1 Million Pounds of Shmurah Matzah: How Passover Production Continues to Rise | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Passover is around the corner, and handmade shmurah matzah is starting to pop up on supermarket shelves. Before long, it’ll be everywhere – from Costco to the White House. Demand for the traditional, round matzah has grown at a rapid rate in the last 60 years, and in 2017, according to a survey conducted by Chabad.org, more than 1 million pounds of the handmade variety will be produced in the United States alone. To meet the growing demand, matzah bakeries around the world begin baking shmurah matzah as early as October, producing batches of the tasty, smoking discs.

20 Ideas for Professional Development in the Digital Age

20 Ideas for Professional Development in the Digital Age | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

What is professional development?  It is pretty much anything that helps one develop professionally. At the heart, professional development is about growth and learning.  In the field of education, it seems like many quickly think of educational opportunities that mimic what they see in their schools. As a result, they turn professional learning and education into schooling.  The problem with that is that schooling is too limiting.  In this age, there are many other exciting and high-impact learning opportunities for teachers that extend beyond traditional notions of schooling.  When we hear the phrase “professional development,” certain practices likely come to mind, things like in-services and conferences. In the digital age, there are countless other opportunities for professional development and restricting one’s thoughts to just a few options limits our insight into what is possible for our students.  With that in mind, here is a brainstorm of 20 options available to educators today. This is far from an exhaustive list, but it is enough to start exploring the possibilities.  Feel free to suggest others in a comment to this post.

I am Co-Keynoting next fall and we've chosen as our topic the necessity of sustained, engaging ProD. How to start it and how to grow it. Our focus is a little different but this article does hit upon several of the means that we are gathering. Thank you! In the end, we are convinced that it comes down to relationships. The teachers need to respect each other professionally and care for each other personally. If you have that, you have every ingredient necessary for a successful PD program. Any of these 20 program ideas can work if you have those relationships.
Victor Ventura's curator insight, March 18, 9:46 AM
Anything goes in PD. Make it work for you in terms of time, location, in person/online, source, funding, and your preference for individual, small team, district, or strangers.
Danny Castaño's curator insight, March 21, 12:22 AM
We can found in this article 20 different ideas in order to go beyond traditional practices since we are in a digital area with new desires and expectations from students about their learning process and for that we need to grow professionally as teachers. We can highlight some of the most relvevan ones such as "The Webinar with live sessions, Video Tutorials even when is one of the most common strategies,  is really helpful to our professional development, Graduate Courses and Programs online as well to get more knowledge about topics of interest, and other such as Accountability Partners, Training Programs and so on. We need to keep in mind that teachers can't never stop learning.

Together, Legacy 613 and NCSY formed a network of six yeshiva high schools to participate in a pilot initiative to pioneer a revolutionary way of teaching tefilla to the next generation. Six schools across the Orthodox demographic spectrum (co-ed and separate, West Coast and East Coast) are participating in this pilot program: North Shore Hebrew Academy High School, the Stella K. White Fire: The Power of Jewish Learning through the Arts

White Fire: The Power of Jewish Learning through the Arts | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
This notion of multiplicity of meaning is the core inspiration of the Jewish Artists’ Laboratory of the Midwest. The lab is a network of professional Jewish artists in six cities in the Midwest – Milwaukee, Madison, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Chicago, and Cleveland – now in its sixth year. In each city, a group meets twice monthly to study a theme related to Jewish life, and to create works of art for an annual exhibit/showcase based on their study. The artists include painters, printmakers, sculptors, fabric artists, musicians, poets, playwrights, choreographers, mixed media artists, photographers, and more.

MOFET JTEC - Whole Child Growth Through Jewish Integrated Learning

MOFET JTEC - Whole Child Growth Through Jewish Integrated Learning | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

At the Jewish Enrichment Center, children involve their whole selves in Jewish learning: they dive into a Jewish text with peers, and wrestle, refine, and recreate their own personalized meaning through creative, in-depth projects which unfold over several months. The teaching modality we use is called integrated learning, in which children grapple with a complex question or idea for an extended period. As they work, children explore text and their relationship with text, wrestle with peers’ varied responses and our tradition, while practicing essential life skills, such as cooperation, engagement with diverse perspectives, and resilience. The projects are not supplemental to the learning, but the projects are the path through which children learn. This article will describe our third through fifth children’s exploration of the driving question, “What is berakhah?,” with insight into how the project process builds children’s Jewish knowledge as well as social-emotional skills.

Introducing the Kenissa Network: A 21st Century Pathway into Jewish Life

Introducing the Kenissa Network: A 21st Century Pathway into Jewish Life | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Kenissa is a name that emerged from a small working group of participants. Even though a lot of (so-called) marketing gurus recommend against using Hebrew words to name an organization or project, the desire to anchor the work in lashon kodesh, “the holy language of our people,” was strong among the leaders we are pulling together. In addition, the word kenissa means “entrance-way.” It is the perfect word to describe the network of Jewish communities of meaning that we are building because, for so many, these organizations and communities open the door to many Jews who are not attracted by more mainstream Jewish organizations. Quite often, engaging with these Jewish communities of meaning represents the first exposure they are having to Jewish life as adults.

The Mandel Teacher Educator Institute (MTEI) is a program that strengthens the Jewish community by developing educational leaders – “teachers of teachers” – who are spearheading powerful and innovative professional development experiences for their institutions and communities. We believe that ongoing, substantive professional development for educational leaders and teachers is central to revitalizing Jewish education. MTEI’s intensive two-year program that consists of six, 4-day seminars with assignments in the field between meetings is a building block toward this goal.
