Cheryl Toh's insight:

From this article, I can see that the fight lasted for more than a hundred years and many innocent lives were lost in the process. I think that all of these cruelties will not happen if the people’s mind-sets are changed. Just because people feel that they are from different races and thus are different from others, they start to compete and fight against each other. It would be good if humans can live without fighting over each other’s races one day. I wonder who started all these and who changed the people's mindset. Wouldn't it be good if no one started it and everyone continued to live in harmony?

In this article, I can see the disastrous outcomes of not being a multi racial country like singapore. If the sri lankan government had not favoured one race over anothe, none of this would have happened. Young teenager would not have to join dangerous groups to fight for their freedom and everything would have been fine. This article has taught me the importance of being a fair and just country where everyone is given an equal opportunities, this article has also taught me the importance of peace and harmony as an internal conflict can cause the whole nation to be affected in a negative way.
Pua Peng Guan's curator insight, July 2, 2013 10:19 AM

This is my insight using See-Think-Wonder thinking routine. From this article, I can see that the conflict between the Sinhalese and the Tamils in Sri Lanka has not been resolved even after 100 years which is suprising. Over this long period, many innocent lives have been lost, which is heartbreaking. I think that this conflict between the two races can be resolved as long as they are willing to understand each other more and accept one another. I wonder what was the start of all these arguements and why it cannot be solved even after so many years, and how serious is the problem that is worth the sacrifice of so many innocent people.

Darren Cheng's curator insight, July 10, 10:28 AM

After reading this article, I had learnt that the ethnic conflict between the Tamils and Sinhalese in Sri Lanka dates back to over 100 years ago. Because of this rivalry, many innocent lives were killed. It all started of because of unfair treatment to the Tamils. This conflict had caused the economy in Sri Lanka to slow down and affect the lives of the people, hence they have to go through all those difficult situations. I strongly believe that people should have the mindset of equality and fairness. There should be no discrimination or prejudice to towards one another. This to ensure the sustainability of peace and harmony and people will learn to accept one another differences and learn from them. This could also help by understanding and accepting more rather than hating as life is too short to hate. At times, i wonder who started all these hating, discrimination and prejudice.

Focusing On Possibilities In Times Of Difficulty

Focusing On Possibilities In Times Of Difficulty | June holiday assignment | Scoop.it
by: H. James Williams Life is full of uncertainties. Day-to-day, like the weather, fate or circumstances present situations and challenges beyond anyone’s immediate control. Nonetheless, it remains...

Cheryl Toh's insight:

From this article, I can see that there are many ways we can view problems and they are many ways for us to solve them. Difficulties can be handled in a right way or a wrong way. The right way can bring about unanticipated opportunity and prosperity. The wrong way generally brings about more difficulties, chaos and increased despair. The right way will require good and purposeful actions, unflinching courage, tenacity, a determined heart and a winning spirit. The wrong way usually involves the impetuousness of a foolish heart and little to no mindful thought. I think that this article is very useful as it gives us many different ways we should view difficulities. They mindset you give will result in the result you will get at the end of the day. I wonder who will actually think so much when they face problems. Will they still think of all this ways to view them when they are already panicing?

Sean Tay's curator insight, July 2, 2013 3:46 AM

From this article, i can see that staying focused during times of difficulty is a difficult and ardious task, however, if one manages to do so, he will be rewarded. Ones decision could lead to either good or bad. By doing do, they would at least be sure of themselves. I think that if we have tne correct mindset and the will to do so, i am certain that by thinking that you can do it, you will be able to. Sometimes, i wonder to myself, why do some people think negatively when not all hopes were lost.

Seamus Ong's curator insight, July 4, 2013 3:51 AM

This is my insight using the see-think-wonder routine. In the article, we read how life is full of uncertainties and how to handle difficulties the right way and clarify ambitions. From this we can see that the factors leading to realisation of reaching the possibilities are clarity and determination. these qualities, together with good insight would allow one to think ahead and thus realise that the possiblities are not too far away from reach. This article makes me think that it is possible for people or scientists, to discover or invent new things as long as they realise that the possiblities are not too far from their reach, The article also makes me wonder how the realisation of reaching the possibillities could help normal students such as my self.

