MOFET JTEC - Academic – Pedagogic Seminar for European Jewish Educators

The Herzog College in The Etzion Bloc invites Jewish teachers and school principals from all over Europe to participate in our summer seminar in Vienna on July 16-24, 2017. This seminar is the first step in implementing our broad vision creating an academic credited program for Diaspora teachers. The seminar is aimed at enriching the participants' toolbox in teaching Judaism and pedagogy. Academic credits will be awarded to seminar participants who complete course requirements. The seminar will be held at Maria – Theresia's Castle in English and French as well as in Ivrit subject to demand.

MOFET JTEC - US Holocaust Museum Releases First 2 Volumes of Encyclopedia of Nazi Camps, Ghettos

The first two volumes of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s comprehensive record of Nazi-established persecution sites are now available. The first two volumes of the Museum’s “Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, 1933-1945,” are now freely accessible in their entirety on the Museum’s website, the museum announced. Printed editions of the Encyclopedia will still be offered through the publisher, Indiana University Press. Together, the two volumes cover more than 2,200 sites, many of which are described nowhere else in English.

The volumes are available exactly as they appear in book form but are searchable PDF files.

MOFET JTEC - To Include or Not to Include—This Is the Question: Attitudes of Inclusive Teachers toward the Inclusion of Pupils with Intellectual Disabilities in Elementary Schools

Numerous studies have emphasized the relationship between success of policies of inclusion and acceptance and accommodation of students with intellectual disabilities in mainstream settings and teachers’ positive attitudes toward them. Using semi-structured interviews and interpretive and constructivist strategies, the present study qualitatively analyzes the attitudes of 40 inclusive teachers regarding the inclusion of pupils with intellectual disabilities in mainstream elementary school settings in Israel.

MOFET JTEC - Adapting the Jewish Spiritual Practice of Mussar to Develop Business Students’ Character

Business ethics educators have been encouraged to cultivate students’ character, but have received meager instructions for doing so. Additionally, there has been insufficient focus on equipping students with the tools they need to foster their ethical development after completing our courses. In this paper, it is argued that the Jewish spiritual practice of Mussar, whose premise is that individuals can become better versions of themselves by repairing their character traits, can inform business ethics instruction.

After presenting the tenets and historical background of Mussar, we provide specific information that will enable business ethics instructors to adapt its tools and techniques in order to put their students on a personalized path of lifelong character improvement.

MOFET JTEC - Parenting: From Tamagotchi to Social Media

In my opinion, parenting in the age of technology and social media requires the same basic moral stance that parenting in the age of TV required – the same as parenting in the age of artificial intelligence will require. I believe it starts with asking. “What makes sense, for what purpose, and what kind of kids do we want as a result?” I think 3 basic ideas still stand for parenting in the age of technology.

MOFET JTEC - The Global Citizenship Education Gap: Teacher Perceptions of the Relationship Between Global Citizenship Education and Students’ Socio-Economic Status

The present study examined Israeli secondary school teachers' perceptions of global citizenship education (GCE), concentrating on the socio-economic makeup of the schools' population. The study illuminates how teachers' perceptions of their students' mobility and the imagined futures that teachers attribute to their students may shape teaching. The study involves in-depth, semi-structured interviews with fifteen Israeli teachers at schools catering to student populations of various socio-economic backgrounds within the public, secular Jewish school sector. The study provides evidence of a GCE gap involving students, schools, and teachers, shedding light on this gap's possible consequences. Policy implications of the GCE gap and future research trajectories are introduced and discussed.

MOFET JTEC - Tech for Learning Initiative: Summer Institute

The Jewish Education Project is inviting teams of educators from Tri-State area middle and high schools to join us for a 3 day Summer Institute (August 14 -16, 2017). Through the Tech for Learning Initiative, supported by the Jim Joseph Foundation, school teams will work and learn together over several days in August. We will identify key challenges and opportunities that drive technology use, and the processes to implement educational technology that helps address them. We will also explore pedagogic approaches and theories behind integrating technology with learning. We’ll learn from each other and from leading experts in the field, and each team will create a plan for piloting new technology projects in their school. After completing the Summer Institute, schools will be eligible to submit applications for microgrants of up to $5,000 to help put their plans into action.

MOFET JTEC - Training Israeli Shlichim and Day Camp Directors – Together

In order to the address the discrepancy between expectation and reality of the day camp setting, JCC Association of North America established Israel Up Close in 2013. This has allowed 51 day camp directors to attend the shlichim training. Not only do they gain insight into how the shlichim are prepared, but they offer valuable resources into the discourse about day camp.

A fifth cohort recently wrapped up, in which 10 day camp directors who had not participated in the training seminar previously, were able to attend through generous grants from JCC Association of North America. The funding was made possible through the Lenny Rubin Israel Education Fund, named for a former JCC Association professional who had a tremendous passion for Israel.

