The problem with data journalism - Quartz

The problem with data journalism - Quartz | journalisme | Scoop.it

The recent boom in “data-driven” journalism projects is exciting. It can elevate our knowledge, enliven statistics, and make us all more numerate.  But I worry that data give commentary a false sense of authority since data analysis is inherently prone to bias. The author’s priors, what he believes or wants to be true before looking at the data, often taint results that might appear pure and scientific. Even data-backed journalism is opinion journalism. So as we embark on this new wave of journalism, we should be aware of what we are getting and what we should trust.

Jordan Murdock's curator insight, October 13, 2015 2:47 PM

Data journalism is a great form of journalism because not only does it tell a story, it has data (usually in a picture form) to help back up the story. What one may not realize is that it's usually biased. Writers find data that backs up what they're saying, not the overall data. In this article, they provide three different ways to ethically use data, which I think that journalist should read so that they stay away from being biased in their stories.

The Art of the 'Twinterview': How to Conduct an Interview on Twitter

The Art of the 'Twinterview': How to Conduct an Interview on Twitter | journalisme | Scoop.it
I thought I had Twitter all figured out.  Then I decided to use the micro-blogging site to conduct a real-time Q&A with an author while unsuspecting followers watched.  How clever, I told myself.  How madcap! How wrong I was.  But here, tweeters, is how to do it right: 1.  Think days, not minutes. My first […]

How interactive documentaries represent a new form of innovation in digital journalism

How interactive documentaries represent a new form of innovation in digital journalism | journalisme | Scoop.it
From the advent of the printing press to the emergence of photography, radio, television, and now the Internet and mobile devices, journalists have always found ways to adapt to new technologies by changing the way they tell stories and reach audiences. Interactive and participatory documentaries offer a new opportunity in that development. They provide immersive, visual, and mobile-friendly storytelling techniques; provoke creative collaborations across institutions, "desks" and with publics; and stimulate the use of often overlooked assets such as archives. By so doing, they provide an array of solutions for journalistic institutions that wish to reach a new generation of users and make use of today's technological developments.

Why Journalists Should Study Poetry

Why Journalists Should Study Poetry - Thoughts on Media - Medium

The best journalism comes with the same meticulous care as the best poetry. The words of a lede are carefully chosen to not only convey facts but also emotion and purpose. Each shot or soundbite chosen to take a viewer on a journey. This is true not just of narrative or long form journalism but spot reporting, and dare I say it, tweeting.

Quelle différence entre Information et Communication?

Quelle différence entre Information et Communication? | journalisme | Scoop.it
