Key findings include a sharp increase in the use of social media platforms to reach audiences, a surge in the use of mobile for news, a decline in desktop internet and significant growth in video news consumption online.

To inform its creative approach, the publisher is seeking out a deeper understanding of its audience. Trinity Mirror recently conducted a major research project, dubbed Modal Britain, which identified three characteristics that set its readership apart, the “three Bs”: their beliefs (a premium on social justice), betterment (their own personal achievable goals) and belonging (their sense of family and community).

“By looking at the three Bs, we can really see which of these areas most fits the brief and we can amplify an idea to fit one or more of the three. This insight then informs our creative editorial directors as to a direction for ideas. If we understand what motivates the audience, then this sparks our approach to content,” he said.

"First, digital design is not as evolved as print design. The print newspaper offers the ability to communicate hierarchies of salience and context, all of which the standard Web article template lacks.

Second, for many of them, Web analytics do not play a major role in their day-to-day decision-making. Page views and other metrics are tracked, but beyond limited A/B testing — picking winners based on traffic — analytics do not guide major editorial decisions.

Third, while they seek to make stories and infographics as understandable as possible, memorability is not a major focus. It cannot be measured, and so it generally is not considered."

“I sat at my desk fantasizing about how to escape, and thinking what would be the most amazing narrative I could pursue,” he recalls. “What is the ultimate quest?” For Salopek, the answer was “the spread of homo sapiens out of Africa.” So he conceived a project tracing that migration, from Ethiopia, across the Middle East and Asia, and down through the Americas to the tip of Argentina.

To follow that path, he would use the same means our long-ago ancestors did: his feet.

Thus was born the Out of Eden Walk, a seven-year quest to walk across the world and report every step of the way. Now two years into the project, Salopek has gotten as far as Tbilisi, Georgia, writing long stories for National Geographic and shorter pieces for an ongoing blog.

Data journalism is currently a hot buzzword among journalists in South Africa. But in reality it’s a case of lots of talking and not much action, with few journalists and newsrooms doing much real data-driven storytelling.

Too often it’s because old school editors working with very tight resources and dwindling staff numbers don’t understand the value and depth that good data-driven stories could add to their reportage. They are reluctant to allow time for reporters to learn these new skills, or to give those who have them the space to work on data-driven stories or longer term investigative projects.

A AJR publicava 11 edições razoavelmente sólidas por ano – com um website decente – depois passou para três edições por ano e em seguida suspendeu a edição impressa e todo o seu conteúdo sobre “inovação na mídia” passou a ser oferecido apenas na internet, num site projetado e criado por estudantes.

It wasn’t so bad, actually: I’d smile sympathetically, tell them their feelings were completely understandable, and ask if they’d be so kind as to speak with me anyway (which, being perfectly nice people, they invariably did).

Traditional and online publishers are struggling to cash in on their surging mobile traffic, raising questions about their future growth as consumers increasingly turn to smartphones and tablets for media.

News and information outlets ranging from the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal to Business Insider and About.com all can point to rapid growth in mobile usage. Time spent on publishers’ mobile offerings jumped 40% in the 12 months through July and now accounts for 55% of total time spent on their properties, up from 42% two years ago, according to estimates by measurement specialist comScore.

The problem is that for many publishers mobile revenue isn’t keeping pace—by a long shot—creating what industry executives are calling a “mobile gap.”
