Egyptian judoka sent home from Rio after refusing to shake Israeli opponent's hand

Egyptian judoka sent home from Rio after refusing to shake Israeli opponent's hand | Green Forward - Sports | Scoop.it
Egyptian judoka Islam El Shehaby has been sent home from the Rio Olympics after refusing to shake the hand of Israeli Or Sasson following the end of their bout, the International Olympic Committee said on Monday.
Josh Marks's insight:
Egypt was the first Arab state to officially recognize Israel with the 1979 peace treaty and this loser can't even shake the hand of his Israeli opponent? Glad he was sent home. Bigotry has no place at the Olympics.

Josh Marks's insight:
Just finished reading "An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States." Should be required reading at every educational institution in this country. I'm thankful my ancestors immigrated here from Eastern and Central Europe to escape persecution as Jewish people. But the land they came to was violently cleared of its original inhabitants in genocidal acts of settler colonialism. Oh, and for those who still believe that the name of the Washington football team somehow honors Native Americans: "The settlers gave a name to the mutilated and bloody corpses they left in the wake of scalp-hunts: redskins."

Houska: Regardless of WaPo Poll, Native Mascots Hurt Our Youth

Houska: Regardless of WaPo Poll, Native Mascots Hurt Our Youth | Green Forward - Sports | Scoop.it
A Washington Post poll claims 9 out of 10 Native Americans have no problem with the name of the Washington football team. But it ignores the harm.
Josh Marks's insight:
Great response to the questionable Washington Post poll on the name of the Washington football team from my friend Tara Houska, adviser on Native American affairs for the Bernie Sanders campaign. Houska: "No matter where you stand on the name change and mascot issue, Native mascots have repeatedly been empirically shown to harm the self-esteem of Native American youth. Period. It does not matter if I’m offended or if your ‘Native American friend’ is not. Racial stereotypes are harmful to our children. Another study demonstrated that Native mascots increase the likelihood of non-Native children to indoctrinate stereotypes of other races. Racism begets racism."

Redskins has 8 ratings and 6 reviews. Chris said: ARC via Netgalley. I really couldn’t care less about American football. Truly, couldn’t care less
Josh Marks's insight:
Just finished reading this book about the controversy over the name and mascot of the Washington football team. We will never be able to improve the standard of living and respect the sovereign rights of First Nations indigenous people in this country as long as we continue to see them as relics of the past in the form of racialized sports mascots.

Robert Griffin III, the 2012 NFL offensive player of the year and one-time face of the franchise, was released by the Redskins on Monday.
Josh Marks's insight:
Best of luck Robert. I hope you find a team with a non-racist name and mascot and a city and fan base that does not accept and even defend the institutional racism of the Washington professional football team. Thanks for your time here RGIII.

Concussion Watch

Concussion Watch | Green Forward - Sports | Scoop.it
How many NFL players are suffering concussions every season? How are teams handling their injuries? "Concussion Watch" tries to answer these questions by tracking every officially reported head injury in the NFL.
Josh Marks's insight:

Frontline's ‪Concussion‬ Watch counted 197 ‪NFL‬ concussions this season. Concussions are up 60% from 2014. That is also the most head injuries they've counted in 4 years of tracking concussions. Another reason why I will not be watching football this weekend.

Josh Marks's insight:

With Will Smith starrer "Concussion" coming out Christmas day, here is an article I wrote last year about a study from the Brain Imaging Research Center at Israel’s Ben-Gurion University of the Negev that found significant damage to the blood-brain barrier of professional football players following “unreported” trauma or mild concussions.

Poll: 79 Percent Of Americans Oppose Children's Tackle Football | Green Forward - Sports | Scoop.it
It's not only moms who are worried about football's effects on kids.
Josh Marks's insight:
No future for tackle football unless major changes are made to the game to avoid head injuries. Otherwise, tackle football will eventually become a marginalized niche sport like mixed martial arts -- too violent for the general public.

The NFL Allegedly Covered Up Concussion Research | Green Forward - Sports | Scoop.it
A new congressional report claims the league tried to pull funding on concussion research.

The NFL has no integrity. None. The league's greed knows no bounds. Putting taxpayers on the hook for $16 million instead of paying for the concussion study? Really NFL? A new low.

My queasy night at Lviv’s controversial ‘Jewish’ eatery

My queasy night at Lviv’s controversial ‘Jewish’ eatery | Green Forward - Sports | Scoop.it
The non-Jewish waiters wear fake peyot and haggle over prices at a quasi-Jewish restaurant attached to the historic, ruined Golden Rose Synagogue.
Josh Marks's insight:
Check out this restaurant in Ukraine that plays on crude anti-Semitic Jewish stereotypes in a town where virtually all the Jews were murdered by the Nazis. I wonder if this is how First Nations indigenous people feel when sports fans dress up in stereotypical costumes to cheer on Native American-themed teams in a country that committed genocide against their ancestors. From the article on the Golden Rose restaurant in L'viv: "At the restaurant, patrons are given hats with sidecurls intended to mimic those worn by Orthodox Jewish men. There are no prices on the menu. Diners must haggle with the waiter over how much to pay."

Redskins, in absentia, on trial at Temple Shalom | Washington Jewish Week | Green Forward - Sports | Scoop.it
Tribal rights attorney Tara Houska talks while ESPN senior writer Mike Wise looks on at an Oct. 27 forum on the Washington Redskins’ team name at Temple Shalom
Josh Marks's insight:

At a forum on the Washington professional football team name controversy held at Temple Shalom in Chevy Chase last week, Tara Zhaabowekwe Houska, a citizen of Couchiching First Nation and a tribal rights attorney, cited social science studies showing that stereotypical Native American sports mascots have a negative impact on the self-esteem of Native American children. Asked Houska: “If we know that it hurts their self-esteem then how can you allow this to be perpetuated?” She was joined in the discussion by ESPN senior writer Mike Wise. Read my Washington Jewish Week story for more.
