Google Destinations, Now for Desktop | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Google launched the "plan a trip" feature for mobile phones back in March and now it's available in the regular desktop interface, as well. "Destinations on Google helps you discover and plan your next vacation, right from Google Search," informed Google. Search for a continent, a country or state you'd like to visit and the Knowledge Graph card has a "plan a trip" section which includes a travel guide, information about hotels and upcoming events.

JECC's Jewish Holiday Snapshots

JECC's Jewish Holiday Snapshots | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

"Jewish Holiday Snapshots" offers quick overviews (snapshots) of Jewish holidays. Using the drop down menus, above, take a wide-angle look at the bigger ideas, or zoom in for a close-up to learn about common practices. Currently (September, 2016) only Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur information is posted, but if the site proves useful, other holidays will be filled in. The JECC built "Jewish Holiday Snapshots" especially for early childhood teachers who are looking for an adult-oriented overview as they prepare learning experiences for their young students. However, the site's information and resources are certainly applicable to others who want to click and learn. EC educators (and interested others) are invited to explore the pages whenever is convenient - at home, while involved in classroom prep, or while sitting in a carpool line. Directors may wish to devote part of a staff meeting to individual and/or small group learning with "Snapshots," with the caveat that those around the table also share personal experiences, understandings and questions.

Campus Week: Going Back to School? Here’s How To Fight the Israel Haters

Campus Week: Going Back to School? Here’s How To Fight the Israel Haters | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
A few months ago, as the academic year was slouching to an end, I wrote in these pages to encourage the not-yet-graduated to stand up and fight anti-Israel sentiment on college campuses. The piece must have struck a nerve, as several readers, most of them parents of students or students-to-be, wrote and urged me to follow up my note with another, more practical one that advised those on the quad what to do when they come face-to-face with the haters. I demurred, in part because the question is more complex than the season, with its beach days and its sandy distractions, permits, and in part because I felt that enough fine organizations were already fighting the good fight on the ground. Now that summer’s almost over, however, and minivans are again being saddled with stuff and charging toward dorm rooms everywhere, it’s time to wrestle with the question once again.

What’s New in the Sefaria Library?

What’s New in the Sefaria Library? | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
It's been a busy few months at Sefaria. We reworked our Megillat Taanit to more clearly show the monthly structure, and added Solomon Zeitlin's English translation of the older part of the text. We also added Otzar Midrashim, a wonderful collection containing many tens of the smaller midrashim. We replaced our main Hebrew Mishnah text entirely with a newly digitized version of…

Tools for Elul: EdTech to Foster Deeper Student Reflection | DigitalJLearning Network

Tools for Elul: EdTech to Foster Deeper Student Reflection | DigitalJLearning Network | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

Elul, the month just before the High Holidays, is traditionally a time for reflection and introspection. This year, with Rosh Hashanah not arriving until October, we have the unusual occurrence of Elul happening during September and coinciding with the beginning of the school year. Teachers can take advantage of this opportunity and teach about the importance of reflection during Elul and before the High Holidays. Working on reflections during Elul will help students to better understand themselves as well as the meaning of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Reflections can also contribute to creating a deeper High Holiday experience. These EdTech tools provide various ways for learners to be creative while engaging in the act of reflection.

Partnering Across Divides to Promote Social Cohesion and Strengthen Israel

Partnering Across Divides to Promote Social Cohesion and Strengthen Israel | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Currently completing the second of a five year pilot, the initiative already constitutes a community of some 70 nonprofits that have completed 20 twinning projects and one regional nonprofit forum this year alone. Sustainable partnerships are nurtured between nonprofits that have never before cooperated and traditionally serve different communities. These are grounded on three principles: A common recognition of the value of the citizenship all Israelis share; respect for the diversity that characterizes Israeli society and; a shared appreciation that working together across divides for a fairer society is a moral imperative and critical for Israel’s long-term success.

Just a few of the ways that you can have students use their phones includes recording short videos to use as blog posts, capturing highlights of a field trip, or recording an interview with an elder as part of a local history project. Machine learning's next trick is generating videos from photos

Researchers from MIT attempting to solve this problem have come up with some very impressive results, using specially trained neural networks to turn images into videos and getting the computer to essentially predict what happens next. Their model has plenty of limitations — the videos are seconds long, tiny, and often nightmarish — but it’s still an impressive feat of machine imagination, and another step toward computers that understand the world a little more like humans.

I Refuse To Let Insane Day School Tuition Price My Kids Out of Orthodoxy

I Refuse To Let Insane Day School Tuition Price My Kids Out of Orthodoxy | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
We have a choice as Jewish people: acknowledge that it’s possible to be Orthodox outside of participating in the yeshiva day school system or admit that there is a growing number of Jewish families being priced out of schools, and therefore, Orthodoxy, and figure out a way to deal with it.

There have been countless conversations about making day school more affordable in the last decade, but as indicated by this new spreadsheet, they have done little to alleviate the problem facing thousands of American Jewish parents. Many will say (and have already said) that if our family values Judaism, we will find a way. But until they figure out how to get blood from a stone, I’ll be spending my time planning our secular and Judaic homeschool curriculum.
