Does Orthodox Explosion Signal Doom For Conservative And Reform?

Does Orthodox Explosion Signal Doom For Conservative And Reform? | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
The demographic trends we described are already in motion and cannot be changed overnight. The American Jewish community is entering a transitional period, and in particular the Conservative and Reform movements are facing a rocky few decades that will have implications for many of the major Jewish communal institutions. We hope that a dose of hardnosed realism will motivate committed action so that we get through this period with our feet on the right path.

MOFET JTEC - The Student Voice in Designing a Jewish Studies High School Curriculum: A Case Study

MOFET JTEC - The Student Voice in Designing a Jewish Studies High School Curriculum: A Case Study | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
In January 2012, a team of curriculum specialists based at Bar Ilan University in Israel were approached by a Jewish day school in Australia to design a new Jewish Studies curriculum for its school. The mandate was to design a curriculum model from first-steps that would form the basis for the new curriculum.

This article demonstrates how combining elements of Fullan's ideas about school partnerships with Schwab's 'commonplaces' concepts can best meet the needs of the school's specific population and ethos. The role of student voice is shown to be critical in curriculum deliberations and decision making. Assumptions made by teachers about what students would want to learn proved, in a number of instances, inaccurate. Our research seems to indicate that the student "commonplace" voice within the design of a new curriculum should be given more consideration in the curriculum design process.

MOFET JTEC - A ‘Dybbuk Model’ for Holocaust Pedagogy: The Case of the Distribution of Ka-Tzetnik’s Books

MOFET JTEC - A ‘Dybbuk Model’ for Holocaust Pedagogy: The Case of the Distribution of Ka-Tzetnik’s Books | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Between 1990 and 2001, the Israeli Ministry of Education freely distributed to students countless copies of the books written by Holocaust author Ka-Tzetnik. This educational project has never been researched and, despite its magnitude and uniqueness, it has abruptly disappeared from public awareness as if it had never been carried out. The motivations that stand behind this initiative and the lessons it teaches about Holocaust pedagogy are the focus of this article.

The article examines the influence of political and psychological dimensions in Holocaust pedagogy on the choice of a curriculum. It ultimately offers a close analysis of the conduct of the protagonists of this educational affair and it gives rise to a “dybbuk model” for Holocaust pedagogy. This model offers new insights into Holocaust memory in general.

A Day School Educator’s Confession

A Day School Educator’s Confession | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
But have we teachers been so careful? Have we been so intentional? Given this sense of holy work, this urgency, I arrive at Yom Kippur each year with a heavy heart. Woe, how I have been hasty and angry and full of excuses (tired)! I have not approached each moment with the dedication and mindfulness that it deserves. I have sinned.

And so, I offer up to my students, this vidui, this confession. Words that cannot begin to make up for the ways that I have hurt and harmed.

MOFET JTEC - “Corresponding with the Professor”: A Didactic Tool for Fostering Students’ Ability to Identify Scholastic Difficulties and Ways of Coping with Them

MOFET JTEC - “Corresponding with the Professor”: A Didactic Tool for Fostering Students’ Ability to Identify Scholastic Difficulties and Ways of Coping with Them | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
During their school years, students encounter difficulties of various types from both content-related and emotional aspects. Often, when asked directly about their learning difficulties, students struggle to express these difficulties explicitly and clearly; as a result, teachers find it a challenge to provide them with a suitable and satisfactory response. In order to help students express their scholastic difficulties, particularly cognitive and emotional ones, and foster their ability to chart out courses of action for coping with these difficulties, we have developed a tool we call “Corresponding with the Professor”. Specifically, this involves writing a letter to an imaginary Professor which contains a description of a difficulty (or difficulties) followed by writing a detailed letter of response from the Professor (to oneself actually) that offers suggestions and recommendations aimed at possible ways of coping with the difficulty (or difficulties). In developing this tool, we have relied on research literature related to writing a “letter to myself”. In this paper, we shall present the tool and its theoretical basis.

Students will analyze the artwork and use it as inspiration to write a scene dramatizing the moment. The artwork and writing pieces will then be collated into an e-book.
