Rethinking PowerPoint: The New Wave of Presentation Tools

Rethinking PowerPoint: The New Wave of Presentation Tools | Just Story It | Scoop.it

From Karen: In a presentation rut? Looking for better tools that actually allow you to more easily create a narrative or allow for easier story sharing than PowerPoint? Then check out this article and the recommended tools!

Although tools like Powerpoint and Keynote have become the de facto standard for giving presentations, they are often limiting in their design and ease of use. And while tools like SlideShare help users share their presentations online, they often don’t give enough context to the slides.

To provide solutions to these pain points, traditional presentation tools are being completely re-thought from the cloud down to help presenters deliver a better presentation, and share it relevantly after it’s done.

Why your brain loves music [& stories]

Why your brain loves music [& stories] | Just Story It | Scoop.it
New neuroscience study sets out to explain why in some respects music offers the same sort of pleasure as a really good thriller.
Karen Dietz's insight:

I love reading about topics related to storytelling and music is definitely one of those.

So here is a wonderful article about how our brains and bodies interact with music. And what is going on in the brain regarding music is almost identical to storytelling!

I like how the article talks about being overwhelmed by a story (that's happened to me), and talks about the notions of 'pleasant surprise' along with 'thwarted expectation'.

And the final point is the kicker: some of the recent studies are too simplistic. As the author Ivan Hewett says, "What we need is a proper dialogue between musicians and scientists; then we might learn something really profound."

I agree. Too often the studies are simply validating what we already know to be true. This is a necessary step in the research around both music and storytelling. But I think both Hewett and myself are looking for meatier stuff that delivers that 'pleasant surprise' and more.

Karen Dietz's insight:

If you haven't seen this 6 min. video before about how the brain changes when listening to a story, then go watch it now. It's a terrific training tool. The article by Lou Hoffman and the video also talk about the chemicals released in the brain. Thanks Lou!

The Science of Storytelling: Why Telling a Story is the Most Powerful Way to Activate Our Brains

The Science of Storytelling: Why Telling a Story is the Most Powerful Way to Activate Our Brains | Just Story It | Scoop.it
A good story can make or break a presentation, article, or conversation. But why is that? When Buffer co-founder Leo Widrich started to market his product through stories instead of benefits and bullet points, sign-ups went through the roof.
Karen Dietz's insight:

Hey folks -- what a great article that talk about how dramatically the brain changes when it is engage with a story. It is terrific information for when you want to explain the power of storytelling and why it works so powerfully in communication.

Tips for working with stories include exchange giving suggestions for telling stories with others; how to write more persuasively using stories; and a reminder to boil down the complex into the simple via stories.

This post is a nice piece and will come in handy -- either to explain storytelling or to stimulate ideas for how to work with stories in your marketing. Keep it around!

Thanks go to my friend and story colleague Patti Christiansen for finding this article and sending it to me!

Empathy, Neurochemistry, and the Dramatic Arc: Paul Zak at the Future of StoryTelling 2012

"The emotionally charged story recounted at the beginning Dr. Paul Zak's film—of a terminally ill two-year-old named Ben and his father—offers a simple yet remarkable case study in how the human brain responds to effective storytelling."

Want to know how a dramatic story structure affects our brain chemistry and leads us to make donations? Then watch this very engaging and informative 5 minute video!

The video explains several neuroscience research projects that were conducted (don't worry - the video is NOT boring) about the effects a short dramatic story had on people's brains and behavior.

And it explains how to structure a story to make the biggest impact. I wish all scientist could do such a great job in explaining their work and its meaning. Enjoy!

Your Brain Can Feel Metaphors

Your Brain Can Feel Metaphors | Just Story It | Scoop.it

Metaphors enrich language; just think, would you rather listen to a singer with a "silky voice" or just a "pleasant voice"? In evoking the smooth feeling of silk, the phrase associates a physical texture with something that has none.

Here's a very quick article with a very important message: metaphors that we use in our biz stories actually help listeners feel what we are sharing about.

Wow! This goes hand-in-hand with a recent article I scooped on change that talks about when listeners hear stories they are not only seeing pictures, they are simulating the experience.

This article also talks about the neuroscience of a powerful storytelling device: metaphor.

Enjoy!

Science & Stories: what every biz storyteller needs to know

Science & Stories: what every biz storyteller needs to know | Just Story It | Scoop.it
The thesis of this study – that storytelling skills gave an evolutionary advantage to our early ancestors – is an original perspective on human development, and in probing how this inheritance affects our modern lives, I draw on ...
Karen Dietz's insight:

In this latest research -- available as a downloadable e-book from the BiteSize science series -- we learn how stories were essential to our evolution. And still are.

And that science, scientists, and storytelling are intimately linked. Love that. And who knew there is a new discipline -- the psychology of narrative -- that's investigating all of that?

Read this article and e-book through the lense of business. Businesses evolve. Learning more about how stories support evolution -- or not -- would be wise to know about. Turns out metaphor is key.

The e-book is $2.99 on Amazon and I am adding it to my library (I have no affiliation with the author or publisher). And then make sure I use this material when working with physicians, engineers, and other science types.

I hope you enjoy this latest research. It sounds like it is written in plain language.

Research—You’re Doing It Wrong. How Uncovering The Unconscious Is Key To Creativity & Effective Storytelling

Research—You’re Doing It Wrong. How Uncovering The Unconscious Is Key To Creativity & Effective Storytelling | Just Story It | Scoop.it
Businesses invest billions of dollars annually in market research studies developing and testing new ideas by asking consumers questions they simply can’t answer.
Karen Dietz's insight:

Here is a well-written article on cognitive research and its link to behavior change and storytelling.

Whether in business, or as a nonprofit, often we share our stories in order to change behavior. At the lowest level, this is 'buy my stuff.' At the highest level this is about creating greater satisfaction, awareness, and positive social change.

This article explains the 7 steps cognitive research has determined influence our behavior. And these are strikingly similar to storytelling:

1) Interrupt the Pattern -- start with the everyday but then something happens and we are in a different place/situation

2) Create Comfort -- add familiary elements

3) Lead the Imagination -- have a plot plus use visual language

4) Shift the Feeling -- from one state to another, using turning points

5) Satisfy the Critical Mind -- include data

6) Change the Associations -- from undesirable to desirable

7) Take Action -- what do you want people to do?

The author, Douglas Van Praet, also shares examples with us to illustrate his points.

It's an easy yet meaty read and I think you will get a lot out of it.

"So, if people are more likely to respond to a story, why do salespeople try to persuade customers with facts and figures?"

Hey folks -- if you want a quick and easy-to-digest post (and free download) of the neuroscience of storytelling, then go grab this article and mini e-book.

Author Michael Harris has put all the salient material together for us. It's perfect for trainings and workshops.

There are times when you audience does want facts. Just know that the order goes story first, facts second. That way you'll avoid endless debates, as Michael also points out.

If you want to dig into this topic more deeply, then read Kendall Haven's book Story Proof for all of the specific studies on storytelling and the brain.

Enjoy the rest of your day!
