MOFET JTEC - Hebrew, the Living Breath of Jewish Existence: The Teaching and Learning of Biblical and Modern Hebrew

MOFET JTEC - Hebrew, the Living Breath of Jewish Existence: The Teaching and Learning of Biblical and Modern Hebrew | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

I contend that the physical separation between the Jewish Studies and the Hebrew departments in Jewish day schools does a disservice to both by shutting the door to crucial teaching and learning opportunities of Hebrew. I recommend that Jewish day schools should be working towards breaking down these ‘barriers’. In the present research, I address this issue from the perspective of my own interest, namely Hebrew pedagogy.

MOFET JTEC - Yeshiva Day Schools: Give Parents a Choice

MOFET JTEC - Yeshiva Day Schools: Give Parents a Choice | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

is piece, the follow up to my recent discussion of the financial and non-financial costs of yeshiva day schools, proposes what I respectfully submit is a relatively simple and intuitive solution to this fundamental flaw in the yeshiva day school model. Put in place, it would radically alleviate yeshiva day school costs without compromising our children’s Jewish education, and potentially make that education more effective and lasting.

Our tradition understands well that from a transmission perspective, there is no place like home. MOFET JTEC - Camp Amichai and Learning Beyond the Classroom…

MOFET JTEC - Camp Amichai and Learning Beyond the Classroom… | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

As a teacher, this experience has made me think about the education that takes place outside of the classroom, and how important it is to make sure our kids are in the best environments. Math and science are easy, as they can be taught from a book. Behaviors and our general outlooks on life though, are at least in part, dependent on the environments in which we place our children. As parents and as educators we need to remember this. My son’s summer experience proved that locations and even certain groups can have a profound effect on a person’s development. We are grateful to Camp Amichai that the effects have been so positive.

MOFET JTEC - The Endangered Next Generation of Israeli American Jews

MOFET JTEC - The Endangered Next Generation of Israeli American Jews | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

We can make a big difference in retaining these Jews and their children as part of the Jewish people and Jewish religion. It is, in many ways, much easier than engaging a secular American Jew in that Israelis all have much stronger Jewish identities and memories. If we do not wake up quickly and put resources toward this challenge, equipping synagogues across the country to engage Israelis and to understand their unique culture and needs it will soon be too late for the next generation.

MOFET JTEC - Instagram Your Jewish Identity | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

When I asked my class to tell me about their Jewish Identity on day one, I got the answers you would expect. "I'm Jewish because my parents are Jewish," "I don't have any feelings about it. I'm just Jewish," and the dreaded, "I don't know what to say about it." That first day we talked about how it's okay not to know. I told them I wasn't looking for the "right answer." I let them know we would be spending 7 weeks asking the question and that all of our answers would be different. I was more interested in the process than I was in the product and my students were intrigued by that.

MOFET JTEC - Approaches to Curriculum: The Journey from Preservice Training to Novice Teacher | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

In this longitudinal study, carried out over a period of 6 years, the curriculum approach of student-teachers in the fields of Jewish Studies (Bible Studies and Jewish Philosophy) was examined, from their 1st year of studies until their 6th year when they took their places as full-fledged teachers in schools. This article focuses on the student-teachers’ approaches to curriculum and the differences in their attitudes toward two formal study programs, that differ in character and essence. The major argument in this article is that the character and essence of a formal syllabus has great influence on curriculum approaches of students preparing to become teachers, and their place in developing their own teaching program.
