Hi Ken! Yep, pretty proud of that score :) Here's my advice -- write reviews and add tags. Both are invaluable and make the distinction between an 'aggregator' of information and a curator who carefully selects, reviews, comments, and catalogs the articles to create a meaningful context for readers. Sounds like a fun class! Looking forward to hearing more about it.

Embed Your Biz Stories Anywhere With Cowbird's New Function | Just Story It | Scoop.it
Cowbird has been used by the National Geographic and other outlets as a storytelling tool
Karen Dietz's insight:

Now here's a treat! The digital storytelling tool Cowbird has released new functionality.

You are now able to embed a story you create using their tool anywhere on the web -- complete with audio, sharing, handwriting, and more.

Here's the direct link to Cowbird: http://cowbird.com

Way cool! Have fun making your biz stories with Cowbird, embedding them and sharing them all around.

Karen Dietz's comment, May 24, 5:15 PM
HI Barbara and thanks for your input! When Cowbird originally came out, I too thought it would not work for business folks so have ignored it. I thought the focus on personal stories not related to business wouldn't work. I really didn't think Cowbird would be attractive to businesses because of the type of stories people were sharing plus the stories stayed on Cowbird's site. But because they've added new functionality where you can now embed your stories on your website, blog, etc. I think businesses could use it today. The best business stories are personal. I've poked around Cowbird and it seems a simple enough tool to use so I think biz folks could definitely leverage it now to their advantage. I am sure businesses will come up with creative ideas for how using this tool if they want.
Jeff Domansky's comment, May 24, 6:32 PM
Hi all, I agree Cowbird is not for most businesses yet. But imagine if your business wanted to connect with customers and encourage them to share their personal stories in a contest, to illustrate a concept or support a charity? I'm with Karen. It's not the tools, it's the creativity that counts.
Karen Dietz's comment, May 24, 7:08 PM
Yeah, great idea Jeff! Sort of like Pinterest.

Broadcast Your PowerPoint Stories To All The Devices In The Room with Electric Slide | Just Story It | Scoop.it

Electric Slide is the easiest way to wirelessly present PowerPoint slides, Office documents, PDFs and videos with your iPhone or iPad.

Your device is a remote control that works anywhere with any screen. Since viewers just need your simple URL to follow along, setup is a cinch.

You can also connect your device directly to a TV or projector via HDMI or VGA.

Via Baiba Svenca, Robin Good
Karen Dietz's insight:

Top curators Baiba Svenca and Robin Good found this cool app and I think it's important for you to know about too.

How amazing would it be when giving a presentation and sharing your biz stories via PowerPoint to have those in the room going through your material on their phones or ipads?

Or pity the person in the back of the room who can't see your slides well enough to follow along.

And the app can also still project on a screen if you want it to. So it's the best of the old and something new too.

The pricing however is steep. If you want to use the app with just one person it's free. Like we'd really need that when talking one-to-one with someone. If you want to shell our $50 for 6 months, or $80 bucks for a year, you can broadcast simultaneously to 50 people.

If you do a lot of speaking, you might want to check it out.

So this could be the coolest thing since sliced bread, or a dud -- depending on your business. Regardless, I still like the idea!

Thanks Baiba and Robin for finding this app and sharing.

Here's a terrific infographic about why SlideShare is an important story sharing tool, plus how to use it to tell your stories and grow your business.

MediaShift Idea Lab-Meograph: The Future of Storytelling is 4D (with Context) | Just Story It | Scoop.it

From Karen: Now here's another cool tech tool to help augment our business storytelling! Thanks to Siobhan-O-Flynn for finding and sharing this! Below is part of the artice but there's so much more the article talks about regarding Meograph:

Meograph, new storytelling startup that launched in July, gives online journalists and storytellers an added dimension that too often has been missing: context.

With Meograph, you can create what co-founder and CEO Misha Leybovich calls "4D storytelling" through a simple interface that lets users add images, video and text to a story they want to tell. It's free.

"The big vision is that we want to democratize the creation of interactive video storytelling," Leybovich said over coffee at ING Cafe in San Francisco earlier this month.

Today if you have a story to tell, you can publish a video to YouTube and write a blog post about it, but it starts to get funky if you want to add a lot of photos or tell how the story evolves over time. Meograph lets you create and share interactive stories that combine video with maps, a timeline and links, filling in that often missing context of where and when...

Visual aid for a story-based evaluation method

Visual aid for a story-based evaluation method | Just Story It | Scoop.it

These illustrations are computer generated maps of the overlap between how an organization describes itself (to donors) and how storytellers describe the organization or some relevant social problem.

WOW -- what a great article! Using story word maps we can now do gap analyses showing the differences (or similarities) between the stories an organization tells about itself and the stories a community, customers, or the press share about it. This is so cool!

As this article demonstrates with the organizations they analyzed, you can clearly see where the intersections a, where the gaps are, and where the missed opportunities are. The author uses visual word maps to show us the results. The fact that the results are visual is fabulous! And easy to grasp/Interpret.

