and more push around recruiting these days.

Different people’s brains absorb a compelling story in the roughly the same complicated pattern, using many parts of the brain, researchers found.

Lots of storytelling goes on in Podcasts, and they could be considered a narrative form in and of themselves. So here's an article about what goes on in the brain when we hear podcasts.

 

What I really like is that the podcasts used in this research was storytelling from The Moth. Which are all stories.

 

What did they find? "And so it goes, for each word and concept as it is added to the narrative flow, as the brain adds and alters layers of networks: A living internal reality takes over the brain." Multiple areas of the brain are activated along with layers and layers of neural networks. This shows us again how storytelling is a whole-brain/whole body immersive experience.

In my work with companies, CEOs, and executive teams I see these 4 mistakes being made all the time.

 

What's the one that requires the most attention? #3 -- having a non-narrative presentation. Which is what I spend the most time working on with clients. This includes not only how to structure a presentation so it is a narrative, but also figuring out the right stories to tell, how to merge data and storytelling together so it's effective, and then delivering the whole enchilada.

 

Once that's done, then problem #4 almost goes away by itself since storytelling easily cures the one-directional nature of most PowerPoints.

 

Don't make the 4 mistakes listed here, and keep working on upgrading your storytelling skills for winning presentations every single time.

As a fellow introvert and a professional speaker I found this interesting and I could relate to much of it, particularly when I was new on my public speaking journey. However, I disagree with the point Hannah makes about the energy the speaker picks up from the audience. She says " Extrovert presenters get their energy from their audience – remember they thrive on that kind of stimulation – but that’s really overwhelming for an introvert".  

Regardless of your style introvert or extravert, to be an effective speaker you must be in tune with your audience. That includes reading theri cues, watching their body language and using their energy as instant feedback.  I have never found this to be overwhelming but all part of being in the audience-centred zone that is required of me to make a meanigful connection.
