Empathy: What This Means For Advocacy

Empathy: What This Means For Advocacy | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
Firesteel is your platform for social change, led by Washington YWCAs. A community of shared knowledge with a commitment to end homelessness in Washington State, we believe we can make a difference. Are you ready to add your voice?
Karen Dietz's insight:

I recently curated another article on empathy from this organization, Firesteel, and now is the 3rd post in the series. This article focuses on what empathy in storytelling actually looks like when advocating for a cause, or people. If you are a captain in business, read this through the lense of launching and sustaining change in your org or the marketplace.

The author, Perry Firth, takes a look at the best practices for advocacy storytelling, goes through several examples of what works and why, and then offers links to other examples to explore.

In the discussions of each, he makes fabulous points about how to do advocacy storytelling right, how to avoid psychic numbing, and ways to move forward when your listeners cannot relate to the group being advocated for.

It doesn't matter if you are in a for-profit business or a nonprofit -- there are lessons to be learned here about influence, empathy, and change that can benefit us all.

Mixing Long-Term Goals w/ Short Term Wins in Your Storytelling For Success

Mixing Long-Term Goals w/ Short Term Wins in Your Storytelling For Success | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
Share your victories, but don't focus on them so much that your audience loses the big picture.
Karen Dietz's insight:

Here's a quick nugget of advice on business storytelling for the weekend. When your storytelling has a big job to do -- like change public views on a topic -- craft lots of stories that move you toward your long term goal.

In other words, forget the notion of a big all-encompassing 'brand story' and go for stories creating lots of small wins.

As I work more and more with advocacy storytelling, this makes perfect sense to me. And it's a big difference from how many companies approach storytelling.

So read this article and add the tips made here to your toolkit.

One Person's Story Power: The Arithmetic of Compassion

One Person's Story Power: The Arithmetic of Compassion | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
Why do we struggle to sympathize with large numbers of victims?
Karen Dietz's insight:

Here's a great article from the New York Times by Paul and Scott Slovic that has implications for both business and nonprofit storytelling.

The article talks about the latest research on compassion fatigue and why a story about the plight of a single person works. It's fascinating stuff.

For nonprofits, the implications are clear as the article points out. This applies to both advocacy and fundraising.

For businesses, this means that if you want to enroll people in your vision or social cause, it happens with one individual's story at a time. There are no shortcuts here.

This is a short, but powerful piece. If you want your stories to motivate others, if you want your stories to change the world, read this now.

Advocacy, Change and Narrative: How Stories Can Create Impact

Advocacy, Change and Narrative: How Stories Can Create Impact | Just Story It! Biz Storytelling | Scoop.it
Karen Dietz's insight:

This article is not written for most mainstream businesses -- yet is has a powerful message about the role of stories in battling stereotypes,  opening minds, and creating change. So I think there are direct business applications.

The author shares how storytelling from constituents can have a tremendous positive impact on the public policies related to them. This is the same dynamic companies wrestle with internally with shift attitudes and opinions, and has relevance when working with customers.

If the insights shared here work for combating poverty and other deeply entrenched social problems, they will work for your business.

If you as a leader or entrepreneur have decisions to make affecting others, follow the storytelling lessons here. You will be glad you did.