Oh, I can't wait to start playing with this. It doesn't appear as if there are easy tools yet to do this, so generating the word maps will take time and effort. But I think well worth it.

Any app developers out there who can take this and run with it? I hope so.

In the meantime, start thinking about how you can apply these principles and visuals to your biz story work. I can't wait to see your results!

Dig for the gold here -- 6-Step Business Storytelling Guide

Dig for the gold here -- 6-Step Business Storytelling Guide | Just Story It | Scoop.it

Create stories that inspire your customers to step out of the status quo, take action, and invest through you into a better tomorrow. Imagine if the power of storytelling could do for your salespeople what it did for Al Gore?

Here's where to find the gold in this post: it's not about the blog text. Nor is it the in the first few slides in the SlideShare presentation.

You hit the gold when you land on the slide that shares an effective structure for business storytelling. Even better yet, the structure is explained with tips on what to do and what not to do! Yeah!

But there is more. If you continue through the slides it walks you through using the Storytelling Dice tool. Very cool!

So dig into this presentation for those gems.

Now...just a quick reminder...knowing story structure is important. It helps us organize our thoughts. But the true crafting of a story happens when you share it orally. That's when the story morphs into its most compelling form. So find partners to practice sharing your stories orally with. Never forget -- this is a critical part of the story crafting process.

Enjoy this quick piece and the tutorial on using the Storytelling Dice!

Thanks Karen. The dice game grew out of a seminar I had to do for 140 -people. I had no idea how I was going to keep them engaged. I was terrified. So, I thought how do i get them creating a story as fast as possible. Out of this terrible situation, came the card game which forced me to condense my content to 6-slides. I love the theory behind storytelling yet salespeople have a very short attention span so this seems to work.

Creating Great Images With Quotes Is Like Creating Flags For Your Fans To Wave: 3 Free Tools To Create Your Own | Just Story It | Scoop.it
Karen Dietz's insight:

Hey folks -- these tools are not specifically about storytelling, but they can be used to help you share your brand.

Quotes are very popular and many businesses use them to connect with customers and prospects. These are 3 fun tools to turn quotes into more visually appealing pieces; it's a slice of visual storytelling.

I've played with trying to make quotes more interesting on my own using the computer programs I have available now. And it takes waaaaaayyyy tooooo much time -- plus I'm not happy with the results. So I've stopped doing that. Until now!

Here are 3 ways I thought of for myself to tell the Just Story It 'story' using these tools:

  1. I like to use quotes at the end of my presentations. Now I can jazz up those quotes and make them more visually memorable.
  2. I can take storytelling quotes, use these tools to make them look really cool, then share them on my website, Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, etc. That will be fun!
  3. Share my quotes in fun ways in my email newsletters.

Who know what other ideas I'll come up with? Now I have the tools, I'll be able to play with quotes in simple and less time-consuming ways. Yeah!

SlickFlick - New Tool for Sharing Biz Stories Visually

SlickFlick - New Tool for Sharing Biz Stories Visually | Just Story It | Scoop.it
Karen Dietz's insight:

SlickFlick sent me to their site to see what I thought about their new tool for quickly and easily creating stories and then sharing them.

I checked out a few and I think it would be a terrific tool to use for sharing your business stories -- but only if you are using an iPhone, iPad, etc. Forget it if you are an Android user.

Once you have your photos, you can simply add text to them, link them together, and voila -- you have a story.

If you follow all the best ways to tell your biz stories -- an opening that grabs, showcasing your customer's challenge, the resolution, an inspiring ending that moves people to action -- then this portalbe tool could be a godsend for those with too much to do, and too little time.

The only thing I really don't like is that the stories you create stay on their site, which is a social networking site. This definitely won't work for businesses -- we need to imbed our stories on our websites, in other content we develop, and we need an interface that is professional in order to win more businesses.

Hopefully SlickFlick will offer these capabilities. Until then, this app may not work for you at all.

I am not affiliated with the company and have no relationship with them. Just thought this tool might be helpful. Let me know if you try it out and write a review in the comments below. Thanks!

streetsmartprof's comment, January 17, 8:10 AM
Some day I would love to hear some stories of your past life as a journalist and how you moved from structure to the flow of story. What I like the most of a good news article, (written by a decent journallist), is the lead. In the B2B world, "having a point" is missed far too often and replaced with fluff words, such as state of the art. In this way, even though both news and B2B content march to a different drummer, as Simon Sinek points out, start with why, the rest will follow. Yet I also firmly belief a good story needs to follow the right flow to connect with and move the listener. On re-invent, no fear, we violently agree, it is a metaphor us engineers use all the time. To re-invent implies we are using things of the past, such as a wheel...
streetsmartprof's comment, January 17, 8:12 AM
Small clarification, on start with why, I do not mean the story starts this way. As Simon points out, the why is in all things one does and helps us build what it is we are trying to achieve.
Karen Dietz's comment, January 17, 4:39 PM
Hi John/Ken -- I love these comments! I was able to move from structure to story flow by taking oral storytelling classes with some of the top folks in the story performance arena. I could myself very lucky to have had those experiences and encourage everyone I can to take some oral storytelling classes. And creating writing classes along the way sure helped too! As you say, lead-ins are so important and so many folks I coach/train struggle with how to open a story. I think my training as a journalist definitely helped there. I totally agree with your points about fluff and starting out with why, and flow. LOL on the re-invent! Great minds think alike :)

