Managing For Disruption

Managing For Disruption | Joy and Business | Scoop.it

Tradition embraces stability.  Time honored principles get that way because they have strong track records of success.  The tried and true, extrapolated into the future, often looks like a sure thing, while deviating from historical norms can look downright foolish.

Yet the funny thing about the future is that there’s no guarantee that it will look like the past.  Contexts change and when they do, old rules no longer apply.  Following them blindly does not honor the past, but diminishes it by confusing fealty with wisdom.

Since 1960, the average lifespan of a company on the S&P 500 has fallen from more than 60 years to less than 20.  The power of technology will increase as much in the next 18 months as it has in the last 30 years.

Clearly, technology cycles have begun to outpace planning cycles.  We need to learn to manage not for stability, but for disruption.

Trying to change the World Bank
Washington Post (blog)
Jim Yong Kim has initiated the World Bank's first massive reorganization in nearly two decades, and one that's been met with internal resistance from some of its economists.
Sabine Henrichfreise's insight:

To transform complex systems, a first set of Powerful Questions has to be designed to launch a Transformation Process  … "I only asked two questions. When were you proudest of being an employee at the World Bank Group? And what’s preventing us from being at our best every single day?"…

When the "Question Energy" is sucked by the system, these initial questions will trigger the next set of questions & actions ….

And here the Question I asked the 150 key actors in a Collective Coaching Session designed to generating the collective spirit of Transformation : "How can we recreate the joy to come working for ETRA  each day ? which triggered the next set of questions … "What is it we have to change to be collectively successful" … which triggered the next set of questions and actions ….

What are your questions ?

What The Happiest People Know About Work

What The Happiest People Know About Work | Joy and Business | Scoop.it

Study, work hard, and you will be successful.

This was the mantra repeated by educators throughout my youth. None of them added "be happy" to the success equation.

But a growing body of research in positive psychology and neuroscience is demonstrating that happiness is the secret ingredient to success. It turns out, our brains are more engaged, creative, productive, and resilient when in a positive state.

All this unhappiness comes with a high price tag to businesses, costing more than $550 billion a year in lost productivity. In his book, Donovan identifies 60 simple steps individuals can take to improve their happiness and get back on the path to success. Here are six of the top things happy workers do:

Avoiding energy sappers is what led me to retire from teaching. It was not the students and parents. It was the bureaucratic and technocratic nonsense that went on in school which passes itself off as education.
