MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) — Armed with an iPad and references to pop culture, one local Rabbi will host a Sunday night service celebrating Rosh Hashanah by straying a little from tradition. Presided over by Rabbi Amy Morrison of Temple Beth Shalom, the Jewish High Holiday service will include traditional touches, but will also allow congregants to text their transgressions anonymously to a 5-foot screen located behind Rabbi Morrison. Such texting deviates from Jewish tradition, in which smartphones are looked down upon by the elder Jewish population. The unique service, held at the Jewish Museum of Florida in Miami Beach, is geared towards 20- and 30-somethings who are unlikely to attend a formal service at a synagogue... Abramowitz sees solar energy as the key to lowering Israel’s high energy costs, cutting pollution and fulfilling David Ben-Gurion's vision of making Israel’s desert bloom..."

“As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality,” the Republican presidential candidate told about 40 wealthy donors who ate breakfast at the luxurious King David Hotel. Romney said the economic history of the world has shown that “culture makes all the difference.” “And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things,” Romney said, citing an innovative business climate, the Jewish history of thriving in difficult circumstances and the “hand of providence.” He said similar disparity exists between neighboring countries, like Mexico and the United States.

A short clip of an eight-day old baby “driving” to his brit milah (circumcision) in a remote-controlled car, posted in early June on YouTube, has cleared the 100,000 mark and is still racing ahead. Accompanied by drummers, camera crews in tow, with adoring family and fans clapping along the route, the baby was filmed sleeping at the wheel in an Israeli shopping mall.
There are many reasons to mourn on Tisha B’Av. Historically, our holy Temples in Jerusalem were destroyed. As a result we lost the great spiritual connection present in those Temples.
Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad gloated publicly on Thursday over the deaths of Israelis in a terror bombing in Bulgaria, and hinted that Iran was responsible for the attack. Speaking hours after Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had publicly blamed the bombing Wednesday at Bulgaria’s Burgas airport on “Hezbollah, directed by Iran,” Ahmadinejad described the attack as “a response” to Israeli “blows against Iran.” “The bitter enemies of the Iranian people and the Islamic Revolution have recruited most of their forces in order to harm us,” he said in a speech reported by Israel’s Channel 2 TV. “They have indeed succeeded in inflicting blows upon us more than once, but have been rewarded with a far stronger response.” He added: “The enemy believes it can achieve its aims in a long, persistent struggle against the Iranian people, but in the end it will not. We are working to ensure that.

Via New York Post: TRIPOLI, Libya — Tuesday night's deadly assault that killed the American ambassador to Libya and three other Americans was planned by attackers who used protests as a diversion, sources told CNN today. Earlier reports said the Americans were killed when a mob of protesters and gunmen overwhelmed the US Consulate in Benghazi, setting fire to it in outrage over a film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad. Libya's new president apologized Wednesday for the attack, which underlined the lawlessness plaguing a region trying to recover from months of upheaval. Ambassador Chris Stevens, 52, died as he and a group of embassy employees went to the consulate to try to evacuate staff as a crowd of hundreds attacked the consulate Tuesday evening, many of them firing machine-guns and rocket-propelled grenades. By the end of the assault, much of the building was burned out and trashed. Stevens was the first US ambassador to be killed in the line of duty since 1979. A Libyan doctor who treated Stevens said he died of severe asphyxiation, apparently from smoke. In a sign of the chaos of during the attack, Stevens was brought alone by Libyans to the Benghazi Medical Center with no other Americans, and no one at the facility knew who he was, the doctor, Ziad Abu Zeid, told The Associated Press... How could Romney praise Israel's culture over the Palestinians'? Is he not aware of Palestinian poetry, music and art? Let's take a closer look at Palestinian culture, shall we? Poetry is the perfect place to start. The following verse was recited by a young girl on PA TV this spring: "... The occupier stole my land and my grandfathers' land ... Where is your sword, Khaled (Arab warrior)? Where is your courage, Saladin (Muslim conqueror)? But no one answered me. Where is my weapon? I found it — a stone. I took it and threw it at the enemies of destiny. I taught the world that the Muslim in the name of Allah cannot be defeated ... They challenge us with the White House, and we challenge them with the [Islamic] awakening and the Kaaba [in Mecca]. They aren't stronger than Khosrau and Caesar (rulers of Persian and Byzantine Empires). They [Christians and Jews] are inferior and smaller, more cowardly and despised. They are remnants of the [Christian] crusaders and Khaibar (i.e., Jewish village destroyed by Muslims in 629) ... Oh Muslims of the world: Awaken, you have slept too long. Your fathers and your sons are being massacred, your Al-Aqsa [mosque] is defiled and destroyed."
That beautiful unity, that amazing “achdut” and that wonderful feeling of being one family was shattered with the announcement – here in Israel – of the Siyum Ha’Shas. Monday – the 11th of Menachem Av (July 30th) will be – and this is a direct quote: Siyum Ha’Shas for Sefaradim in Teddy Stadium, Jerusalem. Tuesday – the 12th of Menachem Av (July 31st) will be Siyum Ha’Shas for Haredim in a special complex being built for this occasion in Maalot Dafna, Jerusalem. Thursday – the 14th of Menachem Av (August 2nd) will be Siyum Ha’Shas for Religious Zionists in Binyanei Ha’Uma, Jerusalem. There it goes, or as a famous sports announcer used to say when a player hit a home-run: “Kiss it good-bye”. For 7+ years there was one nation and one people, but for the conclusion of this Kiddush Hashem there are three nations and three people. Knitted Kippa? Your place is on Thursday. Black hat? Your siyum is on Tuesday. Sefardi? Better hurry, you guys go first!

I make people laugh. For a living, even. Early yesterday afternoon, I wrote the following status on Facebook: "Why is there security at Mini Israel? Are they worried about a mini-pigua?" Twenty-two “likes” later, life was good. Until the horrific news broke about the Bulgaria attack. My friend Liza texted me: “I liked your pigua [Hebrew for "terror attack"] update earlier, but there was just a pigua against Israeli tourists in Bulgaria with at least five dead. You might want to take the post down.” That is, in case someone thought I had written it after the attack, or simply found it distasteful considering the context. This extremely unlucky coincidence is emblematic of what it’s like to try to maintain a sense of humor in a country where nightmares are always lurking somewhere around the corner.
