The Educator's Guide to Copyright, Fair Use, and Creative Commons

The Educator's Guide to Copyright, Fair Use, and Creative Commons | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

Dr. Pyrate's curator insight, May 4, 3:33 PM

Don't get me wrong: I'm a pyrate. I believe in open sourcing. I also understand the paradox in the Anglophone educational and academic ideologies that "you are a valuable, unique intellectual individual with something important to say; and you mean NOTHING, and we won't listen to you until you have a whole bunch of intellectual allies to back you up, and you can prove it."

So...these are things we have to keep an eye on.

Kym Reinstadler, SCN Feature Writer's curator insight, May 4, 6:46 PM

Just because you find it on Google doesn’t mean you can duplicate it online for free. It may be illegal to republish even with attribution that includes a link to the original source. Classroom uses of copyrighted material may be protected under the Fair Use provision, but educators still have to know copyright law, especially if their students blog. No copyright holder is going to take away a blogger’s birthday for posting music or an image he or she didn’t actually own or have permission to use. When a copyright claim is made against material posted on line, the offending post is usually just muted or taken down. But kids need to learn proper practices for handling protected material at school from adults who know the nuances. This article will help.

Here is a great tip for adding music to your Google Slides Presentation.

Candi Whitman's curator insight, April 27, 4:41 PM

Music always enhances.   Never put too much information on a slide.  That's what talking is for, and I like to keep them up only 10-15 seconds so you keep people's interest.

Pippa Davies @PippaDavies 's curator insight, May 1, 11:34 AM

40 Percent Rise This Year in Global Immigration to Israel, Report Shows

40 Percent Rise This Year in Global Immigration to Israel, Report Shows | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
A new report shows that Jewish immigration to Israel from around the world rose more than 40 percent in the first three months of 2015, the UK’s Guardian reported on Sunday. A total of 6,499 Jews arrived in Israel between January and March of this year, according to an interim report by the Jewish Agency for Israel. Beth Dichter's curator insight, March 5, 6:09 AM

Jackie Gerstein has created a new website that explores the Maker Movement. If this is an area that you would like to explore you will find 10 areas that you can explore:

* Paper Circuits

* Squishy Cirtuits

* Bare Conductive Paint

* Sew Electrics

* Operation Game

* Toy Take Apart

* Soldering Projects

* LittleBits

* Makey Makey

* Hummingbird Robotics

Each of these areas leads to a webpage and the ones I checked out included a number of videos to help you understand the topic as well as some documentation and additional resources.

She also includes a brief video that helps you understand what the Maker Movement is (and you hear from learners involved in a number of projects). In addition there is a ThingLink (based on the image above) that provides  links to additional resources.

The Maker Movement provides learners with opportunities to create something that is new to them. It is authentic learning and learners will go through iterations as they work through the process, and potentially experience failure that will help them become successful.

Dr. Laura Sheneman's curator insight, March 5, 9:21 AM

Librarians - Makerspaces can be a good fit for your library.

James Walker's curator insight, March 6, 9:40 AM

Many school have closed down the shop classes to focus on testing prep. The maker movement is now revitalizing the shop class.
