The New York Times has a new email newsletter aimed at college students

The New York Times this week has launched a new email newsletter aimed at college students that will feature a collection of stories that will help students “through their next steps, both professional and personal, in a way that doesn’t come across as prescriptive.”

"A recent college graduate who has aspirations to be a journalist gets advicefrom Jayson Blair, at a high school graduation presided over by the disgraced ex-New York Times writer, who says he can’t imagine what the first line of his obituary will read:

“Now Jayson, you have a long life ahead of you. But one day, we’ll read your obituary somewhere, maybe even in The New York Times and I’m wondering what you would like it to say?”"

Jeff Bezos on The Washington Post’s digital strategy, the future of print, and sending Trump to space | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it
Jeff Bezos doesn’t spend much time in Washington, D.C. or at the offices of his Washington Post, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t mean he isn’t thinking about the newspaper he bought for $250 million in 2013. He regularly meets with editors and executives by conference call and in-person in Seattle, but Bezos said he uses some more personal time to think about the paper.

The next generation of journalism students has no idea what they’re getting into

The next generation of journalism students has no idea what they’re getting into | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it
In the 1950s, M. King Hubbard devised an economic theory about what would happen when humans hit our peak oil extraction point. Several decades later, I think Hubbard’s theory, with a little tweaking, makes for a pretty good descriptor of the current media landscape. Or, as I like to call it, “peak content.” Most of...

The Coda Story homepage is a busy place — filled to the corners, literally, with stories exploring different facets of Russia’s war on LGBTQ rights. There’s a video profile of a transgender woman living in Georgia. There’s a collection of intimate portraits of the LGBTQ community in Armenia’s capital city. There’s an overview of the Kremlin’s public stance on gay rights.

| Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it

Pour un journalisme à 360 degrés | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it

Truth or Consequences: Where is Watchdog Journalism Today?

Truth or Consequences: Where is Watchdog Journalism Today? | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it
To many people, watchdog reporting is synonymous with investigative reporting, specifically, ferreting out secrets. But there’s another, maybe even more crucial form of watchdog reporting, especially in this age of relentless public relations and spin. It involves reporting what may well be in plain sight, contrasting that with what officials in government and other positions of power say, rebuffing and rebutting misinformation, and sometimes even taking a position on what the facts suggest is the right solution.

Surprising Findings In Our News Apps Survey

Surprising Findings In Our News Apps Survey | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it
The Monday Note survey on News applications usage yielded surprising findings:
(1) You rely on very small number of news apps;
(2) Twitter and RSS-related apps score quite high, they are the de facto vector for News;
(3) Once huge, Flipboard is losing ground fast while Apple News is not faring well;
(4) Half of readers surveyed would rather have no ads in exchange for a monthly fee.
