The Maker Movement & Jewish EdTech

The Maker Movement & Jewish EdTech | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
In a Jewish school environment, our creations, inventions, and ideas should be guided by our Jewish values. Jewish learning has a strong and long pedagogic history with methodologies to learn Jewish texts that have been utilized for generations. The Maker movement does not advocate an abolishment of those traditional methods, but rather an incorporation of new tools and outcomes for Judaic learning. Every Jewish educator dreams for his or her students to grasp the Torah in new and unique ways and incorporate this meaningful learning into their everyday life. At my school, we have begun to integrate Making into our Judaic Studies curriculum so that students can create more than just summative projects, but rather projects of exploration based on their Jewish ideals.

Israel Museum Rםצשמ coin exhibit shows a daughter’s love is worth more than gold

Israel Museum Rםצשמ coin exhibit shows a daughter’s love is worth more than gold | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Now this fit-for-a-king collection can be seen by the general public in the Israel Museum’s exhibit “Faces of Power,” temporarily on view in the Archaeology Wing.

The exhibit contains the portraits of 40 Roman emperors — and three usurpers — as well as the likenesses of 13 women who were members of the imperial family.

“These coins enable us to tell the story of the Roman gold currency for a period of more than 300 years, from the end of the first century BCE to the beginning of the fourth century CE,” writes Dr. Haim Gitler, the Tamar and Teddy Kollek chief curator of Archaeology and curator of Numismatics, in an impressive book of scholarly essays which accompanies the exhibit.

Keeping the Faith: Resilience in the Jewish Tradition

Keeping the Faith: Resilience in the Jewish Tradition | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
I’m thrilled to introduce Hashivenu, a new podcast that highlights resilience practices embedded in Jewish teaching and Jewish living. To better understand the terrain I’m exploring in Hashivenu, let me take a step back and frame the Jewish idea of resilience. The American Psychological Association defines resilience as “the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats and even significant sources of stress.” Harvard University psychologist George Vaillant suggests that resilience can be understood as a “twig with a fresh, green living core” that springs back and continues to grow after encountering pressure.

Old Models of Jewish Legacy Institutions No Longer Working, Experts Say

Old Models of Jewish Legacy Institutions No Longer Working, Experts Say | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
The research and statistics are in, and the message to Jewish legacy organizations – those longstanding community institutions that historically have held fast to the status quo – is loud and clear: To be viable into the 21st century, the template must change.

Synagogues, Jewish federations and other organizations are already facing a perfect storm of societal shifts as the sheer number of non-Orthodox Jews continues to plummet and millennials trend toward a new paradigm of customization and personalization.

Tackling Tuition with Local Jewish Day Schools

Tackling Tuition with Local Jewish Day Schools | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Education has been a cornerstone of Jewish life for millennia, and American Jewry’s increasing focus on affordable day school tuition reflects that priority. On the one hand, there is huge emphasis on the importance of a day school education for the future of the Jewish community. School leaders stress to parents that the value of a good dual-curriculum is well worth the expense. On the other hand, many parents told Kol HaBirah that the price tag can create a financial burden that disrupts family life, impacts family-planning decisions, or makes it harder to donate to synagogues and other communal institutions.

One local parent, who is also a Jewish day school teacher, summarized this tension in a nutshell: “As a parent, tuition is too high. As a teacher, it’s not high enough.”

Leaving Home to Find Home

Leaving Home to Find Home | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
What if every synagogue and Jewish community required some form of immersive Jewish journey for young people as a core part of its educational framework?

What if every Jewish community had a comprehensive living and learning partnership with a wide range of immersive Jewish summer programs that complemented its own living and learning experiences?

As a Jewish educator, parent and now executive director of a Jewish summer camp, I stand ready to partner more extensively with the leaders of our congregations and Jewish communities to ensure that more of our young people have the experience of better knowing themselves and their Judaism through encounters on journeys. I know fellow camp leaders share my enthusiasm and commitment.

Mosaic floor of 1,500-year-old 'boutique hotel' found in Jerusalem

Mosaic floor of 1,500-year-old 'boutique hotel' found in Jerusalem | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
While digging to lay a cable network by the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem's Old City, workers uncovered an intact mosaic with Greek writing on what seems to have been the floor of an ancient version of boutique hotel 1,500 years ago.
The writing reads: "In the time of our most pious emperor Flavius Justinian, also this entire building Constantine the most God-loving priest and abbot, established and raised, in the 14th indiction," according to Leah Di Segni, of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, an expert on ancient Greek inscriptions.

Inside the Hagia Sophia, which Emperor Justinian also had built, starting in the very first year of his reign, in Istanbul, Turkey. Murad Sezer, AP
"'Indiction' is an ancient method of counting years, for taxation purposes. Based on historical sources, the mosaic can be dated to the year 550 or 551 C.E.," Di Segni says.

Augmented Reality in Jewish Day Schools

Augmented Reality in Jewish Day Schools | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
This study has stressed the ways in which augmented reality tools can be used by teachers and students to enhance Jewish learning. We have focused on the Aurasma app since it is commonly used by educators. There are many AR apps that teach specific areas in general education, or play games. Publishers have used scannable images to add depth to their publications. Most significantly, businesses have driven up sales with AR driven campaigns. In most cases educational applications are more of an afterthought for companies aiming at the lucrative business market, and so we should not be surprised that no one has approached the generation of AR with a mindset of what would best suit an educational setting.

Perhaps the most important piece of PBL is trust. You need trust to be willing to withstand discomfort, to try and to fail, and to develop resilience. Every relationship, even with yourself, is predicated on some measure of trust.

PBL stands for project-based or passion-based learning. Maybe it should stand for Passion-Based Living.

Summertime is for Joyous Judaism

Summertime is for Joyous Judaism | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

Joyous Judaism. Yes, I want my kids to unplug, gain independence, and learn to swim but I really want them to spend their summers tending to a love that will root itself in their consciousness, and grow each summer, nurturing a lifelong relationship with their faith. I am certain that this begins at Jewish camp where the values of the Jewish people are celebrated: Menschlicheit, eretz Yisrael, kavod, kehillah and tzedakah. Certainly a tall order and one best done away from the distractions of daily life, in a kind of bubble, which is exactly what Eisner calls itself.