In the past seven months alone, 16 of these congregations have been in a CoP learning together to reimagine congregational education for families with children in grades K-7. Through the URJ Reimagining Congregational Education CoP, congregations are working to establish a new vision of education and engagement and explore alternative models of congregational education by learning both from each other and from expert practitioners. Through this work, congregations learn skills that help them think intentionally about all areas of congregational life.

Jewish Education Innovation Challenge (JEIC) convened nearly 100 Jewish educators and community leaders from across North America on May 17-18, 2017 to participate in its 5th annual Innovators Retreat – Oases of Change – at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston. The JEIC Innovators Retreat showcased 11 revolutionary ideas in Jewish day school education and opened them up for feedback from top educators, funders and social entrepreneurs in the field. These new models, grantees of the JEICs Day School Educators’ Challenge and the ten designers currently participating in HaKaveret: JEIC Team Challenge.

MOFET JTEC - ‘I Wish They Had Birthright for Adults!’: The Effect of Birthright Israel on Jewish Parents’ Interest in Visiting Israel

This study is the first to systematically analyze the program’s impact on such parents. Based on semi-structured interviews of Birthright Israel parents and on pre-trip and post-trip surveys of more than 1,500 parents, this paper shows that, for Jewish parents, the primary impact of Birthright Israel is an increased interest in visiting Israel and a reduced concern about the safety of Israel travel. The effect of the program was most pronounced for parents who had never been to Israel. Parental interest in trips like Birthright Israel presents an opportunity to reach the generation of American Jews during midlife in ways not previously considered.

MOFET JTEC - Teaching the Holocaust Through Film


Feature films are one of the most powerful tools in a history teacher's arsenal and also one of the most misused. Many of the films shown by teachers are appropriate for teaching content and also serve to engage students. Some of the most popular films used by teachers are Glory (1989), Dances with Wolves (1990), Saving Private Ryan (1998), and All Quiet on the Western Front (1979). One film that has been very popular in classes is Schindler's List (1993). In this article, I discuss appropriate criteria for choosing films for teaching about the Holocaust, and suggest other films that are appropriate and effective pedagogical tools. Due to space, the discussion in this article is limited to Hollywood "feature" films, though documentary films are also valuable.

This is why it was so exciting to me to see these dispositions in action in the fourth grade class at Boston’s Jewish Community Day School when I visited there last month. The fourth grade teachers, Ayelet Lipton and Michelle Janoschek, are using the Pedagogy of Partnership, an approach to teaching and learning, developed by Dr. Orit Kent and Allison Cook, that focuses on deepening students’ intellectual, ethical and spiritual engagement with texts, teachers and peers.

Leshomra is a two-year-old Israeli organization that helps plant gardens at nursery schools, kindergartens, schools, and community centers in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods in an attempt to connect children in a tactile way to nature and how things grow. It aims to build environmental awareness and green practices from the bottom, through a real understanding of Haredi culture and how best to relate to people in that community.

MOFET JTEC - “That Was the Most Myself I’ve Ever Been” – Teens Reflecting on New Models of Summer Programming

Against this backdrop, the New York Jewish Teen Initiative was launched in 2014. This ambitious effort to create new models of summer programing for Jewish teens, and to increase the numbers participating in Jewish experiences, is a partnership between UJA Federation of New York and the Jim Joseph Foundation within the framework of the Jewish Teen Education and Engagement Funder Collaborative, which includes national and local funders from ten communities. The Jewish Education Project serves as lead operator of the Initiative, which is being evaluated by a team from Rosov Consulting. Ahead of a third summer of programming, it is appropriate to take stock of what we’ve learned so far. MOFET JTEC - HaYidion - Prizmah's Journal of Jewish Education: Summer Homework

The articles in this issue begin with a recognition of the difference and legitimacy of summer experiences, their necessity for the personal, social and spiritual development of children. Authors accept the notion that children need time away from school, not merely as “downtime” but as an opportunity to have experiences that will be meaningful and important to them for their entire lives. They need to swim, climb trees, play hours of soccer, spend time with friends and make new ones, to improvise, cope with disappointment and exercise some control over their lives. All of the authors acknowledge that there is value in not assigning summer homework.

And yet, at the same time, day schools do not conceive of themselves as artificial boxes that students enter in September and step out of in June. They are rather microcosms, model worlds that students are meant to take with them throughout the year and throughout their lives. Parents send children to day school in the hope that the school will help shape them into people who are ethically alert, intellectually curious, disposed toward active participation in Jewish life and community. Assignments are a way for the school to ensure a continuity between the ethical and intellectual life at school and the students’ lives beyond campus.

One response has been the launch of Fast-Track, a one-year programme piloted this year among 20 sixth-formers. It involved intensive weekend sessions on Israeli history, culture, politics and society as well as a residential seminar in Israel. “It was a deliberate attempt to raise the intellectual ante,” says Michael Wegier, UJIA chief executive, “to take a cadre of people and work with them through all the deep, complex and inspirational elements of Israel.
