I can't speak for anyone else's working process, but I'm going to set down here the process I've developed over the years, which I've found gives me the most benefits.

These include: pretty much eliminating writers block, increased effiency, being able to knock out a draft in a fraction of the time it took me before, and a more consistent, solid story.

If you have stories you’d like others to read — whether family or a broader audience — why not use your journal as a place to polish your storytelling skills? After all, when you’re journaling about your life you are, in fact, recording stories.

 

Here are some steps to try:

- sketch the story

- freewrite about the scene

- bring on the characters

- slow down the action

- resolution

- write your story

- re-write your story

- and re-write your story at least one more time
