Jr. Broadcaster Joshua Williams & Founder of Joshua's Heart Foundation "Stopping Hunger Has No Age Limits" | Junior Broadcasters | Scoop.it

November 26th, 2012

Joshua Williams

Right around this time, just a little more than two years ago, I was doing exactly what I hope a lot of young people are doing right now… applying for the Stephen J Brady STOP Hunger Scholarship.

Along with four other students, I was lucky enough to be selected as one of its national scholarship recipients for the volunteer work that I do to fight hunger. That recognition included a $5,000 grant for my education and a great trip to Washington, DC for me and two other guests! That was all great, but it wasn’t just about what I would get out of it. It was really about what I would be able to give… or actually, continue to give.

Being recognized as a Stephen J. Brady STOP Hunger Scholarship recipient also meant a $5,000 grant from Sodexo Foundation to my own non-profit, Joshua’s Heart Foundation. That funding helped my organization assist a lot more people and it has grown larger since I received the scholarship. Joshua’s Heart has a mission to “Stomp Out Hunger” by providing basic necessities, such as food and other grocery products, and by effectively engaging and educating communities.

Joshua Williams working the donations area of his non-profit. To learn more about the scholarship, click on the photograph.
The amount of food that we have given out from the time I received the grant until now has nearly doubled. It was 250,000 lbs. before the grant, compared to the 400,000 lbs. we now distribute. We also had a large increase in volunteers since the recognition, especially with youth.

The added visibility from being named a STOP Hunger scholar also led to a number of other opportunities. In 2011 Walmart awarded Joshua’s Heart a grant of $20,000 to start our backpack program through its 12 Days of Giving campaign. In addition we are now partners with Whole Foods Markets, which sponsors our cooking demonstration that teaches families how to eat a healthy yet delicious meal. Most recently, I was honored to be presented with the Champions of Change award by the White House.

I am proud to say I was a Stephen J. Brady STOP Hunger Scholar in 2010. The award is by far one of my favorite and most helpful recognitions presented to Joshua’s Heart. It raised great awareness about our work and it proves that you’re never too young to make a difference. I hope these words inspire another young person to apply, just like I did. It could lead to some amazing opportunities for you and the communities you serve.

Joshua Williams is a 2010 Stephen J. Brady STOP Hunger Scholarship recipient and the founder of Joshua’s Heart Foundation. He also is a middle school student at Ransom Everglades School in Miami, Florida.

JOSHUA WILLIAMS, Founder of Joshua's Heart Foundation

This middle schooler’s foundation has donated 200 tons of food— and he’s just getting started.

When Joshua Williams was 5 years old, his grandmother gave him $20 to spend on whatever he wanted. “My mom and I were in the car on the way to church, and I was thinking about all the fun things I could buy,” he says. But then, while waiting at a red light, he looked out the window and saw a homeless man begging for money. Joshua leaned forward and said he wanted to give the man the $20 so he could get a meal. “I suggested that we go buy the man some food,” says his mom, Claudia McLean. “But Joshua pointed out, ‘What if he doesn’t like what we get him?’

From that moment on, he was pestering me about how we could help more people.” Soon, the family began cooking meals every Saturday to distribute to the homeless. Still, says Joshua, 11, “we only had so much food, and I knew people were still hungry.” In 2007, Joshua and his mom established Joshua’s Heart Foundation (joshuasheart.org), which has since given away 400,000 pounds of food through a variety of initiatives. But the foundation’s backpack program, which discreetly issues food-filled packs to needy school children before weekends, is closest to the seventh grader’s heart.

“When kids don’t have to worry whether they’ll have dinner that night, they can concentrate better, do better in school,” he says. The program benefits 50 kids in two Miami- area schools, but Joshua hopes to expand it via corporate donations (Walmart has given $20,000). The foundation now has 700 volunteers, plus a Junior Advisory Board over which he presides.

This summer, Joshua was the youngest-ever recipient of the White House’s “Champions of Change” award, honoring Americans who do extraordinary things for their communities. “When I look at the faces of the people we’re helping and see how happy they are, that’s my favorite moment,” he says.

How KiDz HuB Helped Jaime To 'Branch Out'

How KiDz HuB Helped Jaime To 'Branch Out' | Junior Broadcasters | Scoop.it

The number of kids throughout the world receiving poor education is astounding. Equally as astounding is the number of kids who don’t do anything because they are too afraid.

I used to be one of those kids. Never wanting to leave the house or join any school activities. It took me years to actually and fully become interested in doing something. It wasn’t until my junior year of high school that I found something that sparked my interest. Joining KiDz HuB Media Network really broke me out of my shell.

KiDz HuB Media Network is a non profit international online radio network that helps give kids a voice and improve on their learning skills. Kids are trained to become Junior Broadcasters’. Those who come into this position create shows that help empower and encourage kids to step up in their communities. We participate in events that empower kids and set good examples for a well productive future.

For the past two years, I have grown and expanded my confidence level and enthusiasm. For example, I had the opportunity to interview the mayor of Old Bridge. He was holding a town meeting about the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. When he opened up to the floor for questions, I raised my hand immediately. I introduced myself and said I was with the media and asked my question. Although he barely answered the question, I was proud of myself that I had enough courage to ask the question. I had enough courage to do this because I started working with KiDz HuB.

