Paedophile who used social networking to groom teenage girls jailed for nine years

A 28-year-old man who used a teenage social networking website to groom two girls aged 14 and 15 has been jailed for nine years.

Benjamin Spratt, 28, of Laurel Grove, Chelmsford pleaded guilty on Tuesday, 26 March to four counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, two counts of sexual activity with a child and two counts of digital and oral penetration of a 14-year-old female at Croydon Crown Court.
He was sentenced on Thursday, 25 April at the same court.
Spratt, a licensed taxi driver, (pictured) was arrested in November 2011 at his home address in Chelmsford.
During September and October of 2011, he used the website MYLOL to approach young girls. The website is designed for teenagers to interact with each other.
While on the Internet used his experience as a DJ to build up a rapport with teenage girls he met on the website to further his relationship with possible victims.
After meeting his 14-year-old victim online, he travelled to her at her home in southeast London to sexually abuse her.
He then turned up at her school two days later and she told her teachers that he was outside. The school called police but he had left before they arrived.
Spratt was arrested and questioned by officers from Sapphire. On further examination of his computer, officers discovered he had been in contact with numerous young girls.
Officers tracked down a 15-year-old girl who told them that Spratt convinced her to engage in sexual activity online while he performed a sex act on himself.
Spratt was also placed on the sex offenders register for life and given a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for five years.
He was also banned from using the internet to talk with children, communicate with any female under 16 without supervision and to allow the police to examine any device with either internet or digital image storage.
Detective Constable John Daly of the MPS Sapphire Command said: "Benjamin Spratt is a predatory paedophile who has targeted a vulnerable young girl to satisfy his own sexual needs.
"The MPS is dedicated to protecting the public from sexual predators and encouraging victims to come forward. They will be fully supported by specially trained officers."
Detective Inspector Keith Ward of the MPS Sapphire Command said: "The victim was targeted, groomed and exploited by Spratt.

"This crime again shows how the internet and social media can be used by paedophiles to snare their victims. This conviction will provide reassurance that we will relentlessly pursue those who commit these dreadful crimes against children."

Teenage girls are ‘selling sex for alcohol’

TEENAGE girls are offering sexual favours in exchange for alcohol and drugs, MSPs have been told.

Mackenzie Roberts's curator insight, April 11, 2013 10:16 PM

Teenage girls are more likely to be taken advantage of when intoxicated, so statistics show girls sell sex for alchol because they know majority of the time guys will be interested. this causes many social problems like unwanted pregnancy or unwanted sex that they then later regret and self-loath themselves because of it. This may cause suicidal thoughts or mental issues so we need to consider the issues with legal and illegal drugs

dylan lees's curator insight, May 20, 2013 4:31 AM

My opinion is that teenages will do anything for alcohol at this point in there lives. As soon as they get addicted they can barely control themselves and not many can recover and normally have a terrible life.

Isabel Bodey's curator insight, May 13, 2015 4:09 AM

This is so sad that girls are in such need for alcohol that they will sell their bodies to undeserving men. When they are intoxicated they are taken more advantage of and this could all end up in unwanted pregnancy's which could result in an abortion. Due to this mistreatment  and perhaps abortions depression and suicidal thoughts come into their lives and may result in some very serious outcomes. And to think all these harmful things just for a drink of alcohol on one particular night.
