From Crisis to an Opportunity to Thrive: Announcing the Fellowship in Educating for Applied Jewish Wisdom

From Crisis to an Opportunity to Thrive: Announcing the Fellowship in Educating for Applied Jewish Wisdom | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
To answer these questions and advance this still fledgling vision of Jewish education, the Leadership Commons of The Davidson School at JTS, with the support of the Lippman Kanfer Foundation for Living Torah, is launching the Fellowship in Educating for Applied Jewish Wisdom. We know there are many scholar-practitioners in the field today piloting innovative examples of educating for thriving that focuses on the ways in which Jewish wisdom can be applied to living ethical lives. The fellowship will bring together a select group of these leading practitioners from across settings to co-create exemplary educational models and cultivate their role as thought-leaders for the field of Jewish education.

This yearlong fellowship will convene with a multi-day retreat in mid-January 2018, followed by a 2018 summer retreat and a continental conference during the winter of 2018-19. During the retreats and in between, fellows will learn with esteemed faculty, participate in hevruta study with one another, engage in action research and documentation of their own work on educating for practical Jewish wisdom, and share their knowledge and insights through in person teaching and publishing. An honorarium and all travel expenses will be provided to the Fellows.

Sefer Yesira, the Story of a Text in Search of Commentary

Sefer Yesira, the Story of a Text in Search of Commentary | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
The minuscule composition known as Sefer Yesira (SY), so tiny some thought it to be meant as an amulet, is a challenging text, begging for commentary. Though the Hebrew text is very short (about 1,000 words), it has played an important role in Jewish thought, and in more recent times, in the academic study of Jewish thought. The “book” itself contains very little prose; it consists mostly of catalogs of the components of the cosmos, in groups of two (pairs of opposites), three, and seven, and their sums—10, 12, 22, and 32. The cataloged components are those making up the physical universe, the human body, and time. The 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet are very significant as well and are matched to the other components of the universe. The original intent of the author or authors is not known.

Valuing Jewish Educators by Singing Shalom Aleichem

Valuing Jewish Educators by Singing Shalom Aleichem | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
In order to prevent this burnout, it is critical for organizations to show educators that they are appreciated for their knowledge, passion and commitment. What follows is not a conversation about compensation, which has been discussed extensively here and in other related publications, but rather some suggestions for non-monetary actions that organizations can take to make their educators feel respected and valued.

Let’s look at the liturgical poem, Shalom Aleichem as a framework for respect and value. There are 4 stanzas to the poem traditionally sung on Friday nights at the start of the Shabbat meal. Each of these stanzas represents an essential method for showing educators that they are truly valued.

How to Set Up Two-Factor Authentication on All Your Social Accounts

How to Set Up Two-Factor Authentication on All Your Social Accounts | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
To add an extra layer of protection, you should consider using two-factor authentication. Two-factor authentication (also known as 2FA or two-step verification) is a security method that uses two different ways to verify your identity. Instead of only entering a password to log in, you’ll be asked to enter a code which is sent via text message to your phone or generated via an app. This verification helps make sure that only you can access your account.

We’ve previously pointed out several internet services where you should enable 2FA. Today, let’s see which social media platforms support it and how you can enable them.

The Individuality of being Connected to Israel

The Individuality of being Connected to Israel | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
I was struck with these crucial ideas when reading the latest in the offerings of suggestions for how best to impart effective Israel Education. Alex Sinclair in his thoughtful piece “Toward an Israel Education of Direction, not Connection” suggests that we need to focus less on “Connecting” people to Israel and more on directing them on responding. I could not disagree more! Our approaches and pedagogies for Israel education must be firmly rooted within the methodologies employed for Jewish education. More specifically they must be in congruence with how we understand ourselves as Jews. We as a People are connected! This connection does not and cannot imply that we lose our ability to disagree or critique, on the contrary it is this very connection that enables frank and candid conversations. That is the nature of a relationship. Conceding this connection will only further encourage the ineffectual us and them discourse.

Their program – which divided its time between Warsaw and Krakow along with a day-trip to Auschwitz and another to the birthplace of Pope John Paul II – was based on past itineraries used by POLAND/POLIN Study Tours and previous Taube Jewish Heritage tours created for Hillels such as those at Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, and Michigan.

Therefore, for the future of Modern Orthodoxy, I implore with all my passion and strength that the G-d fearing members of our communities take a stand and push for change in the current situation so that the future generations will be zocheh from an early age to appreciate Hashem and welcome His laws with a genuine affirmation that they were made out of love and caring for us, His children.

5 key takeaways, some surprising, from new survey of US Modern Orthodox Jews

5 key takeaways, some surprising, from new survey of US Modern Orthodox Jews | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
They make almost three times the median US household income.

Modern Orthodox Jews are affluent. The study found that the group had a median household income of $158,000, nearly triple the American median of $59,000 in 2016. The highest earning were the Open Orthodox at $185,000.

A large portion of the income is dedicated to day school tuition, which in some places can top $40,000 per child per year. The survey found that 83 percent of Modern Orthodox parents send their kids to Orthodox day school; 90 percent

The Delusion Of Day School Affordability

The Delusion Of Day School Affordability | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
In pursuit of wisdom and inspiration, my recent reading has included dozens of articles, research papers and surveys, diligently written by Jewish educators, scholars and researchers. Most proffer three assertions: the extraordinary benefits of Jewish education are proven; enrollment at Jewish schools cumulatively continues to decline; and more families would consider Jewish education for their children if only it was affordable.
What is glaringly and repeatedly omitted by most of these writers is any attempt at providing solutions aligned with reality to the difficulties faced by Jewish educational institutions. Writers as well as donors often claim that Jewish schools must be run like businesses, self-sufficient and sustainable. Perhaps some schools in major metropolitan areas with large Jewish populations, affluent families and philanthropists can achieve self-sufficiency. But the majority of Jewish schools around the globe cannot. To think otherwise is delusional.

Israel Education for Knowledge, Connection and Stance

Israel Education for Knowledge, Connection and Stance | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
When students know about Israel and connect to Israel, they will be able to take stances (provisional though they may be). That is, they will be able to articulate a vision for the future of Israel and take action to bring their vision about. Some of our students may adopt the center-left stances that Sinclair advocates, but others will move in different directions equally grounded in knowledge and connection.

We must teach our students to challenge sacred cows and ask hard questions, but if we don’t help our students form deep connections to Israel, they may not feel that the “hard questions” are even worth asking

Who are the “People,” which “Book” are we referring to, and what is the relationship between the two?

We invite you to join us and examine this question with scholars and experts. Conference participants will also explore ways to share the answers with diverse learners and families who have different backgrounds and familiarity with Jewish texts, stories, traditions and the Hebrew language.

Reflecting on Israel during the High Holidays – Jeducation World

Reflecting on Israel during the High Holidays – Jeducation World | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
The Jewish Education Project has taken an inward look as well. We’ve concluded that one step forward is embracing the belief that learning about Israel, with all its complexities, is essential for all Jews.

We are proud and excited to share that we will be giving Israel a more prominent spot in all areas of our work. In the spirit of our current holiday preparation, I propose a hybrid exercise for our colleagues in the field, an Israel Education Heshbon HaNefesh. I offer a few suggestions to face the challenge of improving our practices this coming year.