It surprised me because it wasn’t something I was looking for. I was just tagging along with my sister’s Girl Scout troop. They were going to somewhere to earn their media badges. When I got there, the problem was that none of the girls could remember their lines. So I took action. I borrowed someone’s laptop and set it up like a teleprompter. I stood behind the cameras and displayed the lines to the girls. At the end of the filming, the organizer asked me to join KiDz HuB as their technical producer because of my quick thinking as ability to use a computer.

Technical producer is one of my many titles. In this position, I learn how to use the broadcasting radio equipment and train others to use it as well. As art/logo designer, my job is to create logos for the Junior Broadcaster’s shows, posters and create the extras we like to give out as gifts. As administrative assistant, I keep everything organized. I take notes, keep track of all the sponsors and kids joining, and most importantly, keep the founder of the program focused and one time. But, the title I’ve had the longest is Junior Broadcaster. I have my own show that plays on the station at the top and bottom of every hour. My show is called “Jaime’s Brainbusters” and it is a trivia show were I ask questions and give the answers later on giving the listeners a chance to answer me. This is a fun way for me and my listeners to learn something new.

Each of these jobs will help me in the future. Being art/ logo designer with help me get experience in my potential career, Computer Graphics, as well as build my portfolio of work I have done. The title of administrative assistant proves that I work well in a leadership position. As a leader now, I can use these skills later on for working on large projects or with people who need to learn on how to keep themselves organized and in control of themselves. As Technical Producer, the skills I am learning can help at any point in my life because technology is always advancing and you can never know where it will come in handy.

My experience as a Junior Broadcaster will help me the most because it has already changed me for the better. I am no longer shy and timid around new experiences and just jump right in. I have developed great research skills from researching facts for my show. This is a good skill for the future because it all information should be thoroughly researched and accurate. Finally, I can and will help other children break out of their shells. I can tell them my story and show them how a little bravery can go a long way. Therefore, I will be improving their lives and as a result, also improving mine.

"Can you imagine what it would be like to operate your own radio station? Very soon, 5 schools across Jamaica will.”

According to the Jamaican Observer, primary and junior high school students from five pilot schools will be trained to operate their own school radio station. The stations will be established for the creation and dissemination of media content.

Orlando Dillon, KiDz HuB Media Network’s founder, in his official endorsement at the meeting of the Board of Directors on Thursday, November 8, 2012., stated that this is. "...very forward-thinking and an extremely important project. “ He said that the Media Literacy Project will form the foundation for the Jamaican educational system's understanding of media and how it applies to life skills and learning, in the 21st century. As a result, educators and facilitators of learning will now have a better grasp of how to incorporate new and existing technology as a part of pedagogy. Kidz HuB Endorses Pakistan's Widely Celebrated ICDB-By Kcirillo

Kidz HuB Endorses Pakistan's Widely Celebrated ICDB-By Kcirillo | Junior Broadcasters | Scoop.it

Mishal is on air at a radio station during International Children's Day of Broadcasting (ICDB).
This March, UNICEF Pakistan organized a country-wide celebration of the ICDB by getting multiple broadcasters on board to allow children not only to be directly involved in radio and television programming, production and presentation, but to give voice to their hopes and dreams and share experiences with their peers.

The ICDB theme for 2012 in Pakistan was ‘Every Child in School’. This theme is at the heart of a strong campaign that UNICEF PCO has launched to get all out-of-school children enrolled. and encouraged them to brand the day and produce special programmes with children.

UNICEF approached 12 major broadcasters, visited their offices and shared some key messages and statistical information on the state of education in Pakistan, especially, about children out of school – 25 million. All 12 broadcasters responded to their request and produced special programmes for the ICDB focusing on the theme.

Participating broadcasters included Pakistan Television (PTV Home/World), Geo TV, Dawn News, Express News, Indus TV, Aaj TV, Samaa TV, Dunya TV, Radio Pakistan, FM 89, FM 100, FM 107 and FM 91.

Geo TV featured a special news bulletin two times during the day with children as anchors, followed by a special news report by children. These packages and stories primarily focused on children reporting from all over Pakistan, including all major Urban and Rural centres. The children reported from their schools and neighbourhoods, with a focus on education and schools.

Radio FM 91 called it a “Day Dedicated to the Future” and aired continuous hours of ICDB-related programming, including an interview with UNICEF’s Communication Officer Sami Malik and Silver Bullet with RJ Beenish.

Samaa TV aired a special news bulletin three times over the course of the day on ‘Every Child in School,’ presented by children as news anchors. The Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation produced and aired a special broadcast on “Every Child in School” that featured an overall situational analysis of the state of education in Pakistan and views by people.

Dawn TV aired a newscast presented by children, which also included 14 brief packages (2 to 3 minutes) recorded in various cities with children. On Express News, Taleem – Har bache ka aaeeni haq, a special ICDB in-studio programme, featured participants including a female teacher running a shelter-less school, a public school teacher and children. Indus TV presented an in-studio live programme called Children’s Special with participation from children from various schools in Karachi and children living on streets.

Pakistan Television aired Ghar ki Baat – ICDB special: A discussion on Every Child in School and Aaj TV, FM 101 and FM 89 all had special ICDB programmes for the day.
