Examining the network of power plants, transmission wires, and pipelines gives new insights into the inner workings of the electrical grid.


Every time you switch on a light, charge your electronics or heat your home in the winter, you’re relying upon a tremendous network of energy infrastructure that literally stretches across the country: power plants, pipelines, transmission wires and storage facilities.

It can be hard to visualize all this infrastructure and understand how it makes abundant energy available throughout the country. To help see a bigger picture, a new map, just released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, combines a range of data (locations of power plants, electricity lines, natural gas pipelines, refineries, storage facilities and more) into an elegant, interactive interface that helps to piece how it all fits together. You can also zoom in on your own city to see the types of power plants generating electricity nearby.

The map also includes layers of real-time information on storm movement and risks, allowing energy analysts to better understand the potential impact of storms.

All 43 Gensler offices were invited to participate in the conceptual project, in which we challenged our designers to identify open space in the city and reimagine it as a town square.

For the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, the numbers don’t lie – and they don’t fail to impress, either. In one of the U.S.’s sunniest regions, the sky is the limit for this solar power project.


The Ivanpah project, comprised of three separate plants to be built in phases, has begun construction on federal land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The project received a $1.6 billion loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Electricity from Ivanpah will be sold under multiple power-purchase agreements, each of 25-30 years duration with Southern California Edison and Pacific Gas and Electric Company. The electricity generated by all three plants is enough to support a yearly average of 140,000 homes, and more than twice that number when operating at maximum capacity during the peak hours of the day.

Ivanpah is the first large-scale solar thermal plant to be built in California in 20 years, supporting California’s goal of 33 percent renewable power generation by 2020.

There are a few things to like about this infographic put out by the EPA's Energy Star program.

For one thing, it has a whole section on climate change instead of the usual single-minded fixation on saving energy. While their five energy-saving tips are pretty basic, they are not trivial. Recommendation 3, "seal your heating and cooling ducts", is surprisingly important, given that many people have their air conditioning ducts running through their very hot attics and are wasting serious money by cooling it instead of the space below.

In areas of dense population, we should concentrate our efforts toward green and energy efficiency. Any improvement in energy efficiency would be compounded by the number of people this would be available to. That woould increase the cost effictiveness and impact on the planet quickly.
