Ethics in the News - 2017 report

Ethics in the News - 2017 report | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it
After a year of unprecedented news-making, media around the world are stepping back to ask a pertinent question – what is the future of ethical journalism in an age when it appears that the public around the world are falling out with facts, humanity and accountable truth-telling?

Ethics in the News by the Ethical Journalism Network, which launches on Tuesday 10 January, throws some light on ethical challenges for media and gives journalists some key tips on ethical survival techniques.

In Europe and America the report looks at how media covered the UK vote to leave the European Union and the Trump election which intensified concerns about the revival of racism, extremism and political propaganda across the western world.

Ethics in the News analyses fake news and how journalism with a public purpose can be overwhelmed in a do-it-yourself world of communications that has led to a so-called post-truth movement in which facts and expert opinion are left on the sidelines of public discourse.

But this is no “western media” crisis. Elsewhere, the question is equally relevant.
Manuel Pinto's insight:
The document examines the main news ethical issues in the different parts of the world.

This survey is as murky as chocolate milk | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it

Last week, a Washington Post headline provoked a collective groan of embarrassment: apparently “seven percent of all American adults” think that chocolate milk comes from brown cows. Unsurprisingly, The Internet took notice. Jokes about American intelligence were plentiful. Many palms hit many faces. I first saw the story when a journalist I respect posted the […]

Venezuelanos convertem ônibus urbanos em salas de redação para combater a desinformação | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it

“Bom Dia.

How do we build a better recommendation experience for mobile news readers?

How do we build a better recommendation experience for mobile news readers? | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it
For subway commuters, it’s a common enough situation: you get on the train, pull out of the station and…ugh, you’re offline. On your phone: yesterday’s tweets, maybe a news app loaded up with old stories, a newsletter with links you can’t open.

Although many news apps now enable offline reading, they don’t ensure that the things we have access to offline are relevant to us as individual readers. I can get content offline from a news app on my morning train ride, but when I pull out of the station, I have no guarantee that what it will have served me will be relevant to my interests, in a format I like, or something I can reasonably read in the the time I have left in my commute.

At the Guardian Mobile Innovation Lab, we think there is space to push past what currently exists for offline reading, particularly where it intersects with the burgeoning area of content recommendations. To do this, we’ve looked at what exists for each type of experience and tried to identify the gaps and opportunities.

Technological Skills and New Professional Profiles: Present Challenges for Journalism

"The paper aims at understanding the intersections between technology and the professional practices in some of the new trends in journalism that are using the new tools: multimedia journalism, immersive journalism and data journalism. The great dilemma facing journalism when training new professionals -especially the youngest- is not anymore the training in new technologies anymore. The main concern lies in taking advantage of their skills to create a new computational model while keeping the essence of journalism. There is a twofold objective: answering questions about which tools are being used to produce pieces of news, and which kind of knowledge is needed in the present century. Based on the review of reports from professional organizations and institutes, it was developed an exploratory research to 25 European and American journalists was developed. We have selected three cases of study. They allowed us to conclude that the technology matrix is going to remain and that change and digital process is not turning back and demands to evolve and adapt to new dynamics of work in multidisciplinary teams where the debate between journalists and technologists must be ongoing. Different approaches nourish the double way of skills and competences in the profiles of the current technological journalist, which professionals perceive as a demand in the present ecosystem."

Advanced Guide on Verifying Video Content

Advanced Guide on Verifying Video Content | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it

"One of the most common issues for researchers and journalists is verifying user-generated video content, most often found on social networks and file sharing platforms, such as YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and so on. There is no silver bullet to verify every video, and it may be nearly impossible to verify some videos short of acquiring the original file from the source. However, there is a range of methods we can use to verify most content, especially as it relates to making sure that videos showing breaking news events are not recycled from previous incidents. There are already numerous guides online for verifying video, most notably in the Verification Handbook. This guide will include some extra quirks frequently used by the Bellingcat team, and make an effort to provide our readers with ways to work around the limitations of the available tools. After reading this guide, hopefully you will not only know how to use this tool set, but also how to use creativity in avoiding dead ends."

The Emotional Toll on Journalists Covering the Refugee Crisis is the first study of its kind into the response of news media professionals covering a humanitarian crisis. Supported by the International News Safety Institute (INSI), it shows how moral injury - linked as it is to a sense of guilt and the loss of one’s moral compass - emerged as the biggest psychological challenge facing those covering the refugee crisis.

‘Cuadernos de Periodistas’ analiza información espectáculo en televisión | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it

Livro propõe jornalismo baseado nas ideias de Paulo Freire | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it

| Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it

| Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it

Troops, Trolls and Troublemakers: A Global Inventory of Organized Social Media Manipulation | The Computational Propaganda Project

"Cyber troops are government, military or political party teams committed to manipulating public opinion over social media. In this working paper, we report on specific organizations created, often with public money, to help define and manage what is in the best interest of the public. We compare such organizations across 28 countries, and inventory them according to the kinds of messages, valences and communication strategies used. We catalogue their organizational forms and evaluate their capacities in terms of budgets and staffing. This working paper summarizes the findings of the first comprehensive inventory of the major organizations behind social media manipulation. We find that cyber troops are a pervasive and global phenomenon. Many different countries employ significant numbers of people and resources to manage and manipulate public opinion online, sometimes targeting domestic audiences and sometimes targeting foreign publics. The earliest reports of organized social media manipulation emerged in 2010, and by 2017 there are details on such organizations in 28 countries. Looking across the 28 countries, every authoritarian regime has social media campaigns targeting their own populations, while only a few of them target foreign publics. In contrast, almost every democracy in this sample has organized social media campaigns that target foreign publics, while political-party-supported campaigns target domestic voters. Authoritarian regimes are not the only or even the best at organized social media manipulation. The earliest reports of government involvement in nudging public opinion involve democracies, and new innovations in political communication technologies often come from political parties and arise during high-profile elections. Over time, the primary mode for organizing cyber troops has gone from involving military units that experiment with manipulating public opinion over social media networks to strategic communication firms that take contracts from governments for social media campaigns."

How the Filter Bubble affects the way we consume news

"From TV to radio to online media, it’s easier than ever to limit the sources we get news from in 2017. As we choose news sources that cater to our own beliefs, we’re effectively creating an echo chamber in our own homes filled with the news we want to hear — a concept that Upworthy co-founder Eli Pariser called the Filter Bubble. This problem has become more acute with constant talk of everything from political tweets to “fake news.” But at Upworthy, we believe it’s more important than ever to recognize the effect this has and how we can find ways to break those bubbles and find our common ground."

Gulf Crisis: Call to Shut Al Jazeera Threaten Journalism Across Arab World

Gulf Crisis: Call to Shut Al Jazeera Threaten Journalism Across Arab World | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it
It’s very rare for a global media network not to upset somebody. Over the years CNN, Fox News, RT (Russia Today), and even the BBC, regarded by many as the brand leader in trusted public broadcasting, have come in for a political pasting and accusations of bias.

But none of them gets close to the abuse heaped upon Al Jazeera, the Qatar-based network, which for more than 20 years has been a thorn in the side of authoritarian rulers in the Arab world and today faces an unprecedented demand for its closure.

The Aljazeera phenomenon has been an iconic and turbulent media voice in a region where religious sectarianism, civil strife and autocratic politics have been resolute obstacle to free speech and much-needed social and democratic reform.
