Social Media Marketing Podcast 008: In this episode Derek Halpern talks about how the power of persuasion moves people to action.
No doubt about it -- the toughest part in crafting effective business stories is the ending.
In other words -- your key message along with the words and phrases you use at the end to move people to action. That is the point of business stories, isn't it?
We all need help with this and it is not all that easy to do. So while this article and podcast doesn't have stories or storytelling in its title or text, it is undeniably about business narratives -- and how to have them work for you.
Just keep it authentic folks. It is easy to turn storytelling into manipulation. It's a fine line to walk. So pay attention to that dynamic and keep trying to do your best.
Read this post, listen to the podcast, and keep mastering how to (authentically) move people to action with your stories.

Merely knowing what a charity does isn’t always enough to convince potential donors to lend financial support. Sometimes you have to know who the charity does it for, too.
Now how creative is this?!! I love that nonprofit Aspire uses an infographic to share a story, and also creates a very effective video story about their email campaign using the infographic.
The infographic is not about the organization, but about the people it serves. Yeah! They got it right!
Enjoy this material. You too can do this! And I encourage you to do so. It is quite ingenious and it will gain you results.

A sparrow knocked over 23,000 dominoes, spoilt a world record attempt, and was shot dead. Public outrage was swift; a tribute website immediately attracted more than 24,000 hits!
For any business or nonprofit that needs to raise money, sell a cause, or enroll people in its mission, then this article clearly demonstrates why & how to focus on the people involved FIRST, not the numbers.
I love the points the author makes about giving not being rational, and that we are people not numbers. We don't relate to numbers that well in presentations, but we sure do relate to people.
Read the post and gain additional insights.

Does your organization tell compelling stories, or recite facts?
Here's a great article with great examples and great resources!
It clearly makes the case for bringing stories into marketing, sales, and fundraising plus gives some great resources to get started.
The article is written for nonprofits, but don't let that stop businesses from checking this out.
The author Linda Ziskund is a fellow curator, and Jan Gordon, another curator here pointed me to this article. Thank you ladies!

New charity website HopeMob takes a cue from Reddit by letting users vote-up the content [story] they favor. The soon-to-be launched website is the second “social giving” site founded by tech and humanitarian entrepreneur Shaun King. King said he wants HopeMob to be a platform for spotlighting untold stories and getting people help.
Now here's an ingenious use of stories that any for profit or nonprofit org can use: story voting.
This is another unique way of linking crowdsourcing with storytelling. You receive 23 story points and get to use these to vote on the stories you find the most compelling. This eventually leads to donations.
Find out what happens next by reading the article. The only question that remains for me is, are these really going to be stories?
Nevertheless, how can you use this idea? - If you are a nonprofit -- hook up with HopeMob and Shaun King. Or tailor his idea to your own organization's platform and needs.
- If you are a for profit -- collect business stories from your community, share them, give your readers story points to use for voting, and offer the winners your products/services for free (just an idea off the top of my head), which generates more stories, goodwill, prospects, and business growth.
- I'm sure you will have other ideas!
I love human ingenuity and HopeMob is a perfect example.

"The emotionally charged story recounted at the beginning Dr. Paul Zak's film—of a terminally ill two-year-old named Ben and his father—offers a simple yet remarkable case study in how the human brain responds to effective storytelling."
Want to know how a dramatic story structure affects our brain chemistry and leads us to make donations? Then watch this very engaging and informative 5 minute video!
The video explains several neuroscience research projects that were conducted (don't worry - the video is NOT boring) about the effects a short dramatic story had on people's brains and behavior.
And it explains how to structure a story to make the biggest impact. I wish all scientist could do such a great job in explaining their work and its meaning. Enjoy!

So what’s the flipside of our inertia in the face of large numbers?
We don’t want to take action unless we see large numbers of others doing so!
Take canned laughter. Can you think of any...
Needing to raise funds for your business or non-profit? Then take the point of this article to heart: make sure your other donors play a role in your story!
Ingenious. But so true. And so overlooked. This article explains all about social proof and how stories about donors/funders contributing to your cause or business is critical to build more donor momentum and bring cash in the door.
So don't forget this group of stories!
In writing fiction, there is a technique known as the ‘story spine’ that outlines the various components and flow of a typical narrative arch. Over the years, I developed the following ‘fundraising project story spine’ to help gather information needed to create these snapshot-style overviews. Love this simple, direct and very helpful article on how to structure a fundraising story! This applies to both nonprofits, and to businesses seeking to raise cash. Thanks Gregg Morris for sharing this article.

Organization communication has the power to be effective through the use of seven types of stories, all essential to success. What a great list with good explanations for each type of story. Whether you are a nonprofit or a for profit firm, use this list to develop your repertoire of stories to share with others and grow your business. Thank you fellow curator Wilton Blake for finding and sharing this article!

One of the greatest challenges for non-profits today is how to increase donations.
No matter what time of year it is, nonprofits are always faced with the challenge of raising funds. So I have several resources to share with you that I trust will help you find, craft, and share your stories better to make your fundraising more successful.
There's a PowerPoint presentation and audio recording that go together talking about the how and why stories work in fundraising, worksheets to help you develop your non-profits core stories, and an academic article talking about what nonprofit stories must have in order for them to work.
I just added (12/23) the audio file and improved PPT, along with additional resources & worksheets so go grab the latest stuff!
Enjoy & happy holidays ...