Evelynkoh's curator insight, July 5, 2013 11:45 AM

There's always many different point of views to everything which is happening around us. Whether how good or bad it is depends on how we see it. Difficulties are like in the package to everything which happens around us and it solely depends on us on whether we settle it correctly or wrongly. We can also tell that everything that seem easy may also be difficult at times. For example , its difficult to concentrate on things when we have to therefore its by how you respond to it matters. You may just chose the easier way out that is to give in to the temptation and to give up or to resist the countless temptations which is being thrown at you to continue what you want to do and must do though its harder and tougher but the thing is , the more you suffer today , the more result you'll receive in the end.

OpenIDEO - How might we inspire and enable communities to take more initiative in making their local environments better?

OpenIDEO - How might we inspire and enable communities to take more initiative in making their local environments better? | June holiday assignment | Scoop.it

Singapore started out as a small fishing village but, rather quickly, turned into a sprawling metropolis. Like many other countries, it has reached a highly developed state. Public agencies such as Singapore's National Environment Agency would like to envision how to rejuvenate our local environments to inspire and enable communities to make our living environments better – and are eager to collaborate with the global community to explore solutions which resonate in Singapore and across the world.

Cheryl Toh's insight:

I can see that Singapore is trying hard to inspire and enable communities to make our living environments better and they are also eager to collaborate with teh global communitiy to explore solutions which resonate in Singapore and across the world. I think that is it very good that everyone is trying their best to solve problems. We all face the same problems as other countries and we have to think of ways to solve it. I wonder how we will work with other countries and solve problems successfully next time.

Nathaniel Loreno Arendayen's curator insight, July 2, 2013 12:17 PM

Using the 'see-think-wonder' I can see that Singapore is enthusiastic about collaboration with other countries. This is because a country cannot survive on it's own especially a country as small as Singapore. But even though Singapore is a small country it is recognised globally. I think that this is a great opportunity to foster good ties with other countries especially those in Asia as more problems are arising regionally and globally. By working together with other countries, global or regional crisis can be averted, like the recent Haze issue. Working together can prove to be effective and may stop major issues from happening ahead of time. I wonder what other ways can we foster good relationships with other countries and how we can solve the problems we face.

Wu Weiyang's curator insight, July 3, 2013 11:30 AM

I see that Singapore has reached the status of a developed country and we are still trying to further improve ourselves. I think that collaborating with the global community will allow Singapore to be heard and enable ourselves to reach greater heights with the help of other countries' opinions. I wonder if there are other ways to make our living environments better other than collaborating with the global community.

Teoh Jun Fang's curator insight, July 5, 2013 10:27 AM

(See-Think-Wonder) From this article, I can see that Singapore has developed very well and quickly over the years. Singapore started out small but now, it is a bustling city with good economy. Now that the population is growing, we need to have a good environment, connection with neighbouring countries, etc for the future generations. I think that working with the other countries is the best solution since Singapore is such a small country that does not have much natural resources. I wonder what will happen if other countries refuse to work with Singapore?

 - Business: Sassy Signs (sassysigns.com), publicity for yard sales and celebrations, launched February 2006
 - Investment: $25,000 for initial manufacturing
 - 2009 earnings: Around $220,000 in sales
When women match a need in the marketplace with what's best for them and their families—while devising smart strategies to make it all happen—everyone wins...To put in the first order, they had to deplete savings and max out credit cards. "It was terrifying," says Tammy, "but we believed we'd get our investment back and then some." At first the sisters sent out orders from their basements, but the business grew so much that they now use a fulfillment center...Profits took a while. "In the beginning, nearly every penny of sales went toward production, advertising, and paying down debt," says Tammy. But by devising new lines for special occasions and landing a big catalog deal Tammy and Nycole were finally able to pocket $10,000 each in 2009. With more people holding yard sales because of the economy, the sisters expect that 2010 will be a banner year.

Cheryl Toh's insight:

This is an inspiring story of stay-at-home moms who started a business in the worst recession and made it successful. I can see that they are really trying very hard to achieve what they thought was impossible. They did not give up even though 'it was terrifying'. I think that what made it possible was that they believed in what they will achieve in the end and that they have the determination to keep going. I wonder what made them have such determination?

This article is an inspiring story of stay-at-home moms who started a business in the worst recession and made it successful. I feel really encouraged by this article as it shows that everyone can make it its up to them whether they are willing to hold on and made the impossible possible. You have to believe in yourself that you can and will achieve the goal. Motivation from your love ones contribute greatly as well.

Ming Ting's curator insight, June 30, 2013 11:16 AM

From this article, I see that two stay-at-home moms became rich by starting a risky business during the worse recession, which became successful then. I think that nothing is impossible, as long as one has the determination and perseverance to do something, it can be completed. I wonder what made both of them want to start the business in the first place.
