Why Customer Anecdotes Can Tell You As Much as Metrics

Why Customer Anecdotes Can Tell You As Much as Metrics | Just Story It | Scoop.it
Why customer stories are better than metrics http://t.co/aMqlaxwX Jeannie Walters talks about the gold in off-the-cuff customer comments...

Articles like this one are rare -- hardly anyone recognizes, much less writes about, how customer stories and anecdotes gain you far more than metrics, surveys, or focus groups. Usually focus groups are crafted info-gathering exercises rather than story sharing experiences where deep meaning can be gleaned.

OK -- so maybe a lot of people in these fields don't know the best narrative research and story evoking methodologies.  If they did however, I think we would see huge improvements in customer feedback, engagement, and better/deeper/richer material.

Back to the article -- this is a quick post but with good tips for thinking about customer anecdotes as critical information, and how to start gathering them. I really like that the author suggests once you have these anecdotes in hand, it's time to take action on them. Seems obvious, but it doesn't always happen.

Enjoy this post and I hope to see more like it in the future!

Story Trumps Description Every Time -- Wow! What A Difference!

Story Trumps Description Every Time -- Wow! What A Difference! | Just Story It | Scoop.it
Show rather than tell to motivate supporters to care, then act.
Karen Dietz's insight:

Hey, this is a quick article with a very powerful point -- a before and after make-over of a marketing piece. The 'before' promo was not a story. The 'after' promo is a story. And wow - can you experience the difference!

If you need a good example of what not to do, and then what to do, this is it.

At the end of thea article are even more resources for you for telling your biz stories. They are all written for non-profits, but you will benefit just the same.

Enjoy!

Social Persuasion: How to Move People to Action | Social Media Examiner

Social Persuasion: How to Move People to Action | Social Media Examiner | Just Story It | Scoop.it
Social Media Marketing Podcast 008: In this episode Derek Halpern talks about how the power of persuasion moves people to action.

No doubt about it -- the toughest part in crafting effective business stories is the ending.

In other words -- your key message along with the words and phrases you use at the end to move people to action. That is the point of business stories, isn't it?

We all need help with this and it is not all that easy to do. So while this article and podcast doesn't have stories or storytelling in its title or text, it is undeniably about business narratives -- and how to have them work for you.

Just keep it authentic folks. It is easy to turn storytelling into manipulation. It's a fine line to walk. So pay attention to that dynamic and keep trying to do your best.

Read this post, listen to the podcast, and keep mastering how to (authentically) move people to action with your stories.

Effective Nonprofit Storytelling: Charity “Aspire” Gets Funding Through Targeted Emails Bearing Mini-Graphic Novels

Effective Nonprofit Storytelling: Charity “Aspire” Gets Funding Through Targeted Emails Bearing Mini-Graphic Novels | Just Story It | Scoop.it
Merely knowing what a charity does isn’t always enough to convince potential donors to lend financial support. Sometimes you have to know who the charity does it for, too.

Now how creative is this?!! I love that nonprofit Aspire uses an infographic to share a story, and also creates a very effective video story about their email campaign using the infographic.

The infographic is not about the organization, but about the people it serves.  Yeah! They got it right!

Enjoy this material. You too can do this! And I encourage you to do so. It is quite ingenious and it will gain you results.

The Truth About Storytelling: #1 People not Numbers (aka Emotion not Reason)

The Truth About Storytelling: #1 People not Numbers (aka Emotion not Reason) | Just Story It | Scoop.it

A sparrow knocked over 23,000 dominoes, spoilt a world record attempt, and was shot dead. Public outrage was swift; a tribute website immediately attracted more than 24,000 hits!

For any business or nonprofit that needs to raise money, sell a cause, or enroll people in its mission, then this article clearly demonstrates why & how to focus on the people involved FIRST, not the numbers.

I love the points the author makes about giving not being rational, and that we are people not numbers. We don't relate to numbers that well in presentations, but we sure do relate to people.

The Power of Storytelling - the local good

The Power of Storytelling - the local good | Just Story It | Scoop.it

Does your organization tell compelling stories, or recite facts?

Here's a great article with great examples and great resources!

It clearly makes the case for bringing stories into marketing, sales, and fundraising plus gives some great resources to get started.

The article is written for nonprofits, but don't let that stop businesses from checking this out.

The author Linda Ziskund is a fellow curator, and Jan Gordon, another curator here pointed me to this article.  Thank you ladies!

HopeMob Charity Website Is the Reddit of Giving--New Twist for Stories & $$

HopeMob Charity Website Is the Reddit of Giving--New Twist for Stories & $$ | Just Story It | Scoop.it

New charity website HopeMob takes a cue from Reddit by letting users vote-up the content [story] they favor. The soon-to-be launched website is the second “social giving” site founded by tech and humanitarian entrepreneur Shaun King. King said he wants HopeMob to be a platform for spotlighting untold stories and getting people help.

Now here's an ingenious use of stories that any for profit or nonprofit org can use: story voting.

This is another unique way of linking crowdsourcing with storytelling.  You receive 23 story points and get to use these to vote on the stories you find the most compelling.  This eventually leads to donations.

Find out what happens next by reading the article.

The only question that remains for me is, are these really going to be stories?

Nevertheless, how can you use this idea?

  1. If you are a nonprofit -- hook up with HopeMob and Shaun King. Or tailor his idea to your own organization's platform and needs.
  2. If you are a for profit -- collect business stories from your community, share them, give your readers story points to use for voting, and offer the winners your products/services for free (just an idea off the top of my head), which generates more stories, goodwill, prospects, and business growth
  3. I'm sure you will have other ideas!

I love human ingenuity and HopeMob is a perfect example.

Storytelling in Fundraising: When Your Donor Responds with These Five Simple Words, You’ve Succeeded

Storytelling in Fundraising: When Your Donor Responds with These Five Simple Words, You’ve Succeeded | Just Story It | Scoop.it
Books and articles on storytelling and narrative in fundraising are proliferating nearly as quickly as bad storytelling and narrative in fundraising (could there be a connection?). In an effort to ...
Karen Dietz's insight:

What a great post that reminds us what is most important in our business storytelling and how to achieve it -- whether it be in fundraising, sales, or marketing.

Are you following the Golden Theme? The Golden Theme for stories is: we are all the same.

If you can express the Golden Theme and do what the author Eric Foley suggests, you will have the Midas touch.

Empathy, Neurochemistry, and the Dramatic Arc: Paul Zak at the Future of StoryTelling 2012

"The emotionally charged story recounted at the beginning Dr. Paul Zak's film—of a terminally ill two-year-old named Ben and his father—offers a simple yet remarkable case study in how the human brain responds to effective storytelling."

Want to know how a dramatic story structure affects our brain chemistry and leads us to make donations? Then watch this very engaging and informative 5 minute video!

The video explains several neuroscience research projects that were conducted (don't worry - the video is NOT boring) about the effects a short dramatic story had on people's brains and behavior.

And it explains how to structure a story to make the biggest impact. I wish all scientist could do such a great job in explaining their work and its meaning. Enjoy!

How To Structure Your Fundraising Story

How To Structure Your Fundraising Story | Just Story It | Scoop.it

In writing fiction, there is a technique known as the ‘story spine’ that outlines the various components and flow of a typical narrative arch. Over the years, I developed the following ‘fundraising project story spine’ to help gather information needed to create these snapshot-style overviews.

Love this simple, direct and very helpful article on how to structure a fundraising story! This applies to both nonprofits, and to businesses seeking to raise cash.
