The Back Story: How the Star-Spangled Lyrics Were Born

The Back Story: How the Star-Spangled Lyrics Were Born | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
What was a lawyer like Francis Scott Key—who wrote the words to America's national anthem—doing watching a battle anyway?
Karen Dietz's insight:

In the US, most of us know that Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics to our national anthem, the Star Spangled Banner, while watching the shelling of Ft. McHenry.

But did you know how Key got to be there in the first place? It's quite a story!

Enjoy and have a happy 4th of July holiday everyone!

A Story of Santa: Celebrating the Universal Spirit of Giving & Generosity

A Story of Santa: Celebrating the Universal Spirit of Giving & Generosity | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
"Giving is itself a kind of thank offering."
Karen Dietz's insight:

It's Christmas Eve and Happy Holidays everyone!

To celebrate, here's a delightful article on the history of Santa by Maria Popova. Maria digs into the delightful little book that famed anthropologist Margaret Mead and her partner Rhoda Metraux put together for children in 1964. It's a telephone interview with Santa!

Read the wonderful excerpts Maria has put together, and then follow the link to the book directly.

What I love about this piece is Mead's (and Santa's) emphasis on the joys of giving, along with the masterful ways legend, folklore, history, custom, and tradition are all woven together. There's a message for everyone here, regardless of religion or beliefs.

Enjoy this post and enjoy this season of giving.

A nice addition to Christmas lore from business consultant Karen Dietz.  The focus of this article is an analysis of a book by anthropologist Margaret Mead and her partner Rhoda Metraux, who put together a delightful book for children in 1964.  The book features a fictional telephone interview with Santa. A thoroughly delightful read.  The work by Mead and Metraux emphasizes the joy of giving and the gift of generosity--something sorely needed in our world.  Aloha, Russ.

Karen Dietz's insight:

I was shopping yesterday for a dining room table cover and an orange for the cranberry sauce that I forgot earlier in the week. All in preparation for our special Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow with family.

But of course, every story was playing Christmas music, hawking Christmas decorations, and urging us to buy buy buy. We are swamped with holiday catalogs plus ads for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

But the consumerism and materialism can be overwhelming and sometimes it's hard to focus on what's really important.

So instead of curating a piece about some new holiday ad that tells a story so we will buy that product, I've been searching for something different that connects us again to this season of gratitude.

And I found it! Enjoy the story in this post that helps us reframe money, materialism, and the experience of everyday grace.

Halloween Stories: How Pumpkins Became "Jack O' Lanterns" + Last Minute Costume Ideas | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
The name “Jack O’ Lantern” was originally one of the numerous names given to ignis fatuus (Medieval Latin for “foolish fire”), another of which is “Will O’ the Wisps”, basically the odd light that can occasionally be seen over marshes, swamps, and the like. “Jack O’ Lantern” first popped up being used this way around the mid-17th century in East Anglia, UK and spread from there through parts of England, Ireland, and Scotland.
Karen Dietz's insight:

It's Halloween tomorrow and time for some fun! I've got a list here of cool posts I've found to help us celebrate this favorite holiday.

First up is the story about how carved pumpkins became known as 'Jack o'lanterns'. It's based on an Irish folktale. Ignore the author's side comments -- hey, it's a folktale, OK? -- and enjoy Jack's creative solutions and eventual comeuppance.

Next, wander over to the article "10 Crazy Facts About Pumpkins" that had me saying, "Who knew?!" http://time.com/3544386/10-crazy-facts-about-pumpkins/

There's Still Time For An Awesome Costume

Right on! http://mashable.com/2014/10/18/duct-tape-costumes/?utm_reader=feedly

Happy Halloween, everyone!

Richard Spencer's curator insight, October 31, 2014 9:23 AM

An  interesting  story  -   originating  from  folk  lore  about  a  thief  called  Jack  who  was  chased  by  the  villagers   when  he was  stopped  in  in  his  tracks  by  Satan.

Story  taken  from  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack-o%27-lantern

Jack was getting chased by some villagers from whom he had stolen, when he met Satan, who claimed it was time for him to die. However, the thief stalled his death by tempting Satan with a chance to bedevil the church-going villagers chasing him. Jack told Satan to turn into a coin with which he would pay for the stolen goods (Satan could take on any shape he wanted); later, when the coin (Satan) disappeared, the Christian villagers would fight over who had stolen it. The Devil agreed to this plan. He turned himself into a silver coin and jumped into Jack's wallet, only to find himself next to a cross Jack had also picked up in the village. Jack had closed the wallet tight, and the cross stripped the Devil of his powers; and so he was trapped.

In both folktales, Jack only lets Satan go when he agrees never to take his soul. After a while the thief died, as all living things do. Of course, his life had been too sinful for Jack to go to heaven; however, Satan had promised not to take his soul, and so he was barred from hell as well. Jack now had nowhere to go. He asked how he would see where to go, as he had no light, and Satan mockingly tossed him an ember from the flames of Hades, that would never burn out. Jack carved out one of his turnips (which were his favorite food), put the ember inside it, and began endlessly wandering the Earth for a resting place. He became known as "Jack of the Lantern", or Jack-o'-lantern.
