Israel Education: Where are We Going and How are We Getting There?

Israel Education: Where are We Going and How are We Getting There? | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Such a framework would go some ways toward creating a “common language” in educating Jewish day school students about Israel – one of the most divisive issues within American Jewry. Additionally, it would also assist in bridging the current gaps, not only between different streams of American Jewry, but also between Israeli and American educators on the topic of Israel. The simple fact that the standards and benchmarks would be based on cognitive as well as behavioral and affective goals would in itself create a field of activity broad enough to allow all schools, curriculums, and divergent educational streams to find the common ground for collaboration and joint endeavors, thereby reinforcing the value of “klal Israel.”

For details about the conference please visit: https://www.brandeis.edu/israelcenter/resources/educators2016.html. We welcome teams of 2-4 educators, heads of departments, administrators and board members to register and participate in this conversation.

Dear Social Justice Warriors: Your Religion Is Progressivism, Not Judaism

Dear Social Justice Warriors: Your Religion Is Progressivism, Not Judaism | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

all of us who remain should take three vows: to engage with Judaism on its terms, not our own; to refrain from arguing that this engagement somehow gives us the authority to make claims on anything but the faith itself; and to have the intellectual and moral decency to realize that while political and theological questions sometimes converge, they are never, at their essence, the same questions. As Jews, there’s really nothing else we ought to do.

Evaluating Websites as Information Sources

Evaluating Websites as Information Sources | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Studies suggest that many U.S. students are too trusting of information found on the internet and rarely evaluate the credibility of a website’s information. For example, a survey found that only 4 percent of middle school students reported checking the accuracy of information found on the web at school, and even fewer did so at home (New Literacies Research Team & Internet Reading Research Group, 2006).

In His Image –An Interview with Rabbi Yuval Cherlow

In His Image –An Interview with Rabbi Yuval Cherlow | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it
Rabbi Yuval Cherlow (Hebrew wiki) thinks there is a need for developing greater sensitivity to the new social and economic issues not legislated by halakhah by turning to ethical literature (mussar) and non-legal rabbinic literature (aggadah). Under these new conditions, “social sensitivities become more significant… If we can only build on this sensitivity, we can create a more just world.”…

MOFET JTEC - ‘I Want Them to Learn about Israel and the Holidays’: Jewish Israeli Mothers in Early-Twenty-First-Century Britain | Jewish Education Around the World | Scoop.it

This article explores this assumption by focusing on the experiences of mothering of a group of Israeli emigrants in Britain. Based on twelve oral history interviews, it considers the issues of child socialisation and the mothers’ own social life. It traces how the women created a social network within which to mother and how they tried to ensure their children preserved a Jewish Israeli identity. The article also seeks to question how parenting abroad led the interviewees to embrace cultural and religious traditions in new ways.
