Teens spend 9 hours a day using media, report says - CNN.com | Jewish Life Today | Scoop.it
A new report by Common Sense Media, exploring the daily media habits of tweens and teens, has implications for parents, educators and policymakers.
ruthschapira's insight:

Excerpt: "Let's just put nine hours in context for a second. That's more time than teens typically spend sleeping, and more time than they spend with their parents and teachers. And the nine hours does not include time spent using media at school or for their homework."

Josh Marks's curator insight, November 25, 2015 12:32 PM

At the Capitol Hill opening of an exhibition documenting the 3,500 year relationship of the Jewish people with the Holy Land, UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova said this: “We need to know this history. The world needs to know this history because knowing history is important for peace today. Knowing history is important to counter hatred and anti-Semitism. This history cannot be denied. This is the core mandate of UNESCO — to promote mutual understanding, respect, to fight all forms of racism, anti-Semitism and denial. This I believe has never been so important. This is also how we must respond to violent extremism, to hatred and to intolerance.” Read my Washington Jewish Week story for more on the event.

ruthschapira's insight:

Does your non-profit follows any or all of the three recommendations?

At a forum on the Washington professional football team name controversy held at Temple Shalom in Chevy Chase last week, Tara Zhaabowekwe Houska, a citizen of Couchiching First Nation and a tribal rights attorney, cited social science studies showing that stereotypical Native American sports mascots have a negative impact on the self-esteem of Native American children. Asked Houska: “If we know that it hurts their self-esteem then how can you allow this to be perpetuated?” She was joined in the discussion by ESPN senior writer Mike Wise. One New Way To Join A Jewish Community | Reclaiming Judaism | Jewish Life Today | Scoop.it
This season, when so many emotions surge through us, it is comforting to be within a community. That's part of the grand design, for Jews to be together to usher in the New Year.