Telling Stories, Connectedly

Telling Stories, Connectedly | Just Story It | Scoop.it
Telling stories, connectedlyScreen AfricaThere are a couple of points that are worth remembering as you try to transition to a more connected form of digital storytelling. Firstly, the audience is in control.

Now here is a thoughtful article that shares with us a glimpse of the future -- specifically the technologies on the horizon that will continue to change the tools we use to share our biz stories.

The main point of this post is the increasing importance of connecting and sharing your stories across different technology media -- computer, iPads, mobile. And in various forms -- digital stories, social media snippets, online maps, and the like. To be the most effective, your biz stories need to connect and link together -- be part of a focused whole.

This does not mean you have a single narrative that is shared across platforms and through different technologies. This means you have a series of biz stories that you share. Some of these stories are best shared digitally, some in social media, others face-to-face (yes, that is still a technology available to us!!), others on our website, etc. The entire collection of your biz stories create your brand, your voice, your reputation.

This is a good "let's step back and see the big picture" article.

I very much like the author's points at the end: all of these choices can be overwhelming, and get help from others to work with the new tools. Now if I just had a few more hours each day to use more of these digital tools .... :))

A Presentation App That Forces You To Tell Better Stories | Just Story It | Scoop.it
The dangers of bad a PowerPoint presentation are manifold. It might just mean putting your audience to sleep, or running afoul of the High Council of Information Design.

Now here's something that looks promising! I'm downloading the storytelling app now to my iPad so I can start playing with it. I'll let you know how it goes.

We all need better and easier tools to create digital stories. Part of the trick is figuring out which one YOU like. So I'll keep posting different apps and technologies that appear so you can try them out and decide which one works best for you.

Have fun with this one! If you try it out, what do you think of it?

How To Capture Ideas/Stories @ Events by Doing Visual Recording on the iPad

Robin Good: Rachel Smith explains in very simple words how you can use your iPad to capture and record visually the key ideas and concepts presented during a lecture, keynote, training class or presentation.

She provides a good round-up of four relevant tools that can be used for this task, analyzing their key pros and cons as well as providing logistic and technical advice on how to best organize and setup yourself for doing visual recording on the iPad.

As similar tools will provide more ready-made icons, templates and patterns available for this kind of real-time idea-capturing, this rare and pioneering visual recording work will begin to catch up even more rapidly.

Very useful. 8/10

Karen Dietz's insight:

Now this looks really cool -- and very helpful. Capturing stories visually is a handy talent to have. And you don't need to be an artist to do it. This video walks you through how to visually capture a presentation at a conference on your iPad.

As I said, you could use it to capture stories you hear, or stories you want to tell and share, in addition to presentations.

Thanks go to fellow curator Robin Good for finding and sharing this very useful video!

Great ideas and excellent modelling from Rachel. I like her suggestion that you can practise using Youtube or TED talks and create your charts as you follow along. Amazing. Thanks for scooping, Rod!

Create your interactive story by adding multimedia, apps, graphics, text boxes. Organise and structure your storyboard in the way you want.

Well, this tool looks promising! I'm requested an invite so I can play with it. I've been disappointed lately in trying out new digital storytelling tools because they come with so little documention about how to use their tool, or have tutorials that are too simplistic (and not helpful) that I've started to shy away from wasting time trying them out.

Yet this one is intriguing because it promises built-in engagement functions. Now that's different and way cool if it works!

But I'll explore this one. If you try it out, let me know how it goes.

Thank you to fellow curator Baiba Svenca for originally scooping this tool.

What are story maps?

What are story maps? | Just Story It | Scoop.it

Story maps use the concepts and tools of geography to tell stories about the world. They combine intelligent Web maps with text, multimedia content, and intuitive user experiences to inform, educate, entertain, and inspire people about a wide variety of topics. Most story maps are designed for non-technical audiences.

Hey -- here's another cool set of tools/templates to use for innovative storytelling!

Want to tell your story using maps? For example, do you have customers across the nation or globe? You can find ways perhaps to share this story using story maps.

This site contains a Workflows & Best Practices guide for how to use and create these maps, and a white paper on Telling Stories With Maps. And then there are free templates to download to get you started!

Hmmmmm -- so interesting. Yet another fab tool for visual storytelling to add to your biz story toolkit!
