Project of the Day: the Forum for a New World Governance

Project of the Day: the Forum for a New World Governance | journalism and politics | Scoop.it

Today, it is commonplace to say there is a crisis in world governance. As citizens all over the world are fully aware, tensions, conflicts, and wars are persisting, and national, regional, and international institutions are powerless, even when limiting their role to avoiding the permanent deterioration of people’s living conditions and means of subsistence. The conceptual and ideological foundations of existing global institutions are based on international relations among nation-states, referring to an idea of the state that emerged in seventeenth-century Europe. This model makes no sense today unless nation-states themselves are built on new foundations, and their role, operational structures, and methods of interaction with other political structures are redefined.

Why journalists need to learn about metadata | IJNet

Why journalists need to learn about metadata | IJNet | journalism and politics | Scoop.it

Now that we know that Dropbox snoops in our filesand that Google shares our data with the NSA and the FBI, journalists must acquire new skills to avoid leaving a trace behind or let others track anonymous sources.

Data on our data is called "metadata." It's there every time we leave an electronic record behind. When we take a photo, it will have data about the camera, the time it was taken, and probably the name of who took it if geolocation and face detection are enabled on the device. So taking a picture now is much more than just a photo. It's telling information about yourself.

During this year's Media Party, organized by Hacks/Hackers Buenos Aires, Daniel Foguelman from the security company InfoByte, led a workshop on discovering and cleaning your metadata. During the workshop, Foguelman taught journalists how to discover and remove information from pdfs, jpgs and htmls, to avoid leaving information behind unintentionally.

"Usage Of Social Media For Political Communication" by Stefan Stieglitz, Tobias Brockmann et al.

Social media enable individuals to share knowledge, experiences, opinions, and ideas among each other. With regard to political sector, social media can be an enabler for participation and democracy among citizens. As the 2008 U.S. presidential election campaigns have shown, social media platforms such as social network sites (SNSs), microblogging services or weblogs can also be successfully used by political actors to disseminate information to voters as well as to contact and discuss with them. In this study, we seek to gain insight into the political communication based on social media in Germany by conducting an analysis of social media presence of German political parties on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and YouTube as well as a survey of members of the German parliament regarding their social media use. Based on the results, we present an overview of the relevance and potentials of as well as obstacles to the usage of social media for political communication from the perspective of political institutions. Further, we derive implications regarding the need for social media monitoring in political context as well as research implications in information systems.
