There is a Price to Pay for Having a Price to Pay: Where Should Innovation Live in the Jewish Day School Ecosystem? | Innovation Alley

There is a Price to Pay for Having a Price to Pay: Where Should Innovation Live in the Jewish Day School Ecosystem? | Innovation Alley | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
As Prizmah contemplates its role in this work moving forward, here are some of the guiding questions we’ll be contemplating:
Does the world need another network (reshet) for “innovation” or would a “network of networks” be more appropriate?
How can we inspire a field wide culture of meaningful sharing?
What really is “thought leadership” and does it matter?
Where will new ideas come from?  Who is doing R&D?  Who is funding it?

MOFET JTEC - Can Playing with Junk Lead to Creativity and Innovation?

MOFET JTEC - Can Playing with Junk Lead to Creativity and Innovation? | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
I would argue that Israel’s transformation from a dusty, backwater in a tiny corner of the Mediterranean to a high-tech empire began on a small socialist community situated halfway between Tiberias and Jericho when in the 1950’s, on Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu, a young German immigrant developed a unique educational approach for her kindergarten.

At this time, Sde Eliyahu was a community that was poor on financial resources but rich in ideology. Malka Haas, Sde Eliyahu’s young kindergarten teacher, was faced with equipping the Kibbutz’s first kindergarten with a very small budget. So she came up with a creative solution: Instead of purchasing expensive, mass-produced toys, Haas appropriated objects from the daily life of Kibbutz members for play purposes.

Anniversary of an Image

Anniversary of an Image | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

In Rubinger’s photo, the emphasis is the exact opposite; what is stressed is not action but a sudden inaction. As Yossi Klein Halevi put it, the photo is stirring precisely because “at their moment of triumph, the conquerors are themselves conquered.” After achieving the most famous Jewish military victory in 2,000 years—becoming the first Jewish soldiers to hold Jerusalem since Bar Kochba’s rebellion—the soldiers stand still before the locus of Jewish longing. They suddenly seem, to paraphrase Milton Himmelfarb’s felicitous phrase, not actors but rather acted upon. Yitzchak Yifat seems awestruck at being a thoroughly ordinary person caught up in things great and inexplicable.

Finding, Evaluating, and Citing Information Sources The academic research project is a standard feature of every student’s life at Cornell. Consequently, for every student, research projects raise important questions, such as: Where do you find the information you need for your research? How do you find it? How do you evaluate and manage that information once you find it?

MOFET JTEC - To Honor Slain Sons, Families Send 1000s of Purim Gifts to Diaspora | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Israelis departing Ben-Gurion International Airport last week delivered 2,500 Purim gift bags to Jews around the world as part of a project in memory of Gil-ad Shaer, Naftali Fraenkel and Eyal Yifrach. The three Israeli teenage boys were kidnapped and murdered by Palestinian terrorists as they headed home from their West Bank yeshiva in June 2014. The project, The Jewish Connection, is an initiative of a non-profit organization founded by the boys’ parents to further and strengthen the international Jewish solidarity demonstrated during the weeks between the boys’ kidnapping and discovery of their bodies.

MOFET JTEC - White Fire: The Power of Jewish Learning through the Arts

MOFET JTEC - White Fire: The Power of Jewish Learning through the Arts | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
This notion of multiplicity of meaning is the core inspiration of the Jewish Artists’ Laboratory of the Midwest. The lab is a network of professional Jewish artists in six cities in the Midwest – Milwaukee, Madison, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Chicago, and Cleveland – now in its sixth year. In each city, a group meets twice monthly to study a theme related to Jewish life, and to create works of art for an annual exhibit/showcase based on their study. The artists include painters, printmakers, sculptors, fabric artists, musicians, poets, playwrights, choreographers, mixed media artists, photographers, and more.

The Laboratory offers us two tremendous opportunities in one: 1) It is a way to engage Jewish artists in learning that can strengthen their identities, and create a community of Jewish artists, and, 2) It is a way of bringing Jewish expression to the community at large through exhibits and ancillary programs and activities.

The factory model of traditional education works well enough for just enough kids, but the number of students who bristle at the industrialized standards of schooling is broaching a critical mass. Our Blended Jewish appeals to the student who would like to accelerate their learning as well as the student who might need more time to better comprehend a concept. We appeal to the student who would like to have greater control over their time and their routine. We also appeal to the student who is an unconventional learner for whom the traditional classroom just doesn’t inspire.

MOFET JTEC - Adult Education: A New Frontier in the Jewish Day School Movement?

MOFET JTEC - Adult Education: A New Frontier in the Jewish Day School Movement? | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Day Schools are confronted with a particularly daunting mission. In addition to providing a rigorous dual education, they work indefatigably to inspire students religiously. At times, this mission feels Sisyphean. Our children are saturated in modern culture. Too often, turning their attention toward a Torah lifestyle is a terrifyingly daunting task. Even when our efforts appear to meet with success, students often regress to the mean. Moreover, despite their remarkable commitment to day school education, not all parents are positioned to inspire religious growth in their children. Indeed, any honest educator will confirm that this is one of the greatest challenges confronting Modern Orthodoxy. It follows, then, that to best inspire our students, we must inspire our families and communities. To thrive religiously, our children must inhabit spiritually nurturing ecosystems. In a word, schools have begun to invest in community education because it is critical to the success of their mission of educating children.
