Why I live in Israel

Some people come here because of Abraham’s mission. Others are inspired by Herzl’s words, or the Holocaust’s warning, or the victories of the Maccabees and the IDF.

I live here because I want to be like that little girl by the river, who sowed the seeds of the future in a simple moment of love. I want to shape our national future as I care for my children, write my stories, and smile at strangers in the street. That, for me, is what life in Israel is all about.

"I am Salonica," explained Rena Molcho to our group of 30 ROIers and Connection Point participants, eight talented Israelis well-known in the music industry (among them, Berry Sakharof, Ehud Banai and Shai Tzabari), and a team of ten educators from the Jerusalem Secular Yeshiva. Molcho is a historian. She led one of the tours and a Jewish history session during the ROI Thessoloniki Delegation in mid December, 2016. The daughter of Holocaust survivors, Molcho was one of the first Jewish children born in Thessaloniki, Greece (also known as Salonica), after WWII. She can trace generations of her family's roots in the city; they've been there since the Spanish Inquisition.

These are questions that I struggle with as an educator, a tefillah leader, and a Jew. As a participant, I hope to be moved by worship experiences. As a leader, I hope to make the experience meaningful. As an educator, I want students to have a positive Jewish experience that inspires them - to lead, to learn and to live Jewishly. How can we make the time students spend in religious school tefillah meaningful and memorable, and how can it be used to develop relationships and build community?

There are elements inherent in a service that do engage children. Children love to talk, to sing, to move, and to listen to stories. If we can frame the tefillah with these concepts, perhaps we can create a more engaging prayer experience. If we can infuse each element of the service with meaning, taking the time to explain and explore what we do and why we do it, we have the potential of making not only religious school tefillah more engaging, but also every service they attend for the rest of their lives.

Today, about a third of Masa Israel Journey’s twelve thousand participants are older than 21. Most of this population are post-college and pre-family; in today’s world, what has been coined “emerging adults.” While this change alone is interesting, the implications of this change are especially intriguing and provocative for Masa and for community partners interested in effectively engaging this demographic group. A team from Rosov Consulting working together with Masa Israel Journey to study the outcomes produced by the different programs for which Masa provides a platform. Having completed a retrospective study of Masa alumni who participated in programs between 2005 and 2014, we have also been studying, in real time, a cohort who participated in Masa programs between July 2014 and June 2015, and who are now between six and twelve months out of the program.

The holiday of Tu Bishvat begins this year on Friday evening, February 10th. As the Jewish holiday most closely connected to the environment and the natural world, Tu Bishvat provides a great opportunity for teachers to include earth and environmental science in their curriculum. This year, we were inspired by Jewish texts about the natural world. For each text, we’ve taken out a particular topic you can focus on in your classroom and provided educational technology resources that can help your students reach their learning goals. Our hope is that after using these tools and developing a stronger understanding of Earth, your students will have a more meaningful Tu Bishvat.

At a recent conference, “Happiness Hacks: Feel Good, Do Good and Stop Obsessing about Jewish Identity”, the Jewish Education Project partnered with the Lippman Kanfer Foundation to teach more than 400 educators and lay leaders how to integrate positive psychology into their curricula. The conference included a lecture by renowned Israeli positive psychologist Dan Ariely and group exercises in “laughter yoga,” a series of exercises that induce laughter to promote healing. “In the past, the purpose of Jewish education was to [allow students to] fully participate in American life without giving up their Jewish identity — now, that’s not enough,” said Aryeh Ben David, founder of Ayeka, a Jerusalem-based nonprofit that focuses on “soulful” Jewish education — teaching Jewish subjects with more “personal meaning and impact.” “Teens today don’t need a classroom to access information — they can get anything they want to know online,” said Ben David in a phone interview. This changes the need for school “in a profound way.” “Jewish education needs to become a vehicle to enhance students’ lives, rather than just transmit content.” Ayeka is currently working with four schools in the U.S. to train Jewish educators in “soulful education.”

Immigrant and second generation youth face distinct challenges adapting to school environments in the host society. Young people’s popularity is often influenced by style-based subcultures. This research investigates how students from diverse ethnic and linguistic backgrounds in Israel, a multi-ethnic society with a large proportion of immigrant youth, adopt subcultural identities, and the effects this has on popularity attainment. This study makes use of a nationally representative quantitative survey of Hebrew instructed high schools. Results are analyzed through Structural Equations Modeling.

