Directrices editoriales. Valores y criterios de la BBC

Directrices editoriales. Valores y criterios de la BBC | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it

Some argue that the rise of the internet has destroyed — or severely crippled — journalism, but all it has really done is disrupted traditional mass-media business models. Journalism itself has never been healthier, and new players are finding new models

European Initiative for Media Pluralism - A European mobilisation in defence of media freedom

European Initiative for Media Pluralism - A European mobilisation in defence of media freedom | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it

"European Alternatives and Alliance Internationale de Journalistes have been working since 2010 towards the establishment of a European Initiative for Media Pluralism, a coalition promoting the idea that European institutions should safeguard the right to free, independent and pluralistic information. The European Initiative for Media Pluralism (EIMP) brings together organisations, media, and professional bodies from throughout Europe with the immediate purpose of running a European Citizens Initiative (ECI) demanding the implementation of an EU Directive on media pluralism. The ECI is a new tool of participatory democracy introduced from April 2012 by the Lisbon Treaty, which allows civil society coalitions to collect online and offline one million signatures in at least 7 EU member states to present directly to the European Commission a proposal forming the base of an EU Directive, initiating a legislative process."

Net Neutrality, Algorithmic Filtering and Ferguson (USA)

Net Neutrality, Algorithmic Filtering and Ferguson (USA) | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it

"

Ferguson is about many things, starting first with race and policing in America.

But it’s also about internet, net neutrality and algorithmic filtering.

It’s a clear example of why “saving the Internet”, as it often phrased, is not an abstract issue of concern only to nerds, Silicon Valley bosses, and few NGOs. It’s why “algorithmic filtering” is not a vague concern.

It’s a clear example why net neutrality is a human rights issue; a free speech issue; and an issue of the voiceless being heard, on their own terms."

Rieder: Paying the ultimate price for journalism

Rieder: Paying the ultimate price for journalism | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it

“It is a vivid reminder of the dangers that journalists encounter to bear witness, of the extraordinary bravery they often bring to their craft,” writes Rem Rieder. “There's a lot of cynicism about journalism today, about the preoccupation with the sensational and the trivial that stems from the frantic effort to build large digital audiences. But it's important to keep in mind that journalists continue to do important work, work that is critical in a democracy. Sometimes they pay the ultimate price.”

Guardian Media Group CEO Andrew Miller: Going global in a digital world

Guardian Media Group CEO Andrew Miller: Going global in a digital world | Journalism: the citizen side | Scoop.it

"In recent years, media consumption has changed beyond recognition: more and more people are accessing content from global sources, using multiple platforms and sharing volumes of self-produced content. The internet has broken down the geographic boundaries that news organisations have historically acted within, dramatically shrinking the world and allowing content to travel around the globe at high speed. News is no longer a national game — media organisations are competing for audiences’ attention with national counterparts and global players."
