Benefits of Online, Face-to-Face Professional Development Similar, Study Finds

Benefits of Online, Face-to-Face Professional Development Similar, Study Finds | Just Learning | Scoop.it

Researchers found similar effects on student learning and teacher behavior regardless of whether teachers took part in online or face-to-face professional development.

Fishman said that administrators and policymakers should see the findings as further evidence that online teacher professional development, while no silver bullet, can be a viable alternative to the traditional model.

"There's some hesitation on the part of teachers who think that online [professional development] is somehow less valuable to them because of a lack of personal connection," Fishman said.

"I think this study may make them a little more optimistic."

Teachers are really ready for this.   Receiving some of your PD via online means is less expensive and equalizes the participants.  For many teachers this what they have been waiting for.  I say let's grab a 'holt' of this and go.

Transfer of Learning

Transfer of learning occurs when learning in one context enhances (positive transfer) or undermines (negative transfer) a related performance in another context. Transfer includes near transfer (to closely related contexts and performances) and far transfer (to rather different contexts and performances). Transfer is crucial to education, which generally aspires to impact on contexts quite different from the context of learning. Research on transfer argues that very often transfer does not occur, especially ``far'' transfer. However, sometimes far transfer does occur. Findings from various sources suggest that transfer happens by way of two rather different mechanisms. Reflexive or low road transfer involves the triggering of well-practiced routines by stimulus conditions similar to those in the learning context. Mindful or high road transfer involves deliberate effortful abstraction and a search for connections. Conventional educational practices often fail to establish the conditions either for reflexive or mindful transfer. However, education can be designed to honor these conditions and achieve transfer.

Thank you John Evans for sharing this infographic on creating QR code scavenger hunts via iPads on your scoop.it/t/ipads-in-education page.

Catherine Smyth's curator insight, December 12, 2013 6:38 PM

There are many affordances for QR codes in history. Pose an historical inquiry question and get students to gather clues (evidence) using primary sources embedded with a QR code at a museum, local community, school etc. Or, get primary students to create their own QR codes for artefacts. This could engage students in historical inquiry and the analysis and use of primary and secondary sources.

I became a fan of Google Reader, which collected blog posts and other publications to RSS in one easy-to-access place. Then Google discarded this service — one that had a very loyal user base. Google has a history of doing this to features that don’t meet its needs anymore. If I’m making the switch to Classroom, I’d like to know that Google has committed to it.