Following the almost worldwide implementation of policies giving all students – including those with special education needs – the right to learn within the general education system, there has been a sharp increase in the number of inclusion assistants (IA). IAs provide special-needs students one-to-one accompaniment, allowing them to function in the general education classroom and reducing the onus on the classroom teacher in such cases. Unfortunately, many, if not most, of IAs enter the system without suitable training or special qualifications and often neither they nor the teachers have a clear idea of how they should fulfill their role. This exploratory study used a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews to identify and compare how 30 classroom teachers and IAs define the IA’s role. It also studied how eight IAs changed their perception of their roles after attending an IA training course and what the implications of such courses may be.

Between May 2015 through the end of 2016, 440 couples from eight cities have participated in Honeymoon Israel. In 2017, HMI’s growth will bring 520 couples from ten cities on immersive trips to Israel. On average, three couples are applying for every spot available. While the trips are open to Jewish as well as interfaith couples, as we have come to learn, these designations are not as clear-cut as they may seem. Some Jewish couples are comprised of partners who are Jews by choice. And increasingly we are learning that partners who identify as Jewish may themselves have grown up in an interfaith home. While all couples value the experience, overall it seems clear that the outcomes we describe below are more pronounced for interfaith couples.

Confused? I am certainly confused. This whole exercise is not aimed at convincing you that supporting the minimum wage is the Jewish thing to do, or that supporting the relocation of the US embassy to Jerusalem is the Jewish thing to do. It is aimed at raising the possibility that our tendency to politicize Jewishness is not because Judaism is a certain formulation of political beliefs – but rather because our proficiency in Jewishness is lacking. Because instead of looking for ways to make Trump Jews and Obama Jews dwellers of the same Jewish tent – like blue-eyed and brown-eyed Jews – we define Jewishness in political terms and hence force separation on them.

In the mid-1990s, a few dozen intrepid high school students enrolled in what were likely the first fully online high school courses. Fast forward twenty years later. It’s hard to think of students who take online courses as educational pioneers anymore. Taking an online course to fill a Biology, Math, or even Talmud credit seems run of the mill. After all, adults enroll in online courses all the time—to pass the DMV requirements, to learn how to use that new software for work, or to study Renaissance poetry in a MOOC. It’s only commonsensical that schools would harness this mode of teaching as well.

In fact, over 2.2 million K-12 school students enroll in online courses annually. The vast majority of the students come from the public system, but hundreds of thousands of students from private and charter schools also enroll. Jewish day schools sign up their students as well, though on a smaller scale. While 4% of all American public school students take an online course, less than 1%t of Jewish day school students enroll in an online course for either General or Jewish Studies. Jewish day schools began experimenting with online learning less than a decade ago, and at this point, several thousand Jewish day school students participate in online learning courses every year. This number is steadily growing.

For one thing, when living in a non-Jewish society, we often rely on non-Jewish neighbors to help us navigate difficult areas of Jewish practice, such as running hospitals on Shabbat. In a predominantly Jewish society in which many public services are run by the state, alternative solutions must be developed in order to foster Shabbat observance in the public arena. In this virtual tour of the Zomet Institute’s “Experiential Visitor Center”, students go behind the scenes to understand how the Zomet Institute’s Rabbis and Engineers solve techno-halachic problems by developing innovative and ingenious devices that enable Israeli society to maintain Shabbat observance in a modern context.

The M² Senior Educators Cohort (SEC) is a selective international training program for experiential Jewish educators. Open to educators with at least five years of experience, SEC enables participants to articulate, refine and sharpen their practice by exposing them to theories and methods that serve as the foundations of experiential Jewish education.

The study of diaspora policies in political science, international relations, and political geography has moved away from conceiving diasporas as bounded entities to conceptualizing diasporas as a process to be made. One body of literature maps different strategies employed to bond diasporas to their country of origin, while another body of literature pays specific attention to diasporic identities and the ways such identities are reproduced and constructed abroad. This article seeks to bring these two literature together by focusing on homeland tourism as a diasporization strategy, i.e. the construction, reproduction, and transmission of diasporic identity. Through the case of Taglit-Birthright – a free educational trip to Israel offered to young Jewish adults – the article identifies the specific mechanisms and micro-practices used in order to transform Israeli territory into a Jewish homeland, reproduce the narrative of dispersion, and demarcate group boundaries.
