Creating Conditions for Growth: A New Hub for Masa Educators

Creating Conditions for Growth: A New Hub for Masa Educators | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Since embarking upon my own journey with Masa, I have sought to understand how the Masa team and its partners can better work together to fulfill this monumental educational mission, particularly within the context of our fast-paced, complex and globalized world and the challenges it presents for us and our participants both as individuals and as a people. In order to fulfill this mission, over the last two years, Masa’s organizational leadership has consulted with our diverse community of stakeholders in Israel and from around the world and as a result of this process we are implementing a new set of pedagogies and core principles, diverse professional learning opportunities and an evaluation process that will better serve our participants.

Reflections on the Current Debate on Women’s Professional Spiritual Leadership

Reflections on the Current Debate on Women’s Professional Spiritual Leadership | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
During the past two weeks, the policy statement issued by the Orthodox Union on the role of women in spiritual leadership in the Orthodox community has generated much discussion and debate. We note in introduction that we have great regard and esteem for the leadership of the OU, its commitment to the Jewish people and the amazing work they do on behalf of us all.  Moreover, we deeply respect the learning and sincerity of the panel of roshei yeshiva and synagogue rabbis on the rabbinic panel created by the OU. A number of them are cherished teachers and mentors, some are good friends and colleagues, and some are even students from past decades. At the same time, we feel it important to share reflections on the statement, its genesis and its implications.

These Jewish summer camps are proud to be basic

These Jewish summer camps are proud to be basic | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
At a time when many Jewish summer camps are spending millions to build everything from gymnasiums to trapezes to pool halls, a handful of Jewish summer camps have eschewed the pricey bells and whistles, focusing instead on the traditional homespun pleasures of, well, camp. Some have passed on fancy upgrades as a matter of principle, or because they don’t comport with the camp’s particular emphasis.

For others, it’s simply not their thing.

The Revival of British Jewry

The Revival of British Jewry | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
This essay, however, argues that the vibrancy of a community should not be judged by the threats that it faces. While threats and danger form an existential part of Jewish life, they do not necessarily determine the strength or weakness of a particular community. It is important that a community understands the nature of such threats and can organize to overcome them successfully. In doing so, the Jewish community in the U.K. provides evidence that it is vibrant and undergoing a revival. This study focuses on four aspects that show the revival of British Jewish life: demography; religious identity; educational and cultural activity; and confronting antisemitism.

An Interesting Visual on How to Cite Online Sources in APA Style

An Interesting Visual on How to Cite Online Sources in APA Style | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Following the publication of our MLA poster, we have received several requests from our readers asking for a similar poster for APA style. We went ahead and created the visual below to help you better understand how to cite online sources in APA style. The guidelines and examples featured in this visual are taken from the book Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association 6th Edition (American Psychological Association, 2010, pp. 200-210). The book provides guidelines on how to cite several other materials from printed documents to legal and court documents. It also includes chapters on writing clearly and concisely, mechanics of style, manuscript structure and content, crediting sources and many more. It is absolutely a great manual to have in your library.

Jewish Day Schools Are Uniquely Able to Deliver an Exceptional Education for Today

Jewish Day Schools Are Uniquely Able to Deliver an Exceptional Education for Today | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
“The beauty of Jewish day school is that it can bring the best of our tradition together with the cutting edge in education,” I often tell prospective and current parents. Yes, we teach Hebrew, Chumash, Navi, Mishna and Gemara, and our children emerge deeply knowledgeable and equipped with high-level analytic skills from study and discussion of text. At the same time, today’s Jewish day school provides things like instruction in computer coding starting in the earliest grades, and weaves engineering seamlessly into the secular curriculum (even finding ways to connect it to Judaic studies, like using a 3-D printer to create miniature items from the Mishkan, guided by Torah instructions!). Yes, we teach the secular subjects too, all the while being nimble, forward-looking and often best able to successfully balance the basics with opportunities for creativity, exploration and discovery that make learning meaningful.

As an educator, I like to say that it’s not about “A’s” but about “Aha!” moments—be they while debating Jewish texts or tackling a challenging concept in math class. Those are the moments that serve as a student’s joyful reward, building a lifelong love of learning.

What's New About the New Israeli Shekel? Two Notes Feature Female Poets: Leah Goldberg and Rachel Bluwstein.

What's New About the New Israeli Shekel? Two Notes Feature Female Poets: Leah Goldberg and Rachel Bluwstein. | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
After much hoopla, the Bank of Israel recently announced that two new Israeli banknotes will be issued shortly. They’re part of a new series highlighting renowned 20th century Israeli poets whose life and work parallel the birth of the State of Israel and the fulfillment of the Zionist dream: A portrait of Rachel Bluwstein (Rachel the Poetess) will grace the new 20-Shekel note, and Leah Goldberg will appear on the 100 NIS. This series—a welcome change from the previous series featuring Israeli politicians—also includes 20th century Hebrew poets Shaul Tchernichovsky and Natan Alterman, who appear on the 50 and 200 NIS banknotes respectively. The planned released of the Series C NIS is late 2017.

Are we building the world we all want?"

That's the question Mark Zuckerberg used Thursday to kick off an open letter to the Facebook community he helped to build. The answer he offered was that he's hoping his company, the largest social network in the world, will contribute to shaping what he thinks will be a better one.

"Progress now requires humanity coming together not just as cities or nations, but also as a global community," he said.

What We Saw and Heard at Prizmah 2017 - Rosov Consulting, LLC.

What We Saw and Heard at Prizmah 2017 - Rosov Consulting, LLC. | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
The inaugural Prizmah Jewish Day School Conference brought together more than 1,000 day school educators and education leaders for three days of learning and sharing educational best practices. We were excited to play a role in this learning process and to contribute to Prizmah at such a formative moment in the organization’s trajectory (since summer 2016, Rosov Consulting has been working with Prizmah to help coach staff from different legacy organizations, as they refer to themselves, so they can learn to do their best work together). It was especially gratifying to see the number of organizations that support the day school field that are in turn supported by the efforts of the team at Rosov Consulting.

In Ukraine, Finding Home and Rewriting History

In Ukraine, Finding Home and Rewriting History | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
This effort grew out of a confluence of enthusiastic grassroots efforts, and growing demand, by Jewish youth in Ukraine to build a local youth movement, the combined guidance and resources of both JDC and BBYO, and the expertise of JDC-BBYO fellows, placed in Ukraine, who helped provide critical tools to shape and build the movement that these young Jews dreamed of. In just three years, AJT has grown to galvanize its members in local chapters throughout the FSU, provide volunteer opportunities, and bring teens together at an annual conference each year just like their teenage peers in JDC-BBYO partner communities around the world.

I attended this year’s gathering where more than 350 teens and guests from nine countries – Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Georgia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Israel, and the U.S. – spent four days exploring our Jewish identities, participating in a multitude of educational programs, and electing the new teen presidents of AJT
