French OpenData Viz

French OpenData Viz | Journalisme graphique | Scoop.it

Our project aims to build a subgraph of the web, consisting of the French websites mentioning open-data. This graph enables viewers to see popular websites and connections between them, to see which kind of entities communicate with the others (Companies, Non profits/Blogs, Government agencies). It is a good way to discover the actors of the French open-data, and how they relate to one another.

The nodes are manually grouped by categories: type (Companies, Non profits/Blog, Government agencies) and roles (Open-Data Speaker, Open-Data Dealer), which led to two different graphs, accessibles via the menu.

Measuring the Human Urban Footprint

Measuring the Human Urban Footprint | Journalisme graphique | Scoop.it

Following on from the analysis of urban well-being, the data on these pages shows the result of a new mapping exercise that covers the same 129 ‘extended metropolitan regions’ across the world, with a total population of 1.2 billion people, representing 35 per cent of the world’s urban population in 2010. From Cotonou in Benin, with just more than 1.5 million people, to the Tokyo metropolitan region, with more than 42 million inhabitants, our study both measures and illustrates density patterns in urban regions across all five continents, expanding LSE Cities’ longstanding interest in the links between physical and social form.

A l'école de la data

A l'école de la data | Journalisme graphique | Scoop.it

The Data Wrangling Handbook is a companion text to the School of Data. Its function is something like a traditional textbook - it will provide the detail and background theory to support the School of Data courses and challenges.

The Data Wrangling Handbook is currently in an early stage of development. Over the coming months we intend to write more chapters and flesh out this skeleton with content and detail. We also hope to expand and improve upon this basic outline, so if there’s a section that you currently feel is missing, please do let us know!

The Data Wrangling Handbook should be accessible to all learners. It comes with a Glossary explaining the important terms and concepts. If you stumble across an unexplained term or a concept that requires more explanation, please do get in touch.

How Google Builds Its Maps—and What It Means for the Future of Everything

How Google Builds Its Maps—and What It Means for the Future of Everything | Journalisme graphique | Scoop.it
An exclusive look inside Ground Truth, the secretive program to build the world's best accurate maps.

Behind every Google Map, there is a much more complex map that's the key to your queries but hidden from your view. The deep map contains the logic of places: their no-left-turns and freeway on-ramps, speed limits and traffic conditions. This is the data that you're drawing from when you ask Google to navigate you from point A to point B -- and last week, Google showed me the internal map and demonstrated how it was built. It's the first time the company has let anyone watch how the project it calls GT, or "Ground Truth," actually works.
